Residents interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s popular spring fitness programs, which will be returning this April, according to Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone. The spring fitness classes are for individuals 18 years of age or older and will be held at the Hicksville Athletic Center. These fitness programs provide a terrific form of aerobic exercise that builds strength as well as increases general ﬂexibility. Courses available include Zumba, yoga and cardio kickboxing. Registration for the Spring Fitness programs will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center (167 Broadway, Hicksville) from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22nd and Thursday, March 24th, and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 26th. Following these dates, registration will continue at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, based on availability. Each program is 10 to 12 weeks in

length with a fee of $60 for residents and $70 for nonresidents. Zumba classes will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Mondays (starting Monday, April 4th), and 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. on Wednesdays (starting Wednesday, April 6th). The yoga classes will be held on Mondays from 10 to 11 a.m. (starting April 4th), Tuesdays from 8 to 9 p.m. (starting April 5th) and Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m. (starting April 9th).The cardio kickboxing classes will be held on Mondays from 8 to 9 p.m. beginning on April 4th. These healthy fitness programs are very popular among participants because they can enjoy these exercises while meeting new people who also enjoy staying in shape. It is always recommended that participants check with a physician before participating in any physical fitness program. An exciting matchup of premier Division III college lacrosse teams will take place in the Town of Oyster Bay. The Town will host the 2016 Supervisor’s Lacrosse Challenge on Saturday, March 12th, at John J. Burns Park, located on Merrick Road in Massapequa. The event features a game between the NCAA men’s lacrosse forces from Union College and Springfield College. It will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the teams playing for the right to claim the Supervisor’s Trophy. Lacrosse fans of all ages are sure to enjoy this special event featuring a matchup of two highly respected collegiate lacrosse programs. It is an opportunity for local residents to see some of the finest young talent in the sport. The Union College men’s

lacrosse team is led by Head Coach Paul Wehrum, who is a member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame (Class of 1999). He owns a career mark of 98-49 (.667) in nine seasons at Union. He owns the best winning percentage in program history and ranks second in career wins. According to a pre-season poll by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, Union College currently ranks 12th in Nation in Division III. Last year, the Dutchmen finished with a 14-5 record and ranked 15th. They were runnersup in the Liberty League tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Springfield College Men’s Lacrosse Program, under the direction of head coach Keith Bugbee, has won 8 straight NCAA

Championship Berths from 2008 to 2015. Bugbee will enter his 33rd season as the team’s coach and his record stands at an impressive 353-169 (.676 winning percentage). They are routinely considered among the finest teams in the country. Springfield College’s athletic teams are known as the “Pride” and are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and play in the competitive New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference. In addition to the outstanding collegiate game, young players will be treated to a Town of Oyster Bay Free Youth Clinic at 11:00 a.m. Kevin Sheehan, a nationally recognized coach will lead the clinic. Sheehan is the 2011 Recipient of U.S. Lacrosse Award for

Most Creative Youth Coach, coached Adelphi University to three lacrosse national championships and two Empire State Long Island Girls Championship Teams. He also coached two Bronze Medal Australian World Teams and has authored numerous articles on youth coaching. Long Ago & Far Away By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time continues to march on, and those moments we so casually took for granted along the way become nothing more than a distant memory, relegated to the nostalgia pile, to be savored in the imagination only. The difference, though, is that these ﬂashbacks are increasingly from not so long ago, mere years, rather than decades… yet they seem a lifetime away, just out of reach. It’s the little things, too, the laughs shared, the stories told, the impromptu gatherings, the gifts exchanged, the memories made. Whether with family members, friends, co-workers, even the occasional stranger, every moment is part of something

larger, a curve in the path – your path – of life. Every decision made, or not made; each chance encounter or outlined goal – all leads to the point we are currently at, for better or worse. How amazing to be able to foresee the consequences of our actions; but then, our choices would be far simpler, wouldn’t they? Gone would be the mystery, the spontaneity, the happy accidents that tend to occur along the way when you simply close your eyes and just let life take you by the hand. There are those who believe in destiny; and there are those who refuse to think we don’t have as much input in our affairs as any otherworldly force. Which is right? Who’s to say. The only indisputable fact is that everything does

happen for a reason. People come into our lives, or go, as the case may be; and we are better for it. Every chance meeting is a lesson in disguise, to be determined at a later date. In the meantime, we go on, as does time. Our world grows smaller as circumstances change our daily dynamics, and we are forced to adjust, whether we care to or not. The memories fade, and their significance wanes in the face of more urgent, pressing matters. But we should never forget… the people, the places, the roads taken – all have led to here and now. And one day, not so very far away, this, too, will be but a snapshot in the giant album of life. We had best preserve it from now.

Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” this spring by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park. The Ice Skating Center offers skating classes for residents all throughout the year. This season is an ideal time for newcomers to learn how to ice skate or for veteran skaters to strengthen their abilities. Resident Registration Spring is almost here and residents are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Summer Adult Co-Ed Badminton and Adult CoEd Volleyball Programs. The programs are open to players who are 18 and older and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The volleyball program starts on Tuesday, April 5th and will be conducted on Mondays and Tuesdays

from 9 to 10:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. The badminton program starts on Thursday, April 7th, and will be held on Thursdays and Sundays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. and Fridays from 9 to 10:30 p.m. The programs, which are 12 weeks in duration, are $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents. Proof of residency is required for the discount.

The Adult Co-Ed Badminton Program and the Adult Volleyball Program provide an incredibly healthy and competitive atmosphere for residents. Registration is now underway for the Town of Oyster Bay’s spring night softball men’s league hosted by the Town’s Department of Parks. According to Councilman Pinto, the Town of Oyster Bay’s men’s softball league is widely respected and offers players the thrill of competition and a great form of exercise. Not only is the league very well organized, but players will get to play on fields that many consider to be among the finest in the country. These night-time softball games offer friendly competition and a great recreational and social outlet for all

participants. The Men’s softball league generally plays Monday through Thursday, with games starting between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m., in addition to the occasional Saturday game. Please be aware that game times and locations will vary throughout the season. Only teams with completed registration requirements will be given consideration. Any team looking to register must also submit insurance certificates (MAIL-IN ONLY) as proof of insurance, along with an endorsement of the policy. All fees and proof of insurance are due no later

Service Awards Massapequa High School seniors John Latini and Evan Ryan were recognized for their community service by the 2016 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program. The program grants awards on behalf of President Barack Obama to those who have volunteered a significant amount of time to better their communities. Both winners received an awards certificate and a letter from the President. John, an award winner three years in a row, won the President’s Volunteer Service Award for logging in nearly 200 hours of community service this year, mainly for two causes. A devoted volunteer for Canine Companions for Independence, a non-profit organization which works to train dogs for people with disabilities, John helped organize a Dog Fest to raise awareness of service and guide dogs for the organization. An Eagle Scout, John said, “I put together volunteers from my Boy Scout Troop to help coordinate the logistics, such as the set up and break down of the event.” John also ran a highly successful donation drive for his church, Our Lady of Grace in Babylon, by collecting more

than 1,500 pounds of food, school supplies and toiletries. Driving its success, John canvased communities for two weeks, handing out ﬂiers and bags for residents and business owners to fill, then returned to collect and deliver them to his church for distribution. The effort

over their fear of the water and learn how to swim and has also helped train swimmers for the Special Olympics. After graduation, he plans to study engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology. Evan received the Local Honoree Award for his efforts to collect food for the New Life Lutheran Social Services Center in Uniondale, which is affiliated with St. David’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Massapequa. Evan collected about 60 pounds of food by spreading the word on Facebook and through family and friends. Evan will soon start his Eagle Scout project, which involves beautifying the front of his church with new landscaping. In addition to his volunteer efforts, Evan is a member of the Mock Trial team, interns for Senator Charles Schumer’s office and sings with the A Cappella group, Crooners. He plans to study political science in college and attend law school. “We applaud these students for contributing hundreds of selﬂess hours to earned him his Boys Scout Eagle Award. help those in need in their community,” said Principal Dr. John has been a member of the varsity swimming and Barbara Williams. “Their efforts are highly commendable diving team since eighth grade and helps children get and are shining examples for their peers to emulate.”
