The Long Island Real Estate Group recently gave a $25,000 donation to Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD) to allow for a dental suite to be named for LIREG in The Charles Evans Health Services Center. Dentistry is a challenge

for many individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. ACLD’s Health Services utilizes a desensitization program to help individuals reduce anxiety about going to the dentist. The program allows for this population to improve their dental health, which is essential to their overall well-being.

Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program

ACLD is grateful for the generous support by LIREG for this important aspect of the clinic. ACLD’s director of health services Mark Crean and director of development and community relations Julie McKenna are pictured with members of LIREG.

Kohl’s will honor more than 2,300 young volunteers with nearly $400,000 in scholarships and prizes; top winners will receive $10,000 each. Only two weeks remain to nominate young volunteers for the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program. Kids ages six to 18 who have made a positive impact on their communities can be awarded scholarships and prizes, ranging from $50 Kohl’s gift cards to $10,000 scholarships. and Joseph Heimbauer of Massapequa went undefeated to finish as the Gold Bracket Tournament Champions. The team defeated the New York City Juniors National team in two straight sets in the championship game. The U12-Elite were the only team to finish in first place from the GEVA regional volleyball authority, which includes the NY and NJ region. They played so well that the team was selected to be included in a documentary of The Side-Out Foundation, which raises funding for breast cancer awareness. Two of the Hurricanes players out of the entire athletic pool of hundreds of players within their age bracket earned prestigious

honors. Gabriella Heimbauer earned MVP and Emily Van O’Linda earned Best Digger. Passion for volleyball is nothing new for the Heimbauer’s of Massapequa. Adriana Heimbauer who plays volleyball on The Island Volleyball Academy’s U14 team won 3rd place overall in the Gold Bracket. This special team has won the Gold Bracket Championship for the past two years. They remain undefeated within their age bracket in regional play and continue to be the team to beat. The Long Island Hurricanes Girls Volleyball Team based out of Seaford, NY sent their U12-Elite team to the Annual Capitol Hill Classic Volleyball tournament on Presidents’ Day Weekend in Washington D.C. at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. This is the largest girls volleyball tournament on the East Coast of the USA. Recently, a bunch of inquisitive Bear Cub Scouts from Pack 696 had a special field trip to the Nassau County 7th Precinct Police Station in Seaford. Thanks to Officer Kurt Faraczek, of the Problem Oriented Policing (P.O.P.) unit, learning and fun came together. The scouts were introduced to a variety of law enforcement areas two they could learn

how a police department works, the different field occupations, and some very important ways that kids can keep themselves safe (i.e., how to use 911 and the concept of stranger danger). Some activities included touring the station and jail cells, taking and examining different types of fingerprints, and learning about the helpful equipment of an officer.

The trip was complete with important Child ID Kits to take home, and the opportunity to explore a patrol car - lights & sirens and all! This enriching program is something the precinct has been doing for many years and is an invaluable service to the community. A big thank you to the 7th Precinct!

Road To Nationals The journey to Nationals started at a National Cheerleader Association camp this past summer where the Massapequa Varsity team earned a bid to compete at their High School National Competition. After competing locally at five Long Island

Cheerleading Coaches’ Association competitions and placing in the top three on several occasions, they earned a spot in the Long Island Championships held at Suffolk Community College on February 2nd. Massapequa placed first among Nassau teams and second on Long Island in

the Small Varsity division! The team concluded their season this past weekend at NCA’s Open High School Nationals, where they earned the title of National Champions in the Medium Intermediate Varsity division.

There seems to be an obsession lately, especially on social networking sites, with “flashbacks” and “throwbacks” to times that, in hindsight, were happier and simpler. These moments are shared in the form of photos, videos, reminiscences of milestones and markers, all subtle indications that, for whatever reason, we are not overly happy in the now. But what of the present day? Some would contend that, to borrow from Billy Joel, this is the time to

remember (cause it will not last forever…la, la, la). And they would be correct. Difficult as it may be to step back and appreciate our current situation, whatever it may be, we may find that it was quite ideal in hindsight. No one knows what the next year, or month, or week, or even day, will bring. And there’s really not much sense dwelling on this vast unknown, as much of it is beyond our control. The important things, like family and friends and health and happiness… unfortunately, we can only do so much to maintain our little bubble

of complacency before some outside force pops it. They say you should find the positive in everything, make the most of adverse situations, and do at least one thing each day for you… but how many of us do? No, we would rather move robotically through life, obsessing over each obstacle, letting the slightest bump in the road throw us completely off course. One day, today will be the flashback we choose to highlight on some virtual “wall.” Let’s try enjoying it in real time.

Nurse Maureen had the scouts simulate various emergency situations and taught the boys how to offer help in a calm, organized, safe manner. They covered the basics of a victim choking, a hiker breaking a leg in the woods, general water safety, insect bite treatment and shock. They were also introduced to the core strategies of CPR. Accepting Applications Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, together with Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc. co-Founders Robert A.J. Eslick and Philip M. Eslick, announce their co-sponsored Kids of Distinction community service based Scholarship Program for 2014. “The Kids of Distinction Scholarship Program was initiated in an effort to recognize outstanding young people who have been active in exceptional endeavors in their community,” Supervisor Venditto said. At last year’s ceremony, eight exceptional Town of Oyster Bay youngsters were honored for their commitment to

their communities. In celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the ‘Kids of Distinction’ program the Kids Helping Kids Scholarship Committee will award ten (10) - $2000 scholarships this year. “The concept of the program is to recognize kids for taking part in activities done on their own initiative,” Philip said. “Last year’s group of winners certainly fit the bill, many going above and beyond the call of duty to help others in their community.” The ‘Kids of Distinction’ program focuses on activities participated in outside of school. These activities should have, in some way, benefited the

community. “For nine years, we have recognized a diverse group of students who really demonstrated caring and compassion to those around them,” Supervisor Venditto said. Robert added, “We are confident that this year’s scholarship winners will be equally compassionate and worthy of this honor. To date Kids Helping Kids has distributed $48,500 in academic scholarships to help these students fund their college education and in these tough economic times every dollar helps.” Nominees will be placed in two categories, those currently in fifth through eighth grade and those in grades nine through

12. The age groups were established so nominees can be evaluated fairly against their peers. Five winners will be selected in each category by a committee organized by Kids Helping Kids. “There are so many wonderful young people living in the Town of Oyster Bay who not only demonstrate academic or extracurricular skills, but also do a little something extra to help make the world a better place,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We felt it was important to recognize our young residents who involve themselves in voluntary community, charity or civic activities on their own individual initiative.”
