ECO-TEST - After learning about the 247 “superfund” cleanup sites contaminated with hazardous chemicals across Long Island, students in the Doshi STEM Program at Nassau BOCES decided to take action. The young scientists conducted testing for heavy metal contaminants in our local ecosystem including lead, arsenic and mercury. Students went out in the field to take coastal samples from Caumsett State Park, to compare with samples from a superfund site 10 miles away in Glen Cove. They prepared and tested the samples at Brookhaven National Laboratory, conducing x-ray fluorescence tests using the lab’s state-of-the-art Synchrotron Light Source. To present their findings, the students created scientific posters.

The Town of Oyster Bay’s Golf Course will soon be ready for another season of play. “Depending upon the weather, our outstanding facility is expected to be ready for play by March 18th,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Golf membership registration will start on Wednesday, February 26th at the golf course and there will be no fee increases for the 2014 season.” With the Town holding the line on fees, Councilman Macagnone said patrons will be treated to an outstanding experience and value. “Our members are all aware that rates at surrounding golf courses have been steadily increasing, while rates at the Town’s course will remain the same,” Councilman Macagnone said. “With its challenging, yet very playable holes and its pastoral setting on the grounds of a former estate, the Town of Oyster Bay’s beautiful, championship golf course in Woodbury ranks among the most popular municipal courses on Long Island.” By registering, seasonal members will have the opportunity to enjoy all of the amenities that the Town of Oyster Bay’s renowned 18-hole par 70 championship golf course has to offer. The data from each source is kept separately, not interacting with each other, thus limiting the ability for educators and policy makers to see trends and make informed decisions. Nassau BOCES staff will be able to take all of the individual streams of data they have collected and make them work together. This information will impact

instruction, student success and help school districts decide where to invest time and other resources. “The teacher will always be in the driver’s seat; the data will be the GPS at his or her side,” Rogers explained. Unlike other state data efforts, Nassau BOCES is always in control of the data, keeping it secure and maintaining student privacy. It is not made available to third parties. Participating in the Strategic Data Project will provide Nassau BOCES staff members the opportunity to work alongside a national network of skilled analysts that are focused solely on improving student achievement in public schools. CEPR partners with school districts, non-profits and state education agencies to

transform research methods and data analysis to alter the way strategic management and policy decisions are made. “Student achievement data are vital for evaluating policies and programs, yet they are underutilized in every school district and state agency in America,” said Tom Kane, Faculty Director of CEPR and professor of education and economics at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. “With this program, we’re providing system leaders with the analytic talent they need to use their own data to learn what’s working and what’s not.” Be Happy Pleasure is Nature’s test, her sign of approval. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends. Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly

Members of Massapequa High School’s Key Club brightened up the lives of less fortunate children by donating more than 200 toys through the Long Island Head Start in Amityville. Long Island Head Start is a non-profit organization that helps families “break the cycle of poverty” by providing comprehensive child development services. The

Massapequa High School Key Club, a community service organization under Kiwanis International, works with Head Start every year to organize the trip and annual toy drive. “It’s a great opportunity for Massapequa High School to come and give presents to children, and the children love the presents,” a Head Start teacher said. Students and club

advisor Michael Draper delivered the toys in person and also spent four hours singing and playing games with the children. “It’s amazing to see the kids here get so excited over our gifts,” said Key Club President Ryan Schulte, a senior at Massapequa High School. “And the Key Clubbers are having just as much fun. It’s a beautiful experience for all.”

The admission/donation for the event will be $10 for adults for the day or $15 for the weekend. Don’t be surprised to see some of these players one day competing in the National Hockey League.” Steve Rupp, President of the Nassau County High School Hockey League, said he was looking forward to the upcoming tournament. “It’s great for the game,” Rupp said. “Many areas from throughout New York State, including Long Island, are proud of their local hockey programs and this tournament gives teams from across New York the excitement of competing for the state crown. Two years ago, Massapequa High School won this tournament. Overwhelmed by the students’ gesture, she visited Gillam’s class in uniform to thank the students personally just days after she made a surprise visit home. “I cried when I received the package,” Pvt. DiGregorio said. “I remember writing my letter and how I included a picture of an American flag. This project shows the appreciation others have for those who are serving the country…people who don’t even know me are thinking of me and showing they care. It made me really happy.” Pvt. Massapequa High School’s student newspaper, The Chief, won its first Gold Medal award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA), positioning it as one of the best student publications in the country. The honor also earned the staff an invitation to present a workshop they designed called Localize It: Your Publication vs. The New York Times at the 90th Annual CSPA Spring Convention at Columbia University, March 19th. “We’ve received other awards on the local and national levels in various categories over the years,” said advisor Elyn Coyle, “but winning the top

honor for the newspaper overall is like grabbing the brass ring.” Staff members were thrilled by the milestone and idea of presenting at the convention, citing the news acknowledged their talent, hard work and determination to produce a stellar product. This year’s staff includes EditorIn-Chief Meghana Rao, Managing Editor Nelson Gomez, Sports Editor Michael Letzter, Business Manager Matthew Colozzo, Photo Editor Brandan Lawrence and Copy Editors Joseph Fiola and Katharine Cresser. Meghana and Nelson, along with Coyle, will conduct the workshop at the convention. To be in the running

for an award, several 2013 editions of the newspaper were submitted to the association for evaluation. Entrants were provided a detailed analysis, including a breakdown of how to improve their publications. Coyle and “The Chief” staff were pleased to find that not many improvements were recommended. “This achievement was truly a collaborative effort, not only with the current staff but with staff members from the 201213 school year, including former Editor-in-Chief Joseph Zappa and former Managing Editor Jessica Crowell-Graff,” Coyle added.

The act of giving back was experienced at its finest by one special member of our U. S. military and a teacher who encouraged her students to remember the troops. Students in Jenny Gillam’s Personal Computer Applications class at Alfred G. Berner Middle School wrote letters and sent them, along with donated items, to soldiers; a project she’s done with her students since the 9/11 attacks. Educational Sessions The Lions Eye Bank for Long Island will be offering free eye donation educational sessions throughout the month of March in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, the North Shore-LIJ Health System announced recently. March is the 31st Annual National Eye Donor Awareness Month. Since 1961, more than one million adults and children have had their sight restored as a result of eye donations, according to the Eye Bank Association of America.

The Lions Eye Bank for Long Island, which is located at Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream and serves the New York metropolitan area, has provided the gift of sight to more than 12,650 people since its inception in 1986. “We hope during these educational programs to explain how eye donations work and debunk some of the myths surrounding this donation,” said Kenneth Manger, director of the Lions Eye Bank for Long
