There are only so many laps a Betta can swim around his plant, only so much gravel to push from one corner to another. Ah, but enough complaining. I’ve decided to turn over a new fin for my new year and focus on being positive and loving toward my Human, my Grammy and any other visitors who might like to visit and gaze upon my beauty. (Hey, I didn’t say I was going to take up modesty.) ‘Til next time, thanks to all the readers for their birthday greetings. It’s here! It’s finally arrived! The moment you all (well I and my Human) have been waiting for! My very first birthday in my bowl, celebrated this past weekend with my Human family. Who would’ve thought this day would come… Of course, in Betta years, that probably makes me about 47. Not to mention the countless days… months… years… I spent languishing in that tiny Tupperware container they kept me in at the pet store. But, ever since February 16th, 2015, the day my Human adopted me, all has been well. There was a party, with dinner, and even a few presents! What does one buy a Betta, you ask? Well, there was the pre-Birthday/Christmas gift of a brand new tank – complete

with a filter and a light and everything – which my Human has yet to transfer me into… something about not wanting to “traumatize” me without consulting with the “pet experts” at the store first. I haven’t received a scheduled moving date as of yet. Speaking of, I’m still patiently waiting to be taken on that shopping spree I was promised back in August for my six-month birthday. All the sales that have come and gone… just think what fancy toys and plants I could have accumulated by now! I must have at least enough for a small castle saved away. And pretty gravel… and maybe a leafy hammock to sleep in… and a seashell to decorate… Tiny brain, big dreams. The one thing I didn’t get was a fishy friend to play with. St. Baldrick’s Fundraiser The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money to fund the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives, has issued a lofty challenge to everyone who wants to help raise money for pediatric cancer research: be a hero for kids with cancer by shaving your head in return for pledges of financial support from family and friends. Participants find that shaving their head in solidarity with the approximately 160,000 children who are diagnosed with cancer each year and frequently lose their hair as a result of treatment, is a small sacrifice in

comparison to what these children endure. On Sunday, March 6th, volunteers will shave their heads to help Conquer Kids’ Cancer! The event will be held locally at Johnny McGorey’s in Massapequa Park, at 1 p.m. The head-shavings will commence at 2 p.m. They will also be raising money through raffles that have been donated by generous merchants and friends. This year, the event will honor Maya Annunziato and Colin Conaty. It is their hope that the stories of these children give others the courage and hope to live and love each day in all ways. Maya, a six year-old Massapequa resident, has been battling Acute

Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Despite all that she has been through, Maya remains a happy and loving child. She has shown incredible strength and bravery each day during her fight with cancer. As of June 2014, Maya has finished her treatment and is cancer free. Colin is a 10 year-old Massapequa resident and fifth grade student at St. William the Abbot, Seaford. Colin was diagnosed with an ependymoma. After countless surgeries and tests, Colin’s tumor was removed. Colin is in remission for seven years. His 10 year-old job and wonder consumes him and touches others.

State Senator Michael Venditto, State Assembyman Joseph Saladino, Nassau County Legislator James Kennedy, and Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joseph Pinto all took time out of their busy schedules to stop by Massapequa Cub Pack 590’s Annual Pinewood Derby on Saturday, February 6th. The Pinewood Derby,

which took place at Lockhart Elementary School, is one of the highlights of the scouting year. The scouts, with the help of their parents, design, build, and race cars that started out as nothing more than a small block of pinewood. “It’s a great opportunity for the boys to express their creativity and to spend

time with their parents as they work on their cars,” said Pack 590 Cubmaster Bill Leisen. “I’d also like to thank all our elected officials who came down to the derby, it really meant a lot to the Pack to have their support.” Judging from the cheers, smiles, and applause, a good time was had by all!

Committing to Play During a brief ceremony in front of family and coaches, 13 more Massapequa High School senior athletes have signed Letters of Intent to play sports at the collegiate level, bringing the number to 39 students so far this school year. Signing from Massapequa’s three-time state championship girls soccer team were Briana Furci, with Marist College, Melanie Hingher with Fairfield University, Skylar Vitiello with University of Hartford, Rebecca White with Rider University, and Mikayla Pugliese and Olivia

Rohrecker with SUNY New Paltz. From the boys soccer team, Peter Meyer will play for West Point, Dylan Nealis for Georgetown University and Jacob Liese for Elmira University. Celebrating his birthday, varsity football quarterback Bradley Baldinger blew out some candles before signing with Denison College. Girls lacrosse player Kole Pollock will join the team at Adelphi University and softball players Sydney Tamburello and Jessica Vento will play for York College of Pennsylvania

and St. Joseph’s College, respectively. “Your accomplishments are to be celebrated,” said John Piropato, director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics. “You have made Massapequa proud and I know you will continue to make us proud throughout your college careers.” Dr. Barbara Williams, principal of Massapequa High School, also commended the students for their achievements and advised them to “always remember where you came from and to give back to your community.”

STEM Center Opening

On Saturday, February 6th, the Theodore Roosevelt Council of the Boy Scouts of America opened their Council run STEM Center. Politicians and hundreds of scouts were in attendance for the opening. The opening was three years in the making. The STEM Center and Lab programs are available to teachers and all boys and girls, regardless of whether they are registered in scouts. TRC President Steven Grosskopf says, “It is my goal as President of the Theodore Roosevelt Council to provide new programs that will be

exciting to our young people. Programs that expose them to new experiences, programs that open their minds and help them explore new things in a safe mentorship environment. Not every kid is an outdoorsman, and scouting recognizes that. We must be progressive with our programs while keeping to our core value. The Boy Scouts of America is the finest program for young people today. “ Some of the programs they have include Robotics, Architecture, 3D Printing, Forensics, animation, Geology, Engineering,

Chemistry, Archery, Scuba, Medicine and Aviation. Congressman Peter King cut the ribbon welcoming everyone into the center. Lifeguards Wanted Registration is currently underway individuals interested in working as a lifeguard for the 2016 summer season. The Town of Oyster Bay is now hiring lifeguards at our pools and at North Shore beaches for the upcoming season, which extends from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
