So, one epic snowstorm/ blizzard/”Juno” (who names these things, by the way?) into the Winter of 2015, and I’ve just about had my fill. How about you? As lovely and peaceful as a blanket of freshly fallen snow looks on the landscape, unfortunately, “snow days” only last for about one day, if that. Once the plows emerge, and the salt and sand turns the pristine landscape into a mountain range of dirty, frozen boulders, the novelty wears off pretty quickly – even faster if you are the one responsible for shoveling it. This past week, after hibernating for as long as possible and savoring the

“day off,” I ventured into the great void of white, shovel and scraper in hand, and attempted to determine which mound might be my car. After wading through the untouched walkways and parking lot of my complex, it was time to begin the dreaded clearing-off-the-car process. Easier said than done. After standing on my tiptoes, vainly trying to reach the summit, I was able to push off most of the twofoot accumulation – only to have a mini-avalanche fall to either side of my car. What had been knee-deep snow was now waist-deep. Spectacular. And so it went, for hours, as I slowly made headway. Two things occurred to me during this time. #1 – I

desperately need a larger shovel, and #2 – I need to move to a warmer climate. Immediately. I realize that one major snowstorm through the first six weeks of winter qualifies as fairly fortunate. But seriously, did we need to make up for a season’s worth of snow totals in just one day? Mother Nature sure doesn’t play around. Add to that the fact that February – statistically speaking, according to the too-gleefulfor-my-taste newscasters – is the snowiest month of all and, well, refer back to point #2 above. In lieu of that, I suppose I could at least go shovel shopping before the next big one hits.

Greeting Card History The tradition of exchanging greeting cards can be traced back to ancient China, where people exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year. Over time, greeting cards were exchanged for various reasons, and by the 1850s greeting cards were transformed from handmade, expensive purchases to relatively affordable means of personal communication and well-wishing. Valentine’s Day greetings have been popular since the Middle Ages, when they were sung or spoken aloud to special people. Cards were popularized in the 1400s, and the oldest known Valentine created during this era is on display in the British Museum in London. Valentines were initially made by hand, but by the end of the 1800s, the process of making cards was handled by machinery. Esther Howland, an American printer and artist, was one of the first to publish and sell valentines in the United States. Yet it took a few more years for a card company to manufacture and distribute valentines. Keeping Cards Although there are no rules governing just how long to keep and display a card, most people keep them for five to seven days. Some special occasion cards, such as milestone birthdays or religious rites of passage, may warrant holding on to the card for posterity. However, the length of time cards are kept is entirely at the discretion of the recipient. Etiquette Sending cards requires a little know-how. Start out with a high-quality card to show that you value the recipient. If

East Lake Elementary School students are exploring the magical benefits of reading with the Disney family as they participate in the Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) Program. For this exciting, funfilled event, students pledge to read at least 15 minutes per day with their parents in an effort to build vocabulary skills, improve

comprehension and stretch their imaginations. This year’s theme is “Remember the Magic in Reading,” which is being reinforced with a host of engaging activities over a three-week period. With prizes at stake, students try to read as much as they can with hopes of attaining the most points for their class. To kick off the event, school administrators

delighted the students by dressing up as Mickey, Goofy, Minnie and Winniethe-Pooh. They danced around and welcomed the students to school in the morning, then participated in the school’s live morning broadcast. Similar PARP campaigns are taking place in each of the elementary schools in the district.

Spelling Bee Winner Sixth grader Brendan Deneen was crowned the winner of Unqua Elementary School’s first fourththrough sixth-grade spelling bee, qualifying him to compete in the Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee on February 8th. This bee is the official qualifying competition for the National Scripps Spelling Bee held in Washington D.C. during Memorial

Day weekend and will be held at 9 a.m. at Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse. Second and third-place winners were fifth grader Jessalyn Murphy and sixth grader Annabelle Lesser, respectively. All three winners received a trophy and a Barnes & Noble gift card. The bee began with more than 100 fourth-, fifthand sixth-grade students

competing in a preliminary bee. Then the winners from each class competed against each other for the school title. The 15 finalists were given study packets in order to prepare. The bee was conducted in rounds, and the contestants were seated in a random order that they picked right before the bee. The finalists went through 23 spelling rounds in about 45 minutes.

Come mid-February, florist delivery trucks can be seen making the rounds through neighborhoods all across the country. Such trucks are transporting thousands of bouquets, plants and other floral arrangements that serve as gifts on Valentine’s Day. According to the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association, florists take in around $400 million in revenue on Valentine’s Day. Roses may be the most popular flower come Valentine’s Day, but many

other blooms find their way into the hearts of excited celebrants as well. Flowers can be used to convey love, friendship, compassion and desire. In Victorian times, flowers were given specific meanings because only a few exotic flowers were readily available, and many of these meanings have withstood the test of time. Giving a type of flower that signifies you just want to be friends may not bode well for a relationship when the recipient was hoping for

more. As a result, it pays to understand the subtle meaning of flowers to make gift-giving easier. Turn Valentine’s Day Green The world may turn red, pink and white come February, but environmentalists urge the public not to forget about going green this time of year. Valentine’s Day can be made more earthfriendly with a few extra tips and some heightened

awareness with regard to the planet. Send a card made of recycled materials. Save paper and trees when purchasing cards by choosing those made of recycled materials. Or make your own cards from materials found around the

home. A handmade card may appear more heartfelt anyway. Give eco-friendly chocolates. Purchase chocolates that were made under sustainable conditions and from companies that provide farmers and other workers

with good working conditions. The Rainforest Alliance, for example, lists companies that are certified as environmentally responsible. Research jewelry production. Gold mining can be destructive and cause environmental

blight. Aim to purchase from retailers that limit mining waste and environmental damage. Another idea is to recycle old gold jewelry into new items. Jewelry stores can melt down precious metals and turn them into entirely new and beautiful pieces.

Give thoughtful gifts. If a loved one is involved with or supports a particular charity or environmental action group, consider giving a donation to that organization in lieu of a traditional Valentine’s Day gift.

The Town of Oyster Bay 2015 Distinguished Artists Concert series continues in February with a number of excellent performances scheduled at various libraries throughout the Town. Massapequa High School senior Ashley Markiewicz, an art student at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), has an exceptionally impressive body of work. This year, four distinguished art schools accepted her portfolio and encouraged her to apply as an early action candidate. She is also eligible for numerous scholarships. Ashley wowed admissions representatives from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, the Maryland Institute College of Art, and both the School of Visual Arts and the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. Last spring, she earned a perfect score at the New York State Teachers Association portfolio review, where student work

is reviewed and judged at various sites throughout the state. Presidents’ Day Spotlight Millard Filmore was the 13th President of the United States, assuming the nation’s highest office when President Zachary Taylor died in office after serving a little more than a year as president. Fillmore, a Whig lawyer from western New York who served as Taylor’s Vice President, was the last American president who was not affiliated with the Democratic or Republican parties. An early member of the Whig party, in 1851, Fillmore became the only president in American history to appoint a Whig Supreme Court Justice after his recess

appointment of Benjamin Robbins Curtis was confirmed by the United States Senate in December of that year. Fillmore rose to occupy the White House after a humble upbringing in the Finger Lakes region of New York. At 15, the future president was apprenticed to a cloth dresser but was admitted to the bar in 1823 and soon became a successful lawyer in Buffalo. Fillmore soon ventured into politics as well, using his Whig connections to run for the House of Representatives, where he served for eight years.

By 1848, Fillmore was realizing even more ambitious pursuits, as he was elected to serve as Taylor’s Vice President. He would not serve long in that role, as an illness that befell President Taylor on July 4, 1850, would claim his life just five days later. That thrust Fillmore into the presidency and right into the heart of heated debate surrounding the Compromise of 1850, a package of bills that aimed to defuse tensions and confrontations between the slave states of the south and the free states of the north.

Senior residents living in the Town of Oyster Bay who are looking for a ‘furever’ friend can look no further than the Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter. According to Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone, adoption fees are waived for senior citizens through the Town’s ‘Seniors for Seniors’ program. “Oftentimes people look to adopting a puppy or kitten when considering a new pet, however there are many advantages to taking home a ‘senior’ furry friend,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Generally speaking, senior canines and felines come already trained and ready for another chance at a good life.” The Councilman noted that under the Town’s ‘Seniors for Seniors’ program, the adoption fee and any cost associated

with spaying or neutering will be waived for a senior 62 and older who adopts a senior dog or cat. Seniors who adopt a dog would still have to pay the normal license fee. “Older pets have plenty to offer, not the least of which is love,” Councilman Macagnone commented. “Not only will you meet some great senior dogs or cats at our Town shelter, you may end up finding your new best friend.” The Councilman added that adult pets often require less supervision and less constant care than energetic puppies or kittens, making them great choices for older residents. Another consideration for those with grandchildren is that puppies and kittens sometimes exhibit playful nipping and clawing, which can frighten or potentially injure children, not to

mention that children can sometimes inadvertently be too rough with younger animals. “Adopting a mature pet who interacts well with children can be a great option,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “Typically, senior pets don’t have the same traits as their younger counterparts such as chewing, barking and jumping. Besides, adult animals can be every bit as cute and playful.” The Councilman added that the Animal Shelter, which is located at 150 Miller Place, Syosset, is open Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (516.677.5784). Geographic Knowledge Berner Middle School eighth grader Christopher Muscarnera is tops at naming the location of places around the world. He was crowned champion of the school-wide round of the National Geographic Geography Bee, allowing him the opportunity to qualify for the state level and possibly advance to the national level. Sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the bees at each level provide a way to spark interest and awareness about geography. Eighth grader Christopher Guido also gave a shining performance as runner up. Eleven other students

competed, including eighth graders Samantha Carroll, Andrew O’Brien, Nino Baghashvilli, Tiffany Wong, Trevor Kapuvari, and seventh graders Nicholas Yum, Lucas Tonello, Talia Cartafalsa, Mike Manougian, Daniel Lobacarro and Joseph Nolan. All seventh- and eighthgrade students took a qualifying assessment to determine a winner for each team. These winners then participated in the school bee held in an oral and written format where students answered questions in rounds. “The geography bee is a fun and engaging way

Gaines, the district’s curriculum associate for music, K-12, the students who were selected to perform were all members of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) AllState Honors Ensembles held in Rochester, NY in December or the NAfME National Ensembles held in Nashville, TN in October. These highly selective ensembles will begin rehearsals on April 9th and the performances will be in Providence, RI on April 12th, 2015.
