And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell? Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to

say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netflix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Massapequa High School - Ames Campus Chief’s Challenge club members recently discovered how the newly popular art form known as Zen Doodling reduces stress. The technique is based on drawing a series of repetitive patterns, which fosters a calming, relaxed state that helps clear the mind.

My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone. “Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try. About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-

out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs

took a seat… “Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

Chief’s Challenge

Aiming to Build With the support of the Unqua Elementary School PTA, the Unqua Postal Service, a program designed to increase the letter-writing skills of children, is up and running for the second consecutive year. The program was initiated to revitalize skills such as writing letters and addressing envelopes, which have been declining with the advancement of technology. While the program was

introduced in school, most of the letter writing is taking place at home so that students can see that writing occurs in different settings for different purposes. Students are able to write letters to any Unqua staff member including teachers, teaching assistants, custodians, monitors, kitchen staff, clerical staff, or members of security. Letters are mailed in the PTA mailbox in the

main lobby and fifthgrade students have the opportunity to serve on the “UPS Team” to help sort and deliver the mail. Each room in the school has been assigned an address and each hallway has been assigned a street name, such as Caring Street, Teamwork Way and Honesty Avenue. The street names tie in Character Education themes while providing addresses to deliver the mail.

Budget Meetings Set As the Massapequa School District begins to craft its proposed budget for the 2016-2017 school year, several public discussion meetings have been scheduled, providing residents with a chance to raise questions or concerns about the budget and become better informed about the budget process. Three meetings are scheduled between February 4th and March 17th in Massapequa High School’s Baldwin Auditorium, beginning at 8 p.m. The budget adoption and the public budget hearing will take place on April 7th and May 5th, respectively. The budget vote is May 17th. Following the district’s traditional format, the first meeting on Feb. 4 will center on general support, including Central Office administration, school facilities, transportation and estimates of employee

benefits; the second meeting, on March 3, will focus on all curriculum and instruction programs, as well as instructional support areas such as social work and psychology. The third meeting, on March 17th, will discuss limits under the New York State property tax cap, state aid and other information released from the governor’s executive budget that may impact the proposed school budget. Moving into the fifth year of the tax cap, the state comptroller’s office has announced a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of almost zero percent (0.12 %), the tightest restriction yet on a factor that helps determine the district’s tax levy. Because of prudent financial planning, the district is anticipating that the 2016-17 budget will continue all student programs and be within the New York State tax cap

limits. Residents should understand that although the property tax cap imposes a limit on the district’s overall tax levy, individual property taxes can fluctuate either up or down, depending on changes made in assessed value by the Nassau County Department of Assessment. Distinguished Concert Series The Town of Oyster Bay 2015-2016 Distinguished Artists Concert series continues into February with a number of performances at various libraries throughout the Town. The Distinguished Artists Concert Series is one of the Town’s most popular programs and runs now through May 2016. Long Islanders like Joan Fennel of Freeport hoped to receive a one-time grant to help pay her home heating costs. Fennel, a single grandmother who was affected by Hurricane Sandy is still reeling from the closure of her storm-torn business and mounting medical issues and is struggling to get current on her living expenses, including her utility payments. Living with her daughter and three young grandchildren, she receives regular termination notices from her utility companies despite her monthly attempts to pay her balances. She states, “As a senior citizen on a fixedincome, I need help and I’m no longer embarrassed to ask for it. I worked my whole life, but living on Long Island, I’m not making the income needed to support life. I’m making payments each month, but I just can’t keep up.” She acknowledged, “I am so grateful the support I am receiving through Project Warmth. I feel so much more secure knowing that my family will be warm during the coldest time of the year.” Project Warmth is available during the winter months, generally opening in December, and remains open until the funds are exhausted. With wind chills bringing temperatures into the single digits on Long Island, United Way of Long Island activated its emergency fuel fund, “Project Warmth.” Project Warmth is Long Island’s only non-government, Island-wide emergency fuel fund, serving as a safety net for individuals and families facing energy insecurity and are unable to pay their heating bills. Long Islanders seeking help to keep the heat on in their homes donned winter coats and hats to attend and apply for assistance during United Way of Long Island’s “Project Warmth Day” at the offices of their community partner agency, the Hispanic brotherhood of Rockville Centre in Rockville Centre. Eligible applicants include Long Islanders who are behind in their utility payments, have a low or empty oil tank, have received a disconnection notice, and/or can demonstrate financial hardship. On Project Warmth Day, Robert G. Keller, President of National Grid Foundation, presented Project Warmth with a gift of $125,000, to continue their support of the program. Keller met with several of the individuals who were applying for a Project Warmth grant, noting that “It’s incredibly gratifying to be able to see that we’re helping to make a difference in these people’s lives.” As Project Warmth applicants completed their forms, many of them still wearing their winter coats, Theresa A. Database Launches Each year on February 11th (2/11), United Way launches a statewide initiative 2-1-1 to educate communities about the valuable free, online directory of health and human services’ agencies and programs available in Nassau and Suffolk

counties. The Long Island Database is updated and managed daily and provides website visitors with detailed information on more than 10,000 community resources for help and assistance in a range of areas. In addition to the full

database, there are also special searches for specific populations including veteran’s services, services for those who are developmentally disabled and their caregivers and informational updates during weather emergencies. This

information, as well as a community calendar of events, can be viewed through multimedia platforms including Facebook and Twitter. United Way of Long Island coordinates the LI region and call center and the Middle Country Pub-

lic Library maintains and updates the database that provides the information for the call center. Middle Country Public Library provides training to the public on using the database at the library or by special appointment for larger groups or organizations.
