Peacocks & Pretty Things nostalgic and slightly weary of them. As we exited the bakery and made our way to the official Christmas shop located on the property, I spotted what appeared to be a large bird sitting on the railing of the ice cream parlor. “Is that real?” I whispered to my friend, “Or just a decoration?” We stared intently, only to be instantly startled. “It moved! Oh my gosh, it moved!” As we tentatively approached, we realized it was a GIANT peacock. And with that, no less than half a dozen others peered out from behind various corners and crevices, along with several chickens and peahens. Unfazed by the humans before them, they moseyed to and fro, pausing briefly to study us. Thoroughly infatuated, we wandered after them, attempting to snap pictures and even a few short videos of these majestic feathered creatures. As I knelt down and tentatively reached my hand out toward one especially beautiful specimen, my friend grabbed my phone to

capture the sight. The bird cocked his head slightly, examining me carefully, then strode purposefully toward me. Unsure if he was planning to sit on my lap or - more likely - to take a sizable bite out of me, I froze, backing away slightly. “Did you get the picture?” I nervously called to my friend. “Yes, I think I took about 27 of them,” she replied giggling. Alright then, no sense pushing my luck. I quickly stood up as the peacock stared at me, seemingly perplexed. “Sorry pretty bird, thanks for the photo op.” And with that, he fluttered his massive wings and took off, soaring to a nearby tree branch. By that point, a small crowd had gathered around us, amazed that this one bird had taken such an apparent liking to me. A little boy exclaimed to his parents, “Wow, they fly???” Peering up at the bird, now perched overhead, my friend and I looked at each other in utter amazement. “That,” I said, “was clearly the highlight of the day.” Beauty. It’s everywhere.

Beauty. They say it is in the eye of the beholder; but truly, it exists all around us, if we take the time to notice. My love of photography has certainly enhanced my ability to appreciate the aesthetics of my surroundings, from interesting cloud formations while waiting for sunsets, to pretty roadside blossoms that would otherwise be characterized as weeds to the undiscerning eye, to the novelty of light and shadow as it plays out upon a surface. Such is the abstract nature of visual “art.” And then there are the moments when it appears before you in its most natural, stunningly striking form. Case in point: several weeks ago, my friend and I enjoyed a late lunch at the famed Milleridge Inn, having both decided that it was the perfect locale after having not dined there in quite some time. To our surprise, the holiday lights were still on full display, with remnants of the Christmas season in every corner of the restaurant and shops. Having just finished dismantling my own decorations the previous week, I was at once

Exploring Engineering Kindergartners got an introduction to the engineering design process at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Under the direction of magnet and STEAM teacher Jennifer Tand, students used provided materials such as cotton balls, paper clips,

rubber bands, bottle caps, straws and more to make their first names. The STEAM challenge was the first of many that they will complete in their elementary school years, which allow students to explore science, technology, engineering, the arts and math.

Children learned about the engineering design process, which emphasizes the importance of planning. The kindergartners first had to sketch out their projects and identify which materials would be used for each letter.

McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District is promoting literacy through the 2018 Pick A Reading Partner program. This year’s PARP theme is “Paws for Reading.” During the program, which runs from January 22nd through February 11th, students will be asked to read each day and log their participation by recording the book title,

author and number of minutes spent reading. Classes will compete against each other for the highest participation in the school. “One of the most important skills our children learn is to read,” said Principal Dr. Amanda Lowry. “Reading creates a strong, positive influence and builds imagination, creative thought, and a foundation for a lifetime of

significant benefits.” The program kicked off with a schoolwide assembly by Squeaky Clean on January 22nd, hosted by the PTA. The band performed several songs about the importance of reading as students clapped and moved along. Additionally, students will participate in a book swap with classmates during their library session.

Story Telling Team Each pair had to select one of 14 images, which only contained a title and a single-line caption. They had to create a story based upon the image that would be one to two minutes long when read aloud. James Badagliacca and Anthony Pedalino selected the photo, “The Seven Chairs,” which only included a caption about one chair ending up in

France. They decided to write a story about the whereabouts of the other six chairs. Students worked on their Chromebooks and used Google Docs to collaborate. After their stories are written, each pair will film it with the use of a teleprompter and green screen, and edit using WeVideo.

Since 1997, the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) has been working to ensure Massapequa’s children, teens and young adults grow up healthy and make safe choices during adolescence. Its Lock Your Meds. Be Aware. Don’t Share Social Marketing Campaign seeks to combat the issues of heroin, opiates and prescription drug misuse among 12-25 yearolds in the Massapequas by collaborating with parents, residents, teens, and MTAC sector members and partners. With the help of Jack Minogue and Jaclyn Micillo, student volunteers from Ames High School,

as well as students from Massapequa High School’s Chiefs Challenge, Active Minds and S.A.D.D. clubs, many Massapequa and Massapequa Park businesses are now displaying MTAC’s Lock Your Med’s posters to increase awareness. “Thanks to the time and effort of so many students, the coalition has been able to reach residents with our prevention message where they eat, shop and work!” stated Diane Marascia, CoChair, MTAC and Advisor, Massapequa High School Active Minds Club. The Lock Your Meds campaign reminds parents and residents to secure their medications as

Knowing their Places Eighth-grader Conor Burns was the winner of the annual Geography Bee at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. The after-school event on January 17th featured 19 finalists who tested their knowledge of the 50 states. All students in the school took preliminary tests with 50 multiplechoice questions in early January, and the best scorer from each social studies class advanced. The finals consisted of multiple rounds with different formats. The first round featured individual questions for each participant, while in the

second round everyone was asked the same question and students wrote their answers on small whiteboards. Another round had questions based on a map of interstate highways. Conor and seventhgrader Ricky Chen competed in the championship round, in which they were asked the same three questions about U.S. and world geography. After answering all three questions correctly, Conor will now take a qualifying exam to determine if he will move on to the state competition of the Geography Bee hosted by the National Geographic

Society. The school competition was coordinated by social studies teachers Josee Charvet, William Chlystun and Danielle Kennedy. “This is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of national and international geography in a competitive environment,” said Dr. Brian Trapani, curriculum associate for social studies. “There was a high level of enthusiasm at this great event. We are proud of all students who competed and congratulate Conor on his accomplishment.”

Writing What’s Real Reading, researching and writing are the steps third-graders are following as they work on their nonfiction writing in Danielle McCaffery’s classroom at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students are writing books about animals. Students began by exploring several books to

look at different writing styles and identify the key elements of nonfiction stories. Each child then picked a topic, with monkeys, sharks, penguins and tigers among the animals chosen. They completed their research using books and online resources on their Chromebooks. The writing process will take several weeks

as students will create multiple drafts. They will review their work through peer editing and in conferences with Ms. McCaffery. Each book must have at least six unique sections, along with a cover page and table of contents. When the works are completed, the class will hold a writing celebration.

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” . . . this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry that reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. They operate a very impressive Food Outreach weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile manner because the Gospel

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will host a Girls Softball Team Tournament for players ages 10 to 12 on Saturday, April 7th and Sunday, April 8th at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. “The tournament is a great pre-season warmup for the girls and an excellent way to help them prepare for a competitive spring season,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Many quality teams are expected to participate, so the games are sure to be exciting and competitive.” Spots in the tournament are limited, so team coaches and managers are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. “Fields in the Town of Oyster Bay are among the finest in the nation, so each team will truly appreciate the professional atmosphere and high caliber of play,” Supervisor Saladino said. “It will be an outstanding experience for coaches and players alike.” The Tournament will be run by the Town’s Parks Department, Recreation Division. To register, each team must submit a registration form including the team roster, check or money order made out to the Town of Oyster Bay, and an insurance certificate listing the Town of Oyster Bay as additional insured. The Word of Kindness write words with negative connotations on Post-it notes, which were then hung on the window of the Pupil Personnel Services office. At the end of the week, students were asked to write positive words. Each note with a good word replaced a note with a bad word. The GSA also created several posters, which were hung throughout the school, reminding

students to think about the words they use. “No Name Calling Week is to show people that words can hurt,” said eighth-grader Kathleen Tumminello. “I hope that it can show people not to be mean to other people and that it spreads the message of kindness.” Elizabeth Livingston said that people may often use words not to be mean, but simply because they

don’t realize how those words can affect others. The goal of the week was to raise awareness. Social worker Marisa Boulukos said that teachers were encouraged to lead conversations about the impacts of name-calling within the context of their regular lessons. She also explained that students were encouraged to build each other up with kind words.

The national initiative of GLSEN was coordinated locally by Berner’s chapter of the Gay-Straight Alliance. As part of an activity, students were asked to

John Piropato, the director of health, physical education, athletics and recreation for the Massapequa School District, has been selected to receive the Athletic Administrator of the Year Award for Chapter 8. The honor will be bestowed upon him from the New York State Athletic Administrators Association. Mr. Piropato will be presented with the award at the annual NYSAAA Roy O’Neil Conference Awards Banquet in Saratoga on

March 16th. It is presented to a member in good standing of NYSAAA who has made an outstanding contribution to athletics over the years and has worked tirelessly on behalf of student athletes. This is Mr. Piropato’s 11th year in the Massapequa School District and his 31st year in education. He began his career as a physical education teacher and coach. The SUNY Cortland graduate holds certifications in school district and athletic administration.

There are 11 sections of athletics in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and Massapequa is part of Section 8. Mr. Piropato serves as president of modified athletics and is a member of the Executive Committee and Athletic Council, as well as the Championship Philosophy, Boys Basketball, Baseball, Girls Basketball Seeding and Nominations committees. “It is quite an honor to be selected by my peers in the Section as there are many great athletic administrators to choose from,” Mr. Piropato said. “I am proud to represent Section 8 and of course Massapequa with the award.” He will also be recognized locally by the Athletic Administrators of Nassau County at its Todd Heimer luncheon in June.
