Who is Paying for the Increases? By: Jeff Lambert jlambert@southbaysneighbor.com

We all deal with increases in expenses all the time. We recently learned that the minimum wage was increased to $10.00 per hour in our area, and it will continue to increase to up to $15.00 per hour by 2021. These types of increases are a result of decisions from our elected officials. On the surface, many people think this is good and fair; but when you delve deeper, you may find that it might not be so good after all. All businesses, including small businesses, must now figure out a way to deal with these increased costs. They now must decide how much of these costs their business can absorb and how much must now be passed on to the consumer. Many businesses are

still dealing with the large increases in their health care costs. Many businesses will be forced to eliminate positions, as well as minimize some of their services. Ultimately, it is the consumer who will be adversely affected by all of this. Let’s all hope for better days ahead! We have an opportunity with our new administration to cut the size of government and its excessive spending and waste. We have an opportunity to limit government control and waste in many areas such as healthcare, education, student loans and social service benefits. Able Americans should be in control of their own destinies, working and earning their own way in this world, and not

being enabled to rely on government handouts which ultimately become yet another cost to all of us hard working taxpayers. Government assistance is meant for those who are truly in need of and deserving of the help. These less fortunate Americans are the only ones who should be allowed to benefit from these costly government services. So, if you find yourself having to pay more for a product or service, or you seem to be waiting longer and longer for assistance in places of business or of government service, realize where this all started, and who is paying for all the wasteful government spending. It is US, THE TAXPAYERS.

Ancient History Pyramids, masks and mummies were among the many items on display at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, which held its Ancient Egyptian Museum. The sixth-grade social studies curriculum focuses on ancient civilizations and the museum has been a long-standing tradition at the school to culminate the unit on Egypt. This year,

the focus was on Egyptian innovation and how those ideas are relevant today. The young historians used textbooks and online resources to do research, then created their own artifacts and wrote description cards. Among the projects were a literature book with a hieroglyphics, a model of a trading boat and clay tiles depicting ancient gods. The sixth-graders transformed

I recently found out that my yoga studio, the one I have been frequenting for the last several years, will be closing come the end of February. Sure, there are other studios, other forms of meditation that can be explored; but this was my studio, the one I had come to regard as a sanctuary of sorts, a respite from the oftstressful daily grind. When I began taking classes there, some three or four years ago, my goal was to attend one, two – even three – sessions per week, at all different levels, in an effort to explore this newfound hobby. I had originally decided to look into the practice after

“retiring” from dancing for the previous 20 years, and determined that yoga would be the perfect combination of strength and conditioning, balance and relaxation, that I needed. Of course, my grand plans eventually dwindled down to about once a week, as I found a regular class that I loved. Every Wednesday (or as many as I could manage to make it to), I would look forward to those 75 minutes of guided technique and mental cleansing. Certainly, anyone can undertake the basic yoga stretches and breathing techniques on his/her own; but there is definitely something about a structured class which brings a whole new level to

the practice. And so, come March, I will need to find a new venue to attend, a new haven to explore this ancient ritual, which has so very many benefits in the modern world. How glad I am that I ventured into that particular studio all those years ago, and how very appreciative I am of the community of fellow “yogis” that I have come to know and respect. Here’s hoping that I find a new home for my hobby, one as welcoming and fulfilling and full of inspiration. ‘Til then, I shall savor these remaining weeks in my old familiar studio, surrounded by familiar faces; and I shall take a deep breath and appreciate all the goodness yoga has brought to my life.

What would you do if you were stranded on a deserted island? That’s the scenario fifth-graders in the Massapequa School District were asked to envision, as they took part in an enrichment activity that had them come up with creative ideas to survive and escape. A pilot STEAM program had students combine elements of science, technology, engineering, art and math. Magnet teachers at each elementary school sought to create a high-interest and fun activity that would require

critical thinking, problemsolving, communication and collaboration. With the success of the Desert Island Challenge, the goal is to create engaging STEAM activities for all elementary grades. The challenges fifthgraders faced were constructing a hut, building a bridge, creating a coconut catapult, designing a raft and sending a message in a bottle. The students were only allowed to use the materials provided by the teacher, and had to follow size guidelines. They used

the engineering process ask, imagine, plan, create, test and improve - to complete each challenge. Before students could even touch the supplies, they had to work as a team to come up with a design. The activities taught students the value of compromise as every member of the group had a voice in the process. Failure was not feared, but rather used as a learning tool as the students tested their designs and fixed any problems.

Massapequa Impresses Berner Middle School was the site of the inaugural Massapequa Vex Robotics Competition on January 8th, which featured teams from more than a dozen schools. Each team had to construct a robot, which were judged on performance and programming. Four teams from the Massapequa School District competed as the Robo Chiefs. One of

the groups received the Excellence Award, which was given to the top allaround team. They now qualify for the New York State Championships and the CREATE US Open Robotics Championships in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Another Massapequa team captured the Energy Award, which was presented to the team with the most enthusiasm. Brian Vanek, coach of

the Robo Chiefs and high school technology education teacher, was named Volunteer of the Year. Students from the Massapequa High School DECA Chapter ran the food service for the competition, and 12 graduates form the Class of 2016 volunteered their time to help run events.

New Learning Tool The Escape Room concept has come to the Massapequa School District as a new way to teach problem-solving and critical thinking skills while fostering communication and collaboration. The district purchased four kits from Breakout EDU, in which students have to find clues to open locked boxes. Teachers can choose

from more than 300 available games, which offer opportunities to use the breakout kits with every grade and in every subject area. Each kit includes locks, keys, timers, black lights and other contraptions. Students watch videos, scan QR codes with iPads, decipher secret messages and read maps. Some clues even use invisible ink

written on documents. Birch Lane Elementary School librarian Jacqueline Lee was one of the first to use the kits as a way to teach students about the Dewey Decimal Classification System. Each sixth-grade class was split into two teams - boys and girls - and they had a half-hour to uncover clues and crack four locks.
