s part of a unit on marine mammals, students in the Marine Biology class at Plainedge High School created a children’s book on an animal of their choice. To culminate the unit, high school students then visited a kindergarten class at Eastplain Elementary School, also in the Plainedge School District, to present their books to students and share in the learning experience. A great time was had by all.

Family and Children’s Association is seeking volunteers for its longstanding Ombudservice Program, part of a statewide network of certified volunteers who visit nursing homes, adult homes, and assisted living facilities in Nassau County. Ombudspersons serve as advocates for residents and their families. If you are looking for a meaningful way to improve the quality of life for our frail, sick and elderly neighbors who currently reside in long-term care facilities, this program is for you. The snooze button. That wonderful option to roll over and drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, or hours, apparently. Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway. So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is officially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having

made it my mission to complete the entire five volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netﬂix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult. (Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”

and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.) In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again. Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.
