chorus and orchestra. The ensembles consisted of 300 students from school districts across the county. Representing Lockhart were band students Vincent Eckert and Madelynn Krakoff, orchestra students Cole Arbisi and Kailey Burns, and chorus students Cooper Arbisi, Julia Duffy and Delena Martinez. Teachers selected

students based on their NYSSMA scores and recommendations. Under the direction of guest conductors, the All-County groups perform music that is challenging with limited rehearsal time. Lockhart’s musicians are under the direction of teachers Neal Bellon, Kathleen Dyckman and Clarence Kelly.

Two students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District will have their work displayed at the upcoming Colors of Long Island art show at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook. Fourth-grader Cassidy Morrow created a kaleidoscope design with watercolor pencils, using the letters of her first name to separate different colors.

She completed her project under the direction of art teacher Nicole Hassell. Sixth-grader Giada SanFilippo created a selfportrait using several different mediums. Half of her face was a photograph and the other half was drawn in pencil. She also used markers to draw pictures of her interests. Her art teacher is Melinda Wolfe. Colors of Long Island is an annual exhibit that affords

an opportunity for hundreds of students to display their artwork in a museum setting. Two pieces are chosen per school and the works of Cassidy and Giada were selected because of the strong use of technique and color. The show opens on Sunday, March 5 thand a reception will be held for art students from Nassau County schools on Sunday, April 2nd.

So… how is everyone’s year coming along so far? Are we still avidly pursuing our New Year’s resolutions, or have we moved on to other, more realistic, goals? Sure, we’re only slightly more than two weeks underway into 2017, but even the most promising “fresh starts” have been known to bite the dust not even a few days in to a new year. Personally, I don’t see the point. Chances are, the second something negative happens, your entire motivation will be thrown off anyway; so, rather than give yourself unnecessary reason for disappointment, keep your goals open and flexible – much like life. The best-laid plans more often than not do not go according to any pre-conceived notion of how things are “supposed” to transpire. The sooner we

either A) should not be on the road at all, in any season; or B) had best make like the groundhog and hibernate for the duration of the winter. Crawling, speeding, braking unnecessarily, swerving all over the road… such are just a few examples of the skills witnessed daily on my fairly brief commute to and from work. Throw in a flurry or two, and forget about it. Such is the state of life in January. And if not now, there are similar factors to face each and every subsequent month of the year. So take your resolutions – or whatever form of self-improvement you have documented for yourself in 2017 – keep them in your back pocket as a reminder, and move onward and upward. There will be a rainbow over the horizon soon enough. Just don’t drive off the road admiring it.

realize this, and accept it, the better off we will be in the long run. Take the weather, for instance. Mother Nature is not a force that can be predicted, especially at this time of year. Make all the plans you wish; chances are, they will be forced into “rain check” mode far too frequently. Personally, I’ve already had an entire weekend’s worth of appointments and obligations squashed due to snow, and have tentatively (fingers crossed) rescheduled for the next available opportunity. To be continued… until spring, most likely. And then there are the roads. Traveling on Long Island is a skill to be mastered under the best of circumstances. Throw in some inclement weather and it’s a regular three ring circus, complete with a collection of characters who

On January 20th, 2017, Donald J. Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America. The Transition of Power from one President to the next President is a tradition that has always ensured a peaceful and seamless changeover to the incoming new administration. Throughout this particular election cycle, beginning with the primaries and going through Election Day - and still continuing to this day - our country has been very divided. It is now time for everyone to accept the results of the choice of the American people and stand together behind this new administration. There have been many times in history that the Transition of Power has been tested. Some examples of these times were the transitions between President Kennedy to President Lyndon B. Johnson after Kennedy was assassinated;

President Nixon to President Gerald Ford after Nixon had to resign; and President Clinton to President George W. Bush after the 2000 election recounts. In all cases, the American people ultimately accepted the outcomes and showed respect to the Office of the Presidency of the United States of America. They did the right thing and worked together for the good of our country. We are now at the same point, and we all need to support our new incoming President. The disrespect and negativity that so many are displaying is a complete disgrace and an embarrassment to all of us and to our country worldwide. President Elect Trump’s priorities of jobs, better trade deals, strengthening our military, a new, improved and more affordable healthcare system, schools controlled at the state level, childcare assistance, tax

adjustments, cutting unnecessary government spending, reducing the national debt, securing our borders to keep America safe from terrorists, drugs and criminals, and always keeping America and Americans first will all begin January 20th, 2017. We have already seen some of President Elect Trump’s positive accomplishments, even before he has taken office. He has succeeded at keeping several large companies’ plants open and operating here in the USA, such as Carrier and Ford. This has saved many jobs and already helped many Americans. We should all be looking forward to many more positive actions and results from this new administration. We are one country, and we should all have and work toward common goals. January 20th, 2017 is our opportunity. God Bless the United States of America!

Deaf comedian John Maucere entertained about 800 students from the Massapequa School District and other communities during a performance on January 6th at Massapequa High School. Through sign language, Maucere told stories about social situations he has faced as a deaf person and his interactions with people in the “hearing community”

Unqua Supports Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District marked Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on January 9th with a variety of activities, including visits from police officers. This was the first year the school has taken part in the national initiative after Assistant Principal Patricia Quinn-Hendry was contacted by a representative from C.O.P.S. - Concerns of Police Survivors. The purpose is to encourage citizens to show

their support for members of law enforcement. Students were encouraged to wear blue to school. Several classes wrote letters of appreciation or drew pictures to send to local police officers. Parents working in law enforcement were invited to speak to students while in full uniform. Detective Patrick Franzone of the Freeport Police Department led a question and answer session with fourth-graders, while Officer Gina Tucker of

the New York City Police Department read “Hooray for Our Heroes” and had students in her son’s firstgrade class make a police officer craft. Ms. Quinn-Hendry said that the goal was to give students an understanding of what police officers do for the community. She said the activities were meaningful as many children have parents or family members who either work for or volunteer in the emergency services.
