Rise Above We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book. There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede. This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me

that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town will offer a Toddler Arts & Crafts Program throughout this winter. This 6-week program will be held at the Town’s Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room, and is open to two, three, and four year old boys and girls. Registration begins January 25th, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Town’s Parks Department Recreation Office in Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Rd, in Massapequa. “The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts program is a wonderful way to help support your toddler’s cognitive development

through the nurturing of their artistic expression,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This program has proven to be an extremely popular one here in the Town, and I urge those who wish for their toddler to participate to come down and register beginning Thursday, January 25th.” The Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is 6 weeks in duration, and residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take place on Wednesdays at 10 am (two year olds only) or 11 a.m. (three and four year olds) from February 21st through March 28th. Classes will also take place

on Thursdays at 10 a.m. (two year-olds only) or 11 a.m. (three and four-year olds) from February 22nd through March 29th. Each class is about 45 minutes to an hour long. The cost of the program is $20 per child. Space is limited and upon registration, the child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. Kind Hearts Blossom With the creation of a kindness tree, students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are being recognized for their good deeds. The tree, prominently displayed in the main lobby, is filled with paper leaves

that highlight the random acts of kindness that students have performed. Bella Vergakis was the first student to make the tree because she was a good friend during recess. The initiative was spearheaded by the Kindness Club under

the direction of teachers Maria Gargano and Janeen Signorile. Every morning, Principal Stephen Aspetti announces the names of the students added to the tree and the acts of kindness they did.

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s (GSNC) Board of Directors announces that Randell (Rande) Marie Bynum has been appointed as the Council’s newest Chief Executive Officer (CEO) following the recent retirement of former GSNC CEO Donna Ceravolo.

Bynum, a third generation Girl Scout, brings decades of experience enhancing the efforts of nonprofit organizations. Her work includes the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and the Girl Scouts of USA, private corporations and media entities with a focus on

education, community engagement and youth empowerment. “Rande embodies the spirit of a G.I.R.L [Gogetter, Innovator, RiskTaker, and Leader], and the Girl Scouts of Nassau County is delighted to welcome Rande as our new CEO,” said Wanda Jackson, President of GSNC’s Board of Directors. “After conducting a nationwide search, we are confident that Rande will be a terrific fit to lead our Council. Her years of experience and leadership abilities within nonprofit organizations including the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and Girl Scouts of the USA combined with her passion for empowering young girls will be a vital asset to us.” Prior to joining the Girl Scouts of Nassau County, Bynum served as independent contractor

On Tuesday January 9th, Legislator Sunderman had the honor of swearing in the Officers of the LongIsland ABATE. There are fourteen board members, two of which were newly elected members. Following their swearing in we had discussed some concerns such as, how the potholes were going to be handled come spring time and road safety. “Sharing the road with our motorcyclists is important as well as to make sure everyone gets

home safe, at the end of the day. Unsafe roads pose a very real danger to motorcyclists and we have to make sure they are safe for all vehicles; whether they have two wheels or four.” said Sunderman The Long Island ABATE or American Bikers for Awareness, Training, and Education is an organization which strives to provide training and education for motorcycle riders. Additionally, they not only provide bikers rights, but the rights of all motorists. Many of their members

are not bike riders but advocates for those who do ride. Sunderman was so impressed by their organization that he joined as a non-riding member. Meetings are held in Ronkonkoma and Massapequa, in order to accommodate all Long Islanders. corporate partnership and the development of the Girl Scout/Dove Self-Esteem Program. In her role at the Girl Scouts of the USA, she co-authored the acclaimed workbook Dove’s True You! -Sometimes I Feel Ugly and Other Truths About Growing Up. “I am thrilled to be back at GSNC as your new CEO and delighted to see how this Council has grown and changed,” said Bynum. “Over the last 25 years, I have been fortunate to work with the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and Girl Scouts of the USA, in addition to other organizations focused on empowering youth and bringing families closer together. I believe girls thrive by having a place to build courage, confidence and character where they can learn skills that will last a lifetime.” Girl Scouts of Nassau

Take 2 Simple Steps To Help Protect Your Family (NAPSI)—Many people may not realize that it only takes two minutes for a house to be engulfed in flames. The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home fires and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill. Have at least two ways to escape from every room. Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance where family members can

meet. Discuss the plan with everyone in the household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes. Conduct practice drills at least twice a year. 2. Install and maintain smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms halve your risk of dying in a home fire. Put them on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed. Never disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm

Police officers spoke about their roles in the community as Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District marked Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on January 9th. The guests included officers from the Nassau County and New York City police departments. Students were asked to wear blue as a show of support. Police officers discussed their jobs, showed some of the equipment they use and answered a wide range of questions during their classroom visits.

Many children wore paper hats designed to look like the real caps police officers wear. They also made cards to present to the uniformed guests. Members of the Student Council presented officers from the 7th Precinct POP unit with bags of candy to bring back to the station. Each piece of candy was symbolic, such as Life Savers for the roles as first responders and caramel for helping people get out of sticky situations. Law Enforcement Appreciation Day is a national initiative

Show of Appreciation sponsored by C.O.P.S. - Concerns of Police Survivors. Volunteers Wanted Fresh Air summers are filled with children running through the sprinklers in the grass, gazing at star-filled skies and swimming for the first time. This summer, join volunteer host families in Suffolk County, and open your heart and home to a Fresh Air child. Each summer,

thousands of children from New York City’s low-income communities visit suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. Madisen, age 11, has visited the MacKinnon family for the

past two summers. Host mom Linda said, “Seeing the world through Madisen’s eyes and enthusiastic spirit has made our whole family appreciate what we have. On her visit, Madisen joined us in our daily summer activities. She tried lots of things for the first time that we often take for granted;
