The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Christ the King RC Church hosted an International Peace Light Ceremony and concert featuring the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, December 14th. Reverend Joseph Davanzo welcomed everyone. Approximately 300 people attended the service including Scouts and Scouters from Nassau and

Suffolk County in addition to the parishioners of Christ the King R.C. Church and many from across Long Island. The Messiah portion featured a full orchestra and soloists. The service concluded with the “Hallelujah” Chorus. Refreshments and fellowship followed. The tradition of the Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980’s. The “Peace Light” campaign was originally organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Co.

On The Horizon By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As we raise a toast to the New Year upon us, let me take a moment to personally thank all of you – the readers – for your continued support throughout the years. As I embark on year number 10 of my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor, I am fast approaching another mini-milestone of sorts with this very column. In ten weeks, I will pen (or type, as the case may be) In Step #500. So many topics have been

touched on throughout the years, some inspired by the very fan mail and feedback I have received from all of you. It is with that in mind that I invite you to submit your own suggestions for future columns, en route to the next milestone, whatever it may be. Every writer writes for him or herself; at least, they should. But, without readers, there is little self-satisfaction to be had. So your feedback is welcome. Positive or negative, response equals readership, and

at least a limited degree of engagement. So let’s head into 2015 with the goal of making #500 just the beginning of the next wave of milestones. Send in your e-mails, “like” my page on Facebook, write, fax, phone… Let this be the year of audience engagement, of writing for the masses, of using the first 500 columns as a massive steppingstone to the future. In past years the Peace Light has been presented to Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, Mikhail Gorbachev, King Hussein of Jordan, members of the European parliament in Strasbourg, and the United Nations Troops in Kosovo. In December 2001 it was brought to Ground Zero. The International Peace Light is a worldwide symbol of peace and brotherhood. The light is given from one person to another as a gift with the wish for peace and forgiveness among all human beings. W o r l d w i d e , communities seeking international friendship and peace is a special concern of all Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, here and abroad. According to the ideals of Scouting, everyone is encouraged, all nations and peoples, through personal contacts to actively create Peace and fear-free living in their environment by being tolerant towards different ethnic, cultural or religious groups.

St. Rose of Lima students in grades 5 through 8 performed in the chorus and band as part of their annual Christmas Concert. The evening started off with a wonderful performance by the 5th and 6th grade students singing
