Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jackie Gordon and Councilman Tom Donnelly recently welcomed threetime Olympic figure skater Surya Bonaly to The Rinx in Wyandanch to kick off the 2018 ice skating season. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory and Town of Babylon Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma were also in attendance. Bonaly joined local skaters of all ages and offered advice on how to maneuver their way around the rink. Bonaly brought home a number of medals during her career representing France in international competition. In 1998, she brought the crowd to their feet at the Olympics in Nagano, Japan after landing a backflip on one blade, a stunt that has not been completed since. Today, Bonaly is a skating coach in Minnesota. The Rinx in Wyandanch opened last year as part of an ongoing revitalization effort in the hamlet. Public skating is available seven days a week. She will accept payment for taxes at her office in the Town Hall, 200 East Sunrise Highway, North Lindenhurst, NY 11757 or by mail, beginning December 2017 daily between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Tax Office will be closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. First half taxes are due December 1st, 2017, payable to January 10th, 2018 without penalty. After January 10th, 2018, one percent per month will be added on the first half to May 31st, 2018, after which date additional interest will be charged by the County Comptroller at his office at County Center, Riverhead, NY 11901. The Town of Babylon Tax Office will be accepting partial payments with penalty. We offer echeck and credit card payment through a telephone service or by the internet, which includes American Express, MasterCard, Visa or Discover. For payments by telephone, call 1.800.2PAYTAX (1.800.272.9829) or visit the website at www.officialpayments.com. At the prompt, use Jurisdiction Code 4232. You must have your item number and tax amount available. In addition, you can also pay through our new system, MuniTrax, where you can now view and pay your bill online. Visit www.townofbabylon.com. Transaction fees will be charged to the taxpayer based on the amount of the total charge for both MuniTrax and Official Payments. Total amount Warrant to be collected by the Receiver of Taxes for the 2017/2018 tax year is $700,172,303.41. Taxes become a lien December 1st of each year. New Year’s Eve is upon us - a night filled with merriment, an abundance of food, plenty of alcohol, and of course those dreaded resolutions. I want to work out more and focus on specific areas, as opposed to going to the gym and struggling to work out comfortably in order to burn calories to lose a few pounds. I want to help more people realize their health goals. This is new... I have been given a gift to help others, and for that I am thankful. She told Victoria you don’t need to be super smart or an expert to create an invention. She stressed, if you have an idea or a vision, “you need to follow through.” Adding, many people get discouraged and feel they can’t do it because there are so many obstacles. Fourteen year-old animal educator and journalist Victoria Bonavita recently had a chance to interview inventor, entrepreneur and author, Joy Mangano who is best known as the inventor of the Miracle Mop and appears regularly on HSN. Joy, who comes from Smithtown, was also the subject of the 2015 movie ‘Joy,’ that featured an all-star cast including Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Isabella Rossellini. The two met at her book signing that was hosted at Bed Bath and Beyond in Westbury. The book titled ‘Inventing Joy’, begins with a story of Joy rescuing her family dog Duke from drowning in their pool when she was just ten. Joy described how Duke’s paws were cut and bleeding, and how she wrapped them in bandages. After changing the bandages four times a day for the next two days, she thought, “there has to be a better way.” So she created what she called “special bandage booties”. They were like socks on the outside, but lined with gauze on the inside. The idea worked, and Duke got better. And so began the path of becoming the nation’s most celebrated female inventor. Catching Snowflakes “We have only this moment, sparking like a star in our hand ~ and melting like a snowflake.” ~ Sir Francis Bacon As we approach the end of 2017 and look ahead to the new horizons of 2018, we reflect. Each year is full of its own moments, fleeting instants of happiness and sadness, anger and elation, all coming together to form this composite of life as we know it. And in those moments, we form the memories which carry us forward to the next chapter. There are two schools of thought relating to this; the first is that things have the ability to change in the blink of an eye, to take on an entirely new, often unexpected
direction. This can be in the form of a beautiful surprise, or a tragic turn; there is simply no telling. We are well aware of these possibilities. In fact, we will often remark how grateful we should be for the present, how appreciative of our blessings and those whom we love dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, we tend to forget how very lucky we are.

No two are alike, and each one is exceptionally fragile and should be handled with care.

New year, new you… but only if you take the necessary steps to make it so. STEAM Lessons As part of its commitment to providing students across all grade levels with a sound education through STEAM-related lessons, elementary schools in the North Babylon School District hosted after-school workshops featuring Ozobots. Working in pairs, the students placed these miniature robots, which are equipped with light sensors, on an Ozobot sheet with pre-coded lines. The students were then instructed to replicate the code within their own course designs using multicolored Ozobot pens with sensors. The workshops and activities with the Ozobots were designed to prepare the elementary school students for higher-level programming. HARMONY CAFÉ
Harmony Café is a nonprofit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation.
When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event - a fresh meal and entertainment - on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in
Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café, which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members and sponsors are needed. Sponsors will be mentioned on Harmony Café’s website and in their newsletter, and are able to place their business information at each event they sponsor! The men’s lacrosse team from Farmingdale State College and Team 91 joined forces to bring holiday cheer to students with intellectual and other developmental disabilities at the Saul and Elaine Seiff Educare Center. Over 50 members from the men’s lacrosse team and Team 91 attended the event, bringing holiday cheer and gifts! All the gifts were purchased and donated by the teams with each student’s needs in mind. The students were delighted to see Santa and spend the day with the lacrosse players!

Mrs. Keeler introduces the concepts to the students as 7th graders and as they become more experienced in this highly interactive and collaborative method of bringing literature to life, by 8th grade, the students’ presentations gain some serious momentum. Their sometimes heated debates and active involvement in showcasing the story line for their fellow students are clear evidence of how engaged these young adults are
in the reading process, something often lacking in Middle School students today. SSCM’s Lit Circles allow young minds to think analytically about the works they are reading. Further, for these students preparing to make their way to high school within the coming year, the process also allows them to take responsibility for their own learning and take ownership of the outcomes of their study habits and collaborative work - life skills they will take with them for the long haul.

PUZZLE ANSWERS: Hundreds of local runners recently took to the streets of the Town of Babylon to participate in the annual Run for the Warriors hosted by Councilman Tom Donnelly. Participants of all ages included veterans, their
loved ones and others who wanted to honor the sacrifices made by the members of our military overseas. A number of wounded veterans participated in the run, which included three routes of varied distances (10K, 5K and 1 mile), by
riding hand and foot cycles. Many participants honored loved ones in the military, some of whom gave the ultimate sacrifice, by carrying signs and American flags as they completed the course.
