winter tradition continued as the kindergarten students at North Babylon’s William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School participated in the annual reading of Chris Van Allsburg’s The Polar Express. After the story and a surprise visit from Santa Claus, the students worked with their parents to make gingerbread houses. Using milk cartons as a base, they created their houses using their imagination, plenty of icing and candy.

Babylon Memorial Grade School’s “brown bag” enrichment program offers students the opportunity to explore and learn about a variety of subjects from local enthusiasts and professionals in the field. The program, which is held on select Fridays during school lunch times, has been widely embraced by the student body since its introduction. Past workshops have

focused on topics such as stress management, bike safety, nutrition and health, Zumba instruction and shorthand. At the conclusion of each program, the students are presented with an honorary certificate of completion. Under the tutelage of sixth-grade science teacher Andrew Sheltz, students recently explored the topic of cave diving. Mr. Sheltz, a cave diver since the age

of 13, spoke with the group about what this activity entails, the types of safety equipment needed, the reasons for cave diving and the various places he has visited. To help them visualize the subject, he showed students a few clips from night dives in open water. Using the school’s Google Chromebooks, the students were able to research cave diving locations across the world.

To culminate a Common Core Learning Standards module on human rights, the fifth-graders at North Babylon’s Parliament Place Elementary School recognized the United Nations’ Human Rights Day on December 10th. Leading up to this day, the students studied the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and learned how those rights are demanded in some

countries and violated in others. “The module taught us that everyone has the right to a house, an education and affordable medical care,” said Matthew Kendall, a fifth-grader in Staci Manning’s class. “It’s important everyone has these rights because you need education to learn, a house for shelter and medical care in case you get sick.”

The elementary festival will be held on January 29th and the secondary festival on February 2nd, both at Ward Melville High School.

The students also created their own passports, which included the preamble to the UDHR, and made their own T-shirts, which they wore on December 10th. The front of each shirt featured the top five rights the individual student deemed most important, while the back of the shirt displayed their reasoning for why they had chosen those rights.

West Babylon Senior High School students Shannon Reahl and John Nash were nominated by their physical education teachers to receive the Suffolk County Zone Award, presented by the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. At a ceremony held in early December, Shannon and John

received certificates and medals recognizing their outstanding achievement as physical education students, scholars and citizens. The Suffolk Zone honors only one male and female senior from each high school in the county. To be eligible, students must have exceptional grades, demonstrate outstanding character, show leadership

skills in both physical education class and general schoolwide activities, and serve as role models for other students. “It is an honor to receive this recognition,” said John. Shannon agreed, stating, “I like to set goals and challenge myself personally, so the fact that someone else recognizes my efforts is great.”

Throughout the month of December, elementary students in the West Babylon Union Free School District learned the value of giving back by working together to make the holidays a little brighter for those less fortunate. Students throughout

the district took part in the annual Mitten Tree drive, in which they decorated a tree with mittens, gloves, hats and scarves. The items were then donated to those in the community in need of warm winter wear. The initiative began eight years ago when

school nurse Jennifer Autera shared the idea at Tooker Avenue Elementary School. “I saw it being done in my daughter’s school and thought it was a great way to spread warmth across the community,” she said.

The West Babylon School District has been examining the impact of declining enrollment. On Tuesday, January 7th, 2014, a study group comprised of community members and staff will present factual information to the Board of Education with regard to maximizing the utilization of school facilities in the future. Ghosts Of Christmas Past

Several schools in the West Babylon Union Free School District hosted a toy drive throughout December to benefit the John Theissen Children’s Foundation. In many cases, the collection initiatives were organized by the schools’ student council members, who decorated the posters that hung in the hallways of their

respective schools. The signs advertised the collection and encouraged members of the school community to donate a new, unwrapped toy for the cause. “The children who get these toys are in the hospital and have to deal with the challenges that go with that, so it is nice to try and spread some joy to them at Christmas,”

said Jordyn Hickey, the student council president at Forest Avenue Elementary School. “There is always a wonderful turnout during this annual event,” added Forest Avenue student council adviser Timothy Kahler. “It’s terrific to see the students come together to help those less fortunate.”

As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering – well, any gathering really – in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reﬂect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. With the passing of my grandmother earlier this year, there was an immediate sense that this holiday season would be a bit different. So many years – decades, really – spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the

oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details

and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al, also since passed, mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend! Either way, I know I will have at least two angels watching over things to make sure all goes smoothly.

West Babylon Union Free School District fourthgraders joined their music teachers at the fifth annual SCMEA PEAK (Parents, Educators and Kids) music festival at Northport High

School. Students, parents and music teachers attended music and dance workshops throughout the day. Students were chosen by lottery from a pool of

those who love music and demonstrate an ability to excel in music class. Throughout the day, fourth-grade students and their teachers were provided with

opportunities to learn and experience music in a variety of unique ways. The following talented students were chosen: Forest Avenue Elementary School

Kindness Counts Recognizing that the best way to stop bullying is to foster positive interactions and acts of kindness among individuals, Babylon Elementary School adopted the mantra “kindness counts” to encourage and celebrate acts of kindness within the school. As part of the yearlong campaign, students have

taken a kindness pledge, promising to speak and act in caring ways, and received silicone bracelets that read It’s Cool To Be Kind and Kindness Starts with Me. To reinforce the messages of the program, teachers addressed each of the points noted in the pledge through readalouds and targeted roleplaying scenarios.

Additionally, students and staff members have been recording acts of kindness displayed by others on leaves and placing those on a kindness tree in the main lobby. Students who are caught being kind throughout the year will also receive “It’s Cool to Be Kind” stickers.

outstanding character, leadership, and for being a role model in class. Nick has committed to attend West Point, where he will also play lacrosse. Mikaila will be finalizing her college decision this winter.
