Supervisor Schaffer presented Leo with an official Town proclamation to declare Tuesday, December 23rd, 2014 as “Leonardo Fernandes Day” in the Town of Babylon to acknowledge him as a role model in our community and congratulate him for his achievement. Leo was a star player North Babylon High School, where he earned All-State, All-Region and League MVP honors. As a midfielder for the Stony Brook University Seawolves, Leo was a four year starter and became the school’s all-time leader in points scored. In addition to setting records, Leo was named America East Midfielder of the Year three times and was Stony Brook men’s soccer’s first ever All American, among other accolades. In 2013, Leo was selected by the Philadelphia Union in the fourth round of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft. This past season, Leo appeared in 13 games, earning two goals and one assist.

‘Tis The Season For Memories By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Christmas time is here, once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column… As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma
bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family
Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

The West Babylon School District bids farewell to Superintendent of Schools Anthony Cacciola, who will step down for purposes of retirement, effective January 10th, 2015. In a letter to the Board
of Education, Cacciola said, “The past 38 years have been rewarding and memorable. The friends, colleagues and associates I have come to know are countless and many will always be a part of my life, but I am ready to begin a new chapter.” Cacciola is a graduate of West Babylon Senior High School and says he remembers the days when he used to ride his bike to the junior high school prior to having a driver’s license. He accepted his first position in 1976 as custodian for the district in 10th grade, working

He took on the role of school business administrator in 1993, followed by his appointment to assistant to the superintendent for finance, a position he held for five years before becoming assistant superintendent for finance. In 2007, Cacciola was named the district’s superintendent of schools. Outside of the district, Cacciola served as president of the Suffolk County Association of School Business Officials from 2004-2005 and as president-elect of the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association in 2014. Board of Education President Lucy Campasano said it has been a pleasure

The students at William E. DeLuca Elementary School formed a food chain and filled the pantry at St. Paul’s Church. These efforts are highlighting the holiday season as the perfect time to give back for worthy causes and teaching students about the importance of charitable endeavors.
