On the local front, the Kindergarten class worked on designing and sending homemade Christmas cards to local veterans. They will be distributed to our heroes through a wonderful organization called We the People Giving Back. They are a non-profit organization, whose goal is to honor the sacrifice of veterans, their families and those in public service, as well as those who have fallen in the name of
freedom and to provide their families with the reassurance of our nation’s endless support and gratitude. Bringing these types of activities to Kindergarteners helps them see outside of the small world in which they have lived for the first five years of their lives. It builds empathy and helps them see how small acts of kindness can make a difference in someone else’s life. Most importantly, it leaves the children with an important message about compassion for others and the spirit of giving.

Christmas time is here. The days and weeks and months of planning and preparation, of shopping and wrapping and decorating and baking, have all led to this brief window of time, from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day, which lends itself to all sorts of magical moments and memories. These are the days we remember for years to come, the snapshots we savor, the recipes we pass down from generation to generation. Say what you will about the commercialism and chaos that has engulfed our society – this the time we
can recapture the true spirit of the season. Speaking of commercialism, anyone who attempted to purchase Adele tickets in the last week or so was faced with the reality that, unless you have thousands of dollars at your disposal to splurge on a pair of seats at MSG, you had best sit back and enjoy that $15 CD and accept the fact that live performances are becoming increasingly out of reach for the average consumer. For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration. ‘Tis the season, indeed. The upside? West Babylon Junior High School students participated in the Hour of Code activities throughout the week of December 7th. The activities reinforced concepts taught in other subject areas by integrating math, English language arts, science and technology standards. Students spent more than two hours in the computer lab engaging in the tasks and writing code in a language called Java Script. The code enabled students to control the characters’ actions

through increasingly difficult tasks. Students had to analyze, problem solve, use their creativity and collaborate with each other to be successful. Several students were so inspired by the experience they have begun the 20hour after-school course. The Hour of Code is a nationwide program designed to introduce students to the world of computer sciences and is sponsored by companies like Microsoft and Apple.

On Sunday, May 18th, Matthew J. Spadone was on his way home from Tanner Park. He witnessed a motorcycle with two people riding west on Montauk Highway get cut off by a dark-colored sedan. This caused the motorcycle to swerve into oncoming traffic; the passenger was thrown off and her leg was run over by the back tire of the bike. She will accept payment for taxes at her office in the Town Hall, 200 East Sunrise Highway, North Lindenhurst, N.Y. 11757 or by mail, beginning December 2015 daily between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Tax Office will be closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays.
