irl Scout Troop 2780 in North Babylon recently did a “Chores For Charity” activity, doing various chores at home to earn 25¢ to 50¢ for each over two to three weeks. With the total money collected, they went on a scavenger hunt at Pathmark in North Babylon, searching for items needed at the local food pantry. Once all was collected and paid for, they donated the items to the North Babylon Town Food Pantry.

Savor The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week. Seven days. One hundred sixty eight hours. (We won’t get into minutes and seconds – you get the idea.) This is precisely how much time remains before Christmas. And with the virtual countdown comes that age-old holiday anxiety, the mad rush to finish writing out the greeting cards, shopping for gifts, wrapping, cleaning, cooking, baking… whatever your traditions call for in the race to conjure that yearly sense of merriment. Right. The holiday spirit. That is what all the fuss

is about, after all. Lest we forget the reason for all the racing around, the endless “To Do” lists, the exorbitant credit card bills… all for a day or two of celebration with family and friends, neighbors and loved ones. Throughout the month of November, 40 staff members from North Babylon High School and Robert Moses Middle School helped raise money and awareness for prostate cancer by participating in the annual Movember Charity Drive. Organized by high school teachers Michael Goetz and Victor Manzella as well as Richard Del Gaudio, the district’s mathematics curriculum associate, each participant donated $10 to become involved in the monthlong mustache-growing event while also gathering donations from friends and family members. “Last year a few of us participated individually in Movember, but we decided this year to come together as a large group and raise funds for a good cause,” said Mr. Manzella. According to the U.S. Movember website, the charity encourages men to get involved in their health and aims to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, ultimately reducing the number of preventable deaths. Noticing the new facial hair on their teachers’ faces, the students at NBHS and RMMS were excited to get in on the action and learn about the cause. To include the students in its fundraising efforts, each school sold fake

mustaches on November 27th. In total, the Mo-Bros and Mo-Sistas collected more than $900 for the

cause, which was donated in the name of NBHS teacher Diana Simulcik, whose son battled and beat testicular cancer.
