Christmas Conundrums And just like that, it’s less than two weeks until Christmas. No sooner did I unpack my infamous Christmas closet and brace myself for the avalanche of décor which poured forth, then I must now begin to contemplate how in the world I’m going to fit everything back where I found it. ’Tis the season, indeed, short as it may be. I’m sure I am not alone in discovering that, upon surveying the annual spread of lights and battery-operated trinkets, there are always some casualties carried over from the previous holiday season lights that no longer twinkle, animated knick knacks that have become somewhat more stationary, garland that was torn by the wind… whatever the case may be. This year, remembering I had taken my remaining lights and

tossed them in the trash in frustration somewhere between Christmas ’16 and the dropping of the ball in Times Square, I knew I was in the market for replacements. Of course, not having measured prior to heading to the store, I was forced to guess at what might fit. Once home, I found that A) the strand of lights barely stretched across the window frame, necessitating an extension cord to reach the outlet; B) the multi-colored assortment I had chosen came with a fun bonus feature, a “twinkling” variation leaving me constantly squinting to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating; and C) the best part of all, the frequent sound of the entire strand falling from the top of the window, as a few strategically placed pieces of

tape gave way. Every. Single. Night. On the hour, at least. How many days until Christmas? And with that, I have yet to begin the process of shopping, planning the Christmas Eve menu, or mailing out my photo card creations - another debacle if ever there was one. Suffice to say, in my haste to choose pictures and arrange them in the template I had selected, I neglected to “ﬂip” the card over and notice it was, in fact, a postcard. How very traditional. Season’s Greetings from my apartment, where Christmas rarely goes off without a hitch, the lights never stop blinking, and the closet door may indeed fall off its hinges before the final present is wrapped. Darn, wrapping paper.

Bond Vote Results On Tuesday, December 5th, residents in the North Babylon Union Free School District voted in favor for a Bond Referendum in the amount of $69,249,5000 for various facilities improvement projects. There was 872 yes votes and 499 no votes.

Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. HOLIDAY MANTEL DESIGN CHALLENGE!

In the spirit of the holiday season, students at Babylon Memorial Grade School took part in Thanksgiving-related lessons and classroom activities. Technology teacher Danielle Weis recently took the time to assist students in sharpening their computer-based skills by utilizing the Microsoft Word and Office 365 programs to design their very own Thanksgivingthemed place mats. The completed projects included facts about the

holiday, including what the students are thankful for every day, and their favorite aspects of Thanksgiving. Additionally, students in Kelly Arcoleo and Kim Gentile’s fourth-grade class transformed into culinary experts for an afternoon as they prepared delicious baked goods for those less fortunate this holiday season. With the help of volunteer family members, the students carefully followed directions and measured out the provided ingredients to create tasty loaves of banana bread.

In support of World AIDS Day, West Babylon Senior High School students, staff and faculty joined together against the fight on November 30th. The day is dedicated to the ongoing fight against AIDS and the struggles faced as both a community and a nation. Wearing their red ribbons, the school was part of the global movement supporting this year’s

theme of “Let’s End It,” referring to the isolation, stigma and transmission of the disease. West Babylon High School students put together two performances to educate their peers and their community on HIV/ AIDS, how to prevent it, and how to show compassion to those living with the virus. Students took to the auditorium stage for choreographed dance performances, informative

skits, inspirational songs and poems and video presentations. With more than 34 million people around the world affected by the disease, World AIDS Day is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, support those living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.

South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District has a tech-savvy kindergarten class working on touchscreen Chromebooks this year. Kindergartners in Alison Chiquitucto’s class are using them daily to support and enhance their learning. Students are engaged and enthusiastic to use the technology and show off their accomplishments.

They are exploring and problem-solving with the technology — from figuring out how to navigate the screens, to changing colors of text and backgrounds, to adding more and more letters to their words. “The types of rudimentary skill acquisition, creative thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and pride of accomplishment that these student experience today

Learning Enhanced will serve as the basis for their success in college classrooms or corporate think tanks,” said South Bay Elementary School Principal JoAnn Scott. The 1:1 Chromebook imitative also allows the students to progress at their own pace. Getting Business Savvy Pokémon to the United States toy industry. The students’ project, which they had developed with the assistance of Babylon Junior-Senior High School technology teacher Brian Katz, is a business plan to create reusable water bottles containing an impurity detection and filtration system. Compassion Without Borders Ten Babylon JuniorSenior High School student leaders recently attended the Compassion without Borders Leadership Conference held at Islip High School, where they participated in workshops centered around community service and creating a culture of

compassion, acceptance, tolerance and positivity in school. The conference is sponsored by the Suffolk County High School Principals Association, as 350 students from 35 Suffolk county high schools were in attendance this year. By day’s end, the

attending students left with a multitude of tools and ideas they’ll be able to utilize in organizing the Awareness weekend event, an overnight teambuilding event which will be taking place early next year.

COLLECTIONS FOR A CAUSE - In partnership with Long Island Cares, students throughout the Babylon Memorial Grade School were encouraged to assist hurricane victims throughout the United States by bringing in items such as school supplies, bottled water and small clothing items.
