Beards For Charity In addition to the annual toy collection for the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, several members of the West Babylon High School faculty got into the spirit of giving this November. In a unique fundraising drive, every male teacher who volunteered to participate was required to grow a beard and pay an
entrance fee of $20. Once the initial fee was paid, donations were accepted from others who wished to contribute to the cause. This fundraiser was done in the style of the popular “Movember” fundraiser that generates awareness of prostate cancer by having participants grow moustaches during the month of November. The
West Babylon High School teachers decided to take all funds collected and help the needy families of the West Babylon community. The approximately $800 raised will be used to purchase additional items which were not collected through the district-run adopt-a-family program.

high school’s previous art room into a new laboratory. During a recent session of the 12th-grade research class, taught by Claire Birone, the students provided Mrs. Santmann and members of the administration with an upclose look at the projects they are completing. Jed Dale and Max Pitagno explained their project, “The Bioremediation of HFCs Utilizing Scendesmus Algae in a Titanium DioxideActivated Charcoal Solution.” The students discussed how they are using treated algae to break down HFCs (car coolants) into nontoxic chemicals inside the algae themselves, while displaying the device they created to accomplish this task. Emily Brown, Sara Mikovic and Meredith Wardell spoke about their project, “The Effects of the
Derived Organic Pesticide Amygdalin on the Growth Rate of Plants.” The small group discussed how they are using a chemical extracted from apricot kernels, which they proved last year is effective against termites. They are now investigating how plants are able to survive when exposed to this same chemical. The students within the research program plan on entering their projects into this year’s Long Island Science and Engineering Fair and New York State Science and Engineering Fair, both of which are Intel-affiliated fairs. The school’s science research program continues to be of growing interest to students in grades 8-12, and the new facility has helped to enhance group and independent research skills.
Youth Orchestra Openings The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is inviting high school-aged orchestral musicians and choral singers to audition for the July 8th through 21st, 2014 performance tour of The People’s Republic of China. The two-week tour will include performances and visits to Beijing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Yangshuo, Guilin and Shanghai. The tour will also explore major attractions such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Terracotta Warrior Museum, and the Giant Panda Research Base. An optional, additional week of touring in Hawaii will be offered. MYO ensembles have embarked on several international tours over the years with concert visits to Central and Eastern Europe, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, China, Australia
and New Zealand, Spain, Italy, and Greece. John McNeur, founder and former Executive Director of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York, said, “This has proven to be a life-changing experience for so many young people. Beyond the incredible experience of spreading goodwill through their music, the musicians have had so many opportunities to interact with people of very different cultures. Thanks & Giving Turkeys, Pilgrims and Native Americans were the subject of many classroom discussions at Babylon Elementary School this November. From history lessons about the first Thanksgiving to discussions on the importance of community service, the students learned about the meaning behind the holiday. During the month, students and staff worked to make this Thanksgiving a bright one for others by contributing to the school’s annual food drive. As a result of the building’s overwhelming generosity, several boxes were filled to the brim with nonperishable breakfast, lunch and dinner items. The collected donations were packaged and delivered to several local families in need just before the holiday. The school’s secondgrade students helped kick off the holiday weekend with their traditional Thanksgiving Feast. Prior to the event, the students put their creative skills to the test and fashioned Pilgrim and Native American hats
and shirts from paper. They wore these artistic pieces as they proudly marched into the cafeteria, where they
sang a few songs, including a piece they called The 12 Days of Thanksgiving, and enjoyed a healthy feast.

There were the motion figurines in the windows, the collectible Snowbabies village… all signs that the holiday season had officially arrived. I hope that this year, this apartment, this Christmas tree, will all be the beginning of my own holiday traditions, to be built upon with each passing year. Little by little, one ornament at a time, bringing the magic of Christmas home.

Just last week, I purchased my very first Christmas tree, complete with twinkling white lights, red ornaments and glittery accents. It’s not Rockefeller Center spectacular, but it’s mine, in all its 6 ½ foot “slim” glory – because, let’s face it, once you actually furnish an apartment, you realize there’s not a whole lot of room leftover for anything else! And so it begins, the decorating, that tedious task we all dread yet somehow become fully engrossed in
the minute the plates are cleared from Thanksgiving dinner. It’s a slow process, but a fun one nonetheless. And for me, this will be my first holiday accumulating Christmas novelties to display in my own cozy living quarters. There’s something about holiday decorations that immediately brighten up any room, or street, or neighborhood… the magic of the season personified. I remember celebrating Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house and being positively mesmerized by the – what seemed to me – gigantic Christmas tree,

Dance Demo Students of Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District spent time during their physical education classes learning
the fundamentals of square dancing. Members of the Forest Avenue school community put on their bandanas and kicked up their heels
Honoring Thanksgiving during the PTA-sponsored Fall Festival Square Dance Hoedown. Students showed off the fancy footwork they had been learning all week.
Throughout the month of November, students of the West Babylon Union Free School District studied aspects of the first Thanksgiving. At Forest Avenue Elementary School, former kindergarten teacher Sue Dieterle returned to delight students in Carolyn Bogart’s, Alyson Russo’s and Kristen Wilken’s kindergarten classes with an authentic Native American presentation that included Native American dancing. The children used the senses of sight, touch, hearing and smell throughout the presentation as well as during the Thanksgiving DANCE DEMO - Students of Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon feast they held in class Union Free School District demonstrated their square dancing skills during the PTA- later that week. At Tooker Avenue sponsored Fall Festival Square Dance Hoedown.
Elementary School, Louise Pino’s kindergartners compared and contrasted Native Americans and Pilgrims. The students created “I Am Thankful” booklets and wore Native American and Pilgrim costumes they had made in class. They also studied
the ways in which the Pilgrims were thankful and considered the things for which they are thankful. They discovered the Pilgrims were not unlike themselves in that they were thankful for their families, food and homes.
