In addition, students were introduced to the procedures for introducing new legislation and the roles of various departments in each branch. The program culminated with a mock legislative session, during which the students assumed different roles, collaborated and selected a controversial issue of local concern to debate. They also drafted legislation, held public hearings and voted after debating pros and cons. Some men don’t even attempt the impossible and instead settle for a large bow on its own; others give it a whirl and wind up with a mass of crumpled wrapping paper, covered in tape, with only about 75% of the box actually, you know, wrapped.

I would like to br ing some much ne eded attention to our local animal shelters. This past summer, I decided to volunteer at the Babylon Animal Shelter. I go there three days a we ek and walk the dogs that are there, hoping th at one day someone will co me in and take them home. Many of these dogs are large breeds an d very excited to see anyo ne that shows up to give them some love. To everyone, I say pleas e adopt a shelter pet (cats to o), and if you aren’t looking to adopt, you could volunteer to help mak e their stay at the shelter just a little bit bette r. Giving Back Students at Babylon Elementary School learned about where their food donations go and how they can help their neighbors in need this holiday season thanks to a special visit on November 23rd from Madeline Quintyne, the Town of Babylon’s Commissioner of the Department of Human Services. At Babylon Elementary

School, each month has a different kindness theme and November’s theme is tied to giving, both at school and in the larger Babylon community. “In order to connect the themes of student donations, giving and community, we invited representatives from the Babylon Food Pantry here to speak to the students and teach them a little

Joining the Fight about how food pantries work and what happens after they make a food donation,” said Babylon Elementary School Principal Jessica Kemler. Students at Babylon Elementary School collected food throughout November to make baskets for Babylon families in need. All the extra donations were sent to the Babylon Food Pantry.

West Babylon Senior High School joined the global community by recognizing and supporting World AIDS Day on December 1st. Students took to the auditorium stage for dramatic dance performances, skits, musical numbers, poetry readings and video presentations to join the movement to fight HIV/ AIDS across the world. Kicking off the assembly was a candle-lighting ceremony featuring four candles that symbolized the eradication of HIVrelated deaths and discrimination, the support of those infected by HIV,

strength as a community to fight the disease and equal opportunities for those infected. Thirtyfour plus signs, each one representing 1 million people with HIV/AIDS, were randomly placed under the auditorium chairs and students held them up to symbolize how they are working to get the number to zero. Throughout the assembly, organized by West Babylon Senior High School counselor Brianne Hyer and physical education teacher Katie Dorsey, students performed skits, showed their videos, recited poetry and

reiterated facts and myths about the disease. “What we have accomplished together has made a difference already,” Dorsey and Hyer said. “If we made this much progress in one year, think about what we can do in three.” With more than 34 million people around the world affected by the disease, World AIDS Day is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.
