Random Acts of Kindness
A
s part of its ongoing character education, students at Woods Road Elementary School in the North Babylon district performed random acts of kindness in November. In a culminating activity, each grade level created its own chain comprised of descriptions of each student’s kind act, and the chain was strung around the school. The activity taught students the importance of empathy and compassion.

My Little Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. From when I was a child, there was something about the twinkling lights, the anticipation of a first snowfall, and of course the presents under the tree that evoked just a bit of… magic, really. All these years later, some of the mystery may be gone, but the sentiment remains the same. As this particular holiday season approached, it was difficult not to let some of the melancholy feelings seep in. This has been a year of multiple losses and sadness for my family, and somehow the thought of “celebrating” seemed wrong and, well, downright impossible. How to carry on traditions when so
much has changed… For me, even the prospect of decorating, a task I had always looked forward to with great enthusiasm, had lost some of its luster. Was it appropriate? Was it worth going through all the trouble of digging out boxes, climbing stepladders and assembling a tree when my heart wasn’t truly in it? I didn’t know. As the weeks passed and Thanksgiving came and went, I needed to make a decision; and so, I reached a compromise of sorts. Having recently had the privilege to inherit some of my grandparents’ more prized Christmas decorations – including several gorgeous, hand-painted ceramic figurines made by my grandmother – I decided it would only be right to display them.
And so, I set out to find that happy medium, of honoring all the wonderful memories I had compiled from years past – but not going overboard. I chose to keep it simple… white lights in the windows, greenery outside, and special emphasis on all those holiday tokens I had acquired from Grandma and Grandpa’s house. There will be plenty of years to go all out, to deck the halls from top to bottom with flashy colored lights and six-foot trees and tinsel and holly galore. But not this year. This year, I choose to focus on family – on those who are no longer with us, and on those we are still so lucky to be celebrating with. Here’s to remembering what’s most important at this time of year, and always.

The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays. The film was shown at the Southampton High School where a large crowd gathered for the opportunity to watch the film and to listen to some behind the scenes stories from “The Karate Kid” himself. Macchio, who donated his time to be there, said it was a wonderful feeling to stand in the back of the theater and hear the audience cheering and applauding for his character, Daniel LaRusso, throughout the film. Macchio told Victoria that he was happy to
be there to support the Wildlife Rescue Center and the incredible people who do “the tireless work”. He also told Victoria that his favorite behind the scenes memories were the ones with Pat Morita who played Mr. Miyagi. Adding, “those scenes were just magical and they have stood the test of time”. Victoria said, “it was an honor to be there with Mr. Macchio” to help support the Center which is eastern Long Island’s only wildlife hospital. She said she hopes that events like these will help to bring more awareness to all the amazing work they do. Victoria plans
to team up with them in the near future to bring an educational program to schools on Long Island where students will have an opportunity to see first hand some of Long Island’s incredible wildlife and to hear what’s being done to protect and care for them. year, when everyone wants to be able to celebrate the holidays as best they can, during a time when gratitude is so crucial to finding everyday happiness. The food items contributed by classrooms throughout the school will go to SSCM’s Parish Outreach Program in Deer Park. Local parishes and their volunteers are the lifeblood of parish social

Signing On As a result of their unwavering commitment both in the classroom and on the athletic field, four Babylon Junior-Senior High School seniors were recently selected to continue their athletic journeys at some of the nation’s premier schools this fall. In recognition of this honor, the seniors were joined by proud family members, district administrators and staff members as they put pen
to paper and signed letters of intent this November, whereby committing themselves to play collegelevel sports. “These young men and women are wonderful examples of today’s students who can effectively balance their academic studies while pursuing their athletic talents at a collegiate level,” said Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “We are very proud of these fine
young people representing Babylon High School.” Amongst those students who recently made their college commitments were Montana Craft (LIU Post/lacrosse), Gwendolyn Donaldson (SUNY Oneonta/softball), Kenneth Gordon (Flagler College/baseball) and Shaun Kaminski (SUNY Old Westbury/baseball).
