This year has been moving fast and it’s that time of year for the Stacks Auto Food Drive. We work with North Babylon Lions Club and St. Paul’s Church to help the families in our community. We will be doing our food drive from October through December. Please drop off anything you can at 745 Deer Park Ave. in North Babylon. If everyone drops off just one can of food this will make a huge difference for families that are in need. Together we will be helping our community. Stacks will take one dollar from every oil change and donate it toward food for the St. Paul’s Pantry.

My Buddy Buddy the Betta first entered my life on February 16th, 2015 as a “half-birthday” present to myself, with fingers crossed that this particular foray into the world of pet ownership would fare better than, say, the two carnival goldfish I had adopted the year prior. Little did I know that this little guy – my beautiful, turquoise, delta-finned Buddy – would become exactly that… a friend, a companion, an adopted member of the family, over the next 21 months. Through nearly two years of my life, from holiday gatherings to cozy weekends spent at home, just the two of us, Buddy was a constant. I’m not sure at what point I began to view him as so much more than a pet; but that he was. They say all animals have distinct personalities and characteristics, and Buddy was certainly no exception. Day after day, our routine became such that I swore he recognized me, greeted me, anxiously awaited my arrival home from work. Meal times were met with exuberant fin-waving and flitting to and fro, and the
occasional “betta kisses” on the tip of my finger should I venture too close to the water. Bath times resulted in sulking in the corner, burrowing behind his favorite plant and being downright obstinate when it came time to transfer from his larger, luxurious suite of a tank to his tiny “starter” bowl. Those I told about Buddy initially reacted with skepticism that a mere fish could actually possess almost humanlike qualities. That was, until they met him. It was impossible not to be charmed by this tiny fish with the big fins and the even bigger personality. And boy did he love the attention! It was about six months in that I worked Buddy into my “In Step” column as a “guest columnist,” taking on the role of my spokesfish and taking over the masthead with his “In Swim” moniker. The tremendous feedback I received from readers, the majority of whom were complete strangers, was overwhelming, with some even suggesting the makings of a future children’s book series.
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Milestones came and went, from his widely celebrated 1st Betta Birthday, to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, summer barbeques and everything in between, with Buddy often joining my company in his tiny bowl on the dining room table or setting up shop on the coffee table in front of the television. A better life could not a betta have. Sadly, my little Buddy passed on to fishy heaven just last week. He was a fighter up until the very end, and it was truly devastating to see him go. All pets are irreplaceable, to be sure; but my Buddy holds an extremely special place in my heart, and always will. Thank you to everyone who frequently wrote in to inquire about his wellbeing and for all the support of his guest columns. In this way, he has become somewhat immortalized in print. Life won’t be the same without ya Buddy. Forever my little finned friend… Love, your Human

Onward & Upward Saint Cyril and Methodius School’s Joseph Traverso was the 2016 graduation “Class Speaker” and is currently enjoying his freshman year at St. Anthony’s H.S. in Huntington. Reminiscing over his time at SSCM from when he stepped through the doors of the school for his first day of Pre-K ten years ago, Joseph
reflected upon how SSCM had prepared him, since day one, for the exciting challenges ahead at St. Anthony’s. In Joseph’s own words, “SSCM’s teachers have taught me life skills I will never forget...even sacrificing their own afterschool time to help us prepare for our high school entrance exams.” Among an impressive
list of accomplishments, Joseph was recognized during SSCM graduation, for excellence in science. He received awards for Altar Service and participating in School Band. He was the recipient of the Monsignor Rooney scholarship, a Parents Association scholarship, SSCM’s Senior Club scholarship and was the
winner of the SSCM 2016 Cyrilian Award. While exceeding academic expectations throughout his time at SSCM, Joseph simultaneously poured himself into a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including Honor Band, Children’s Choir, Altar Service, Breakfast with Santa volunteers,
holding leading roles in the school’s Drama Club and Shakespeare Festival performances and competing in SSCM’s Cross Country Team. A model student all around, Joseph’s academic history to date proves his formula for success to be Science + Shakespeare + Service + SSCM.

Ever grateful for his days at SSCM, Peter is now attending St. John the Baptist High School and we wish him every blessing for continued success!

The nationwide pool of Semi-Finalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT®), which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants. Dominick is among academically talented high school seniors across the country who have the opportunity to continue
in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships to be awarded next spring and valued at nearly $33 million. In addition to academic excellence, Semi-Finalists are judged on participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities and Principal Recommendations, as well as employment and honors and awards received.
