In recognition of Veterans Day every year, members of the West Babylon Union Free School District come together to demonstrate their appreciation for the brave men and women who have risked their lives to protect American freedoms. Throughout the month of November, students took part in a myriad of activities that paid homage to veterans. Elementary students of Tooker Avenue, Forest Avenue, South Bay and JFK elementary schools wrote letters of thanks to the hardworking troops overseas and the veterans who have served our country. Some letters were sent to a base in Afghanistan, while others were sent to veterans who attend the local American Legion Hall in West
Babylon or reside in the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook. Other district schools, including the junior high and Santapogue Elementary, displayed images of veterans throughout their hallways, including family members of former students, faculty and staff who served or are currently serving in the armed forces. “They make such big sacrifices so that we can be free, like being away from their families for long periods of time, so we need to honor those sacrifices,” said sixthgrader Michael Linder. Michael and his brothers, seventh-grader Derek and sixth-grader Adam, were recently surprised in school when their father John Linder of the U.S. Air Force returned home after

Under the supervision of teachers Jim Egbert, Lynette Jabour and Christina Ludwig, 10thgrade honors English classes at West Babylon Senior High School have compiled a book of interviews that they’ve gathered from the veterans in their lives. The compilations created through this project, initiated by Mr. Egbert, are printed every year and distributed to various veteran groups, such as the American Legion, and are shared with presentday soldiers. Recognizing Heroes
Tis’ the season for outdoing ourselves – in every way… for feasting for what seems like days on end, for running up the credit cards on gifts for all our friends and loved ones – and occasionally ourselves – for “decking the halls” with extravagant garlands and twinkling lights and precious ornaments… There are many who detest this time of year, for precisely these reasons. But I love it.
Tis’ the season to be jolly, right? And why not … we spend enough of our days consumed by outside issues beyond our control. We deserve this brief reprieve from the madness, don’t we? No time like the present to savor the moment and enjoy all of life’s blessings. And, for me, this holiday season will be a year of firsts: First Christmas in my new apartment. First opportunity to decorate and put up my very own tree. First chance to perhaps host a gathering
of my own and – dare I even say it – cook?!? Perhaps not. We wouldn’t want to be too ambitious! But still, the season will be exciting. It is a time for establishing new traditions and carrying on old ones. For reconnecting with those we have lost touch with over the last year. For spending quality time with those who mean the most. It is time, time we cannot get enough of. However you choose to spend it, may you enjoy it wholeheartedly.

These spills were mainly a result of home heating oil tanks that had broken loose during the storm. The New York State DEC deployed their fleet of trucks to help vacuum up the oil and pump out damaged tanks and basements. The EPA worked with the Town of Babylon’s Department of

Environmental Control on a joint program to recover and pump out oil tanks, drums and containers, as well as other household hazardous wastes, from Superstorm Sandy. Residents were encouraged to place such items at curbside to be picked up by the Town to be disposed of correctly. This highly effective program helped keep thousands of gallons of hazardous material out of our waste stream and waters.

Iconic scenes from the famous ’80s movieturned-Broadway musical unfolded on stage at Babylon Junior-Senior High School when the theater company presented “Footloose” to packed audiences this November. Between hit songs including “Almost Paradise” and “Footloose,” the cast of nearly 40 members entertained audiences of all ages with their well-rehearsed productions. The show follows teenager Ren McCormack (played by Logan Middleton) as he moves from Chicago to the small town of Beaumont. Ren’s displeasure for this sudden life change quickly intensifies when he learns that his love for rock ’n’ roll and dance will be shortchanged by Reverend Shaw’s (played by Devin Golder) ban on such things. During the two-act show, the Reverend’s daughter Ariel (played by Julia O’Handley), her mother Vi (played by Brooke Wexler) and other members of the cast educated the audience as to the history of the ban before collectively convincing the Reverend to reverse the sanction. In addition to their evening and matinee performances, the students staged a free show for the community’s senior citizens, prior to which attendees feasted on a delicious three-course pasta dinner served by the school’s Leo Club. Teacher Lisa Drance directed this year’s production, with musical direction provided by Charles Leech. For the first time in recent history, two students, Amanda Albert and Jayne Dittmeier, choreographed the show. Audiences were transported back in time with the help of the creative sets, designed by the stage crew with the help of Linda Napolitano, and distinctive lighting and sound, under the direction of Colleen Angerami.
