Back In Black By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Black Friday is nearly upon us once again. Can it really be one whole year since we all ventured into the void that is the morning after Thanksgiving to join the throngs searching for that special, magical bargain? Notice I said the morning after Thanksgiving, not the night of, not the day of, and certainly not the weeks leading up to… Black Friday festivities should be reserved for the day itself; that’s what makes it unique. Of course, we now have Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday and a host of other “specialty” days to

observe as well, each with its own nuances – but all come down to the same basic concept: saving money. In all honesty, there has been some argument as to whether these days actually bring the best bargains, with some contending that the last minute rush in the days leading up to Christmas Eve is really the best bet for cost cutting. And then there are those who, as we sit here today, have already shopped, wrapped and shipped all their presents before the turkey hits the table. It would be nice if we could all take a step back and view holiday shopping as the joyous task it was meant to be, rather

than as a chore, a checklist of tasks to be crossed off one by one. Gift giving is meant to be an expression of appreciation for those we love, a token of thoughtfulness… not a source of stress and aggravation. Lending A Voice Babylon Junior-Senior High School student actors took to the stage this November to perform in the Broadway hit comedy, Lend Me A Tenor before packed audiences. During the three-day run, the show told the tale of a famous tenor who was performing worldwide and

how those he encountered on one of his stops scrambled to protect his cloudy reputation. The students prepared for the debut for months, under the leadership of new director and BHS alumnus Derek Kinnear. On the evening before the show’s opening,

the school’s Leo Club, hosted its annual Dinner and Theater Event for community senior citizens. At the event, club members served a delicious tasty spaghetti dinner for attendees before escorting them to a complimentary showing of the production.

International Visitors Babylon Junior-Senior High School students had the chance to experience French language first hand when 12 students from the Versailles area of Paris visited the Babylon School District. During the visit, the French students participated in a meet-

and-greet, and shared a PowerPoint presentation on the life of the typical Parisian teenager, the structure of a school day as well as an explanation of how their government works with the school’s French and social studies classes. They also enjoyed a pizza lunch and shadowed

members of the French National Honor Society during two classes. The event was coordinated by French teacher Melissa Anderson and Jean Marc Emarot, moderator of the club Junior Association, 20 000 Liens Sur la Terre.

VETS DAY BREAKFAST - Last week, in honor of Veterans Day, first graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park lovingly whipped up a delicious French Toast breakfast for SSCM’s own resident Veteran, Father Dennis Suglia. Father Suglia served in the United States Marine Corp for four years before answering his calling to the vocation of priesthood. The students were thrilled to be able to do this for Father Suglia, who frequents SSCM classrooms and is always quick with a parable for the class. Father Suglia seemed quite moved by the youngsters’ gesture and together they prayed for all military personnel and their families.

Mercy Ball Set The Friends of Mercy Medical Center will hold their 78th Annual Mercy Ball on Saturday, December 6th, at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. More than 300 participants are expected. This year’s event celebrates Mercy continuing to shine with more than a Century of Compassionate Care to Mercy’s surrounding communities. The proceeds from the 78th Annual Mercy Ball will support Mercy Medical Center’s new Center for Hyperbaric Medicine & Wound Healing opening early 2015. The facility will offer comprehensive wound care services for

the treatment of chronic, non-healing and/or poorly healing wounds. These services will be delivered by physicians and staff specializing in wound healing and hyperbaric medicine. The Center for Hyperbaric Medicine & Wound Healing at Mercy will apply evidencebased clinical practices using sophisticated therapies, including the most advanced dressings and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, to help give patients back their best quality of life. “We are looking forward to a successful ball as we celebrate more than 100 years of quality health care to the community,” said Marc DiSciullo, MD,

President of the Friend of Mercy. The chairpersons for this year’s event are Mayor Francis X. Murray of Rockville Centre and Mrs. Gloria DiSciullo of Muttontown. Three major awards will be presented: Physicians of Mercy Medical Center, will receive the Theodore Roosevelt Award for Outstanding Service. The award is presented by the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council to an individual contributing to the development of Long Island’s community hospitals in the spirit of the renowned former president and Long Island resident’s lifelong

devotion to public service. Ron Steimel of Oceanside, executive vice president and chief administrative officer at St. Joseph Hospital, former chief operating officer/vice president of finance of Mercy Medical Center and a Friend of Mercy, will receive the Sister Mary Nadine Casey, CIJ Award that honors a member of the Mercy family who best personifies the values of Mercy Medical Center and the Congregation of the Infant Jesus whose members founded the hospital in 1913. John Sullivan of Rockville Centre, founder of Jzanus Ltd., a consortium of healthcare

companies that provides a wide range of receivable and consulting services to the New York healthcare industry and a Friend of Mercy, will receive the Bishop John R. McGann Lifetime Achievement Award, which is presented to a distinguished individual dedicated to volunteering time and effort in support of the Friends of Mercy. One of the annual traditions at the Ball is the Mercy Honor Guard, comprised of high school students who escort the Grand March of dignitaries into the ballroom preceded by a Color Guard from the United State Marine Corps. On November 10th, Brendan McCurdy and Bob Draffin, Directors, Friends of Bradstock, presented a check in the amount of $12,000 to Kevin Spellman, Board President, Camp PaQua-Tuck, at the camp’s board meeting. With this check, Bradstock has raised a total of over $42,000 for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in the past four years. News 12 Long Island recently announced that award-winning sportscaster Bob Wolff has been recognized by Guinness World Records for having the “longest career as a sportscaster and broadcaster.” Currently enjoying his 75th year in broadcasting, with more than 68 of those in television, Wolff is still going strong. Guinness World Records presented Wolff with the 75 year certificate at the New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden this past Wednesday. Patrick Dolan, President, News 12 Networks and News 12 Long Island News Director, noted: “For more than 28 years, we’ve been thrilled and honored to count Bob Wolff as a member of the News 12 family. Bob is more than a sportscaster - he’s a broadcast legend. His genius and relentless work ethic have been an inspiration for scores of young sport professionals

We couldn’t be happier to be a part of his legacy.” “This has been a wonderful journey and I’m still enjoying every moment”, said Bob Wolff. “I’ve been privileged to work with some of the best professionals in the business and for that I am truly grateful. I feel enormously lucky that I have been a professional sports broadcaster in nine decades, beginning on CBS in 1939, providing play-by-play of some of the most memorable games in sports history. To be honored at Madison Square Garden, where I’ve called so many memorable events, and made so many friends, is something I’ll always cherish, and I look forward to continuing to cover sports well into the future.” Wolff began his professional career in 1939 working for WDNC-CBS while a freshman at Duke University in Durham, NC. graduate became a sports television pioneer in 1946 when he joined DuMont Network’s WTTG-TV as the first telecaster in Washington, D.C. He was also the first basketball team telecaster in history, calling play-by-play for the Red Auerbach-coached Washington Capitols in their inaugural 19461947 season. During his 15 years in Washington, D.C., Wolff became a local broadcasting legend. He was the television voice of the Washington Senators beginning in 1947 and, in addition to calling games, he also handled the team’s pre-game and post-game TV and radio shows. Beginning in 1954, he began a remarkable 36-year television run as MSG play-by-play broadcaster where he held the record for telecasting more MSG events than any other sportscaster, including long-running tenures as the TV voice of the New York Knicks, the Rangers, numerous

college basketball teams, the National Invitation Tournament, the Millrose Games, Virginia Slims Tennis, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and the National Horse Show. He’s also been the national play-by-play voice for NBC, ABC and the Mutual Broadcasting System’s “Game of the Week” in baseball and college football, and the local television play caller for eight pro teams in five sports. On the college scene, he was a popular play caller for Maryland, Navy and St. John’s. Wolff has been behind the microphone for many sporting firsts. In 1956, he was selected to cover Mutual Broadcasting System’s broadcast of the 1956 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers. He had a sportscasting first in Game 5 when he called Don Larsen’s perfect game – the only one in World Series history. He also called the Baltimore Colts 1958 victory over the New York Giants at Yankee Stadium in the first overtime NFL Championship that has been called “the greatest game ever played.” And in 1960, Wolff teamed with Canadian TV hockey great Foster Hewitt to call television’s first-ever payper-view game, Toronto against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. In 1961, Wolff followed the Senators to Minnesota to become the play-by-play voice of the Minnesota Twins and in 1962, he was selected to be the play-by-play telecaster on NBC’s Baseball Game of the Week. In 2003, he became the first person to capture the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association’s (NSSA) Triple Crown of awards. Wolff was inducted into the NSSA Hall of Fame and was also selected as New York State Sportscaster of the Year for the sixth time and received the national Powerade Award for Best Sportscast for the “Bob Wolff Baseball Scrapbook” show on the

MSG Network. That same year, he was also inducted into the Madison Square Garden Walk of Fame. In 1995, he was honored with baseball’s prestigious Ford C. Frick Award for major contributions to baseball and was inducted into the broadcast wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In July 2008, he was voted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame with the Curt Gowdy Award, joining Curt as the only two sportscasters to be in both the basketball and the baseball halls. Wolff has also been honored by selection to the Hall of Fame of his collegiate fraternity- Sigma Nu. A New York native, Wolff resides in Rockland County, NY, with his wife Jane. They have two sons and a daughter. The “Wolffpack” now includes nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
