The program, which is open to all students, runs once a week and features of number of fun activities rooted in walking. Previously, members have

participated in a scavenger hunt and obstacle course, among others. Using pedometers, students track and log the number of steps they take during the activities and are rewarded when they achieve different benchmarks. After a mile walkers names are read over the loud speaker, after five their names are listed

As a kick off to the first meeting, students had the chance to guess how many steps it would take to walk a mile. Past Peak By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well there it is. I hope you enjoyed autumn. Did you savor the glorious foliage on your drive to work? Did you pick enough apples and pumpkins to last you through your winter hibernation? Did you take in the requisite corn mazes and haunted houses and eat far too much Halloween candy in the process? Like it or not, once those leaves begin to brown and flutter to the ground en masse, autumn is officially past its peak. Forecasters are already beginning

to utter that dreaded four-letter word as the temperatures drop each evening. Heck, even some retailers seem to have hit fast forward, starting their “Black Friday” sales the day after Halloween this year. Um… did we miss something? As far as I’m concerned, “winter” is still a few weeks out. There’s still plenty of turkey and trimmings to be enjoyed, leaf piles to jump into and mum plants to admire. The shopping and decorating and wrapping and cooking can wait a bit. There will be plenty of time for all that over the next

month or so. And then… well, then it’s just plain old winter. Slow down. Savor. Repeat for next season. It’s not that difficult. Perhaps if everyone wasn’t in such a great rush, there would be more time to accomplish things. Mindset is everything. In the meantime, enjoy the cool, crisp autumn air as you rake your leaves and plan the Thanksgiving menu for next week. Be thankful we have four seasons to enjoy, and be thankful for all those whom you are blessed to share them with.

Promoting Positive Behavior Babylon

Memorial Grade School students and staff members marked this year’s Anti-Bullying Month through a series of activities and an awareness campaign. Students documented their thoughts on what individuals could do to prevent bullying on slips of paper, which were used to make a large chain to block out bullying in the main hallway and shared over the loudspeaker each day.

Campaign coordinator and school guidance counselor Francesca Johnson also spoke about the topic during lunch periods and encouraged the students to continue to stand up against bullying. Students who were “caught” displaying positive behaviors were recognized with “bully buster” and “recess buddy” certificates.

Seven students from local elementary and middle schools were selected as winners of the contest, which focused on celebrating our veterans. Vedder Honors Vets In honor of Veterans Day, students at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School in the North Babylon School District celebrated local war heroes with patriotic poems and choral performances. Following a raising of the American flag, the trumpeting of Taps

by high schooler Kayla Rivera and a performance of the Star Spangled Banner by high school student Giovanna Guerrero, veterans were serenaded with songs by Vedder’s third-, fourthand fifth-graders. During the celebration, children also recited poems about the significance of
