students had to properly budget their money to purchase parts for their rockets and then write out checks for each purchase. They worked on the design and engineering portion of the project with the goal of creating a rocket that will launch straight up in the air under pressure. The project was part of a solar system unit that focused on the topics of gravity, rocketry and the space race. Students also illustrated “mission patches” that symbolize each member of their groups, just like real astronauts, to improve their teamwork and problem solving skills.

Developing Skills Members of the Babylon Junior-Senior High School Writers’ Club recently participated in the Young Artists and Writers Project. The mentoring program is sponsored by Stony Brook Southampton’s MFA in Creative Writing and Literature and

Southampton Arts. In October, club members worked with writing artist Jack Kelly to develop horror stories in the spirit of Halloween. Mr. Kelly used the students’ stories to create fun and engaging writing prompts during the workshop.

These prompts allowed students to explore different ideas and give suggestions to their peers. Veterans Awareness Town of Babylon Councilmembers Jackie Gordon and Tom Donnelly recently joined with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre and members

Science and Health teacher, Mr. Senatore, teaches the ins and outs of the sciences that ground us and also has his students looking to the Heavens for more clues into the Universe that surrounds us. Sixth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School recently enjoyed some hands on time, seeing Astronomy in action, through the school’s highpowered telescope.

During their Solar Observation day, students were able to view the sun, first-hand, through a filtered lens and learn about the Sun’s corona, solar flares, view different kinds of sun spots and discuss the layers of the sun among other solar facts. With the followup Lunar Observation that Mr. Senatore organized, students had an opportunity to gather

in the early evening and enjoy some time viewing other celestial bodies, as well. Assembling at twilight, students could see the moon and stars through the high-powered lens and see the features of the moon up close and personal. This fed nicely into the solar system projects the students had been working on and rounded out the classroom learning in a more tangible way.

March 21 - April 20 As the air chills and we brace ourselves for earlier sunsets, students at Saints Cyril and Methodius School are hitting the books hard and enjoying every minute of the group activities and hands-on projects that bolster the core curriculum skills developed in the classroom. First graders learned all about owls and then created their own edible ones, taking their math lessons on geometric shapes to a level that was both concrete and a ton of fun. Taking another lesson from nature, first graders

also made acorn projects and decided they enjoyed them as much as their squirrel friends did. It is a thing of beauty to witness a room full of 6 year olds find their inner peace as they round out each day together by saying a decade of the Rosary and adding their own special intentions. In the reading realm, second graders worked cooperatively while honing their reading skills and discussing The Ugly Vegetable in teams. Meanwhile, fifth graders had the opportunity to

select a Newbury Medal award-winning book, published from 1922 to the present and write a compelling essay, comparing and contrasting the main character, and his or her decisions, to their own life and decisions. In the eighth grade classroom, Literature Circles were in full swing, with student teams working together to create and present their group projects on the books they read and sharing each of their views on the characters’ choices, often under hot debate!

Top Priority In an effort to meet the district’s goal of enhancing professional collaboration within and across grade levels, Babylon School District administrators, faculty and staff engaged in a variety of workshops, meetings and breakout sessions during Superintendent’s Conference Day on November 3rd. At the elementary and grade school level, topics included the sharing and discussion of student writing, exploring how to better address and support mathematical fluencies and integrating technology into daily classroom instruction. Members of both the elementary and grade school Response to Intervention teams met with other K-6 teachers to share resources, align school RTI plans and

discuss and share how technology can be used to streamline and advance the referral process. “The feedback from teachers regarding the day was very positive as everybody appreciated the opportunity to meet and collaborate with colleagues from different grades and buildings,” said Daniel D’Amico, the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. At the junior-senior high school, teachers met and worked with department colleagues on a host of tasks including the development of new curriculum, the review of assessments and the exploration of new resources. “The day of professional adult learning was an engaging experience for all involved,” said

Dinner and a Show Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “Our staff is truly a dedicated group of professionals, always advancing in ways in which we can improve instruction and learning.” Departments also traveled off campus to various workshops. Members of the science department met at Brookhaven National Laboratory, while the music department attended the Music Education Symposium Day. The physical education department attended the Suffolk County Zone Conference at Sachem North High School and select members of the Practical Arts department attended the L.I. STEM Hub Professional Development Day at the Cradle of Aviation Museum.

and a show on November 5th. During the event, Leo Club members served beverages, salads, baked

ziti and an array of desserts to attendees before Drama Club members performed a production of Clifford Odets’ “The Big Knife.”
