Back in the Spotlight This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a flood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t

sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood floor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms ﬂailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very first dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

The media distractions have been unbearable, and arguably quite one-sided in most of their coverage. The other candidate is a lawyer and a lifetime politician, who beat Bernie Sanders and became the first woman Democratic nominee. The tone of this campaign has been quite intense throughout the primaries, the conventions and the three debates. In many ways, the country has never been more divided. You have Republican Donald J. Trump, who wants to “Drain the Swamp” of Washington D.C. and rebuild our country.

Hundreds of law enforcement experts from across the nation gathered at the Upsky Long Island Hotel in Hauppauge on Thursday, October 20th, for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s 10th annual Gang Intelligence Seminar. Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco organizes the event each year in conjunction with the Middle Atlantic-Great Lakes Organized Crime Law Enforcement Network. The County Sheriff has made partnering with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies a priority of his Administration and he says the Annual Gang Intelligence Seminar gives officials the opportunity to share information on current trends and improve collaboration. Highlights of this year’s event focused on security in the Brentwood School District in the wake of the high profile murders of two students, and others, by suspected gang members, as well as the scope of the gang problem in Long Island’s suburbs.

Night of Recognitions

Sora, Rebecca Sposito and Michael Valenti were selected to attend the Empire Girls and Empire Boys State program from June 26th to July 2nd at SUNY Brockport and SUNY Morrisville. The program is a handson, weeklong educational workshop, whose goal is to help students develop leadership and

The October 17th Babylon Board of Education Business Meeting was full of recognitions for both staff and students. The night began with the recognition of the current Babylon Junior-Senior High School students who were named Advanced Placement Scholars. These students were commended for their academic dedication and presented with commemorative certificates. AP Scholar awards are bestowed upon students by the College Board based on the number of AP exams taken and the

scores they received on the tests. Babylon Junior-Senior High School football coach Rick Punzone was celebrated for recently being named a New York Jets High School Coach of the Week by Chase. Under his leadership, the team has won five Long Island and 12 Suffolk County championships, all within the past 20 years. The team recently defeated the Center Moriches Red Devils at homecoming with a final score of 42-6. To finish up the evening’s recognitions, the board of

education members were recognized for their selfless volunteer work toward the community and numerous hours given to ensure that students are getting the best education possible. The representatives were given many tokens of appreciation throughout the night, but perhaps the most memorable was Babylon Memorial Grade School’s gift of red superhero capes and a presentation portraying various members of the Babylon school community as superheroes.

A rainy day didn’t dampen the spirit of the West Babylon community as West Babylon School District celebrated its homecoming on October 22nd. Starting with a pep rally the night before, students showed off their school spirit with dance and cheer performances. Even though the floats didn’t get to parade around the

community due to the weather, all the hard work of the classes was still recognized as the floats parked in the West Babylon Senior High School lot for all to see on Monday morning. For the big game, the West Babylon Eagles took on the East Islip Redmen. Despite their best efforts and a fourthquarter touchdown, the
