Third-graders in Heather Paganica’s class at Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District had fun learning with pumpkins. After picking out their orange gourd at the PTAsponsored pumpkin patch, the students engaged in different science and math lessons. They observed their pumpkins and wrote their characteristics on a data sheet. Next, they measured the circumference and height of their fall festive fruit and recorded any unique markings they found. Finally, the students drew a picture of their pumpkins and shared their findings with one another.

Despite the less than favorable weather in the morning and early afternoon, the clouds began to clear for Babylon as the community displayed their school spirit and support for Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s Panthers football team at the homecoming celebration on October 14th. To begin the day’s festivities, Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi welcomed various members of the Babylon community to the first Distinguished Alumni Induction Ceremony held in the lobby of Rowe Hall. The following individuals were met with praise for their successes and accomplishments since graduating from Babylon Junior-Senior High School. This year’s inductees included Ernest Busch (’77, posthumously), Rick Klein (’94), Jane Lappin
(’72), Thomas Melito (’70), Robert Norman (’70) and Ralph Scordino (’67). “It is my distinct pleasure to recognize these individuals as Distinguished Alumni of the Babylon School District,” said Mrs. Rozzi. “Through their legacy of success, our current students are shown that results stemming from hard work and unyielding support of the community go a long way toward achieving one’s goals.” Prior to the highly anticipated football game against Center Moriches High School, the streets of Montauk Highway were lined with community members showing their support for the home team. The air was filled with the sweet sounds of the Babylon Junior-Senior High School band, and the floats decorated with a Disney theme were on full display for all to witness.

Going into halftime of the football game, the Panthers displayed an incredible feat of athleticism as they held Center Moriches High School by a score of 40-14. By the end of the fourth quarter, Babylon captured a win for the Panthers with a score of 46-14. During the halftime celebrations, Mrs. Rozzi once again introduced this year’s Distinguished Alumni, the sophomore class was declared winner of the best float contest for their excellent interpretation of “The Little Mermaid” and students Sean Baudille and Kyra Pitagno were named homecoming king and queen, respectively. The Simple Things As we usher in November, we tend to take stock of the year as a whole - where it stands, those goals we had intended to achieve along the way, and how the two correlate. Life is a constant evaluation in that way. While the month may be centered around the beginning of the holiday season, the concept of Thanksgiving is one that can be applied throughout the year. Perhaps this is why it is one of my least favorite holidays, simply for the fact that it seems short-sighted to designate one particular day to “be thankful.” What about the other 364? It shouldn’t take a turkey dinner and wallto-wall football games to gain that needed perspective. Before the commercialism of the “season of giving” took over, it was simply an opportunity to spend time
with family and friends, to gather over food and reminisce, and to make new memories along the way. Looking through old photo albums, the one thing that resonates through the years is the sense of togetherness that always existed; so strong you can practically see it reverberating off the pages. This is a feeling that one can only hope to recapture with each passing year. All the shopping, the cooking, the cleaning, the decorating, the wrapping… what is it for, if not that moment when everyone comes together to enjoy one another’s company. It’s the little things that matter - a special greeting card with a thoughtful inscription, remembering someone’s favorite type of dessert, a lovingly wrapped gift topped with a beautiful bow. The rest, as they say, is

merely window dressing. While the year may be drawing to a close, there is still plenty of time to refocus on those goals we may have allowed to slip through the cracks. Days and months and years are but markers of time; the moment itself is what matters. The only deadlines we should pay mind to are those we set for ourselves. The plan is always evolving, and so, too, must we. Don’t think of it as two months left to achieve a particular task; or two months left until the clock resets and we can put 2017 behind us for good - neither approach serves us today, now. November Charity of the Month:
MAUREEN’S HAVEN!
Maureen’s Haven is a local organization that helps homeless men and women around Long Island. This program brings a variety of organizations and houses of worship together to help meet the needs of the homeless during the cold winter months, which is known as their Emergency Shelter Program, starting on November 1st and running through March 1st.
The host facilities and supporting organizations provide not just a place for the homeless to sleep, but a nutritious dinner, breakfast and a packed meal to go. They provide support by embracing the values of human dignity, respect, service, compassion, teamwork, diversity and love. Recognizing the need for consistent support and services for the homeless in the region, Maureen’s Haven opened a day center in Riverhead to provide respite from the cold and year-round services for this vulnerable and growing population. The day center is the first of its kind in Suffolk County. A variety of programs are offered throughout the year. In addition to meeting their immediate needs, Maureen’s Haven strives to place individuals in supportive housing, which provides consistent shelter and case management. Over the past three years, Maureen’s Haven has placed over 30 individuals in housing, provided counseling and assistance with job search and placement, and offered
a continuum of care that has helped individuals in rebuilding their lives. After meeting recently with Maryann, the Executive Director of this wonderfully compassionate organization, and taking a tour of their day center, I came away with a much better understanding of who they are and what they do. The warm sincerity I felt while hearing her speak about the heart of this organization and experiencing what it’s like to be at their day center was quite emotional and aweinspiring. Maureen’s Haven is currently in need of various donations and volunteers. As far as donations, they need the following: latex gloves, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, coffee/tea keurig pods, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and of course monetary donations. They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room, building shelves in the donation room, assisting with office work duties and assisting with cleaning up the day center. They also need men to serve as overnight staff to watch over the homeless on Monday nights at Aquebogue’s Our Redeemer Church. On September 24th, Kevin Neumann, a Life Scout from Troop 399, North Babylon, completed his Eagle Project, which was to collect 1500 lbs. of food for the St. Paul’s Food Pantry. With help from members of his troop and the North Babylon community, he far surpassed his original goal and collected almost 2 tons (3900 lbs) of food! Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer was on site and thanked Kevin for his hard work. Only a small fraction of boys who join scouting move forward to attain Eagle Scout status. However, the benefits from doing so are impressive. According to a study conducted by Baylor University, Eagle Scouts are more likely than men who have never been in scouting to have higher

I’m sure you’ve heard that water is good for you, but why is that? What does it do for us? That’s what I want to share with you... Water makes up the majority of our weight. The average adult body is made up of 50%-65% water. Our bodies can’t store this water, so we need to replenish it frequently. Before, when I wasn’t at my healthiest, I didn’t drink water often. I drank iced tea, lots of coffee and other juices. I always said to myself - the beverages I am drinking are made with water, that’s good enough. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I wasn’t giving my body nearly enough fresh, clean water. Now, you might ask yourself - well how much water do I need? Ideally, 64 ounces daily is a good goal. That’s eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, a simple habit of health. I have a 32-ounce water bottle that I fill three times a day. If you’re overweight, live in a hot
climate or are intensely active, you may need to drink more than that. Some individuals should not drastically increase or decrease water intake, as it can affect certain types of medication, its effectiveness and levels in the body. Be sure to talk with you health care provider for advice on your specific needs. Are You Prepared to Cast Your Ballot on Election Day? Polls in Suffolk County are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Election Day, November 7th. Many voters are unprepared when they arrive at the polls, unaware of what offices are on the ballot, what each candidate stands for, and unfamiliar with state or local propositions on the back of the ballot. Yes, the ballot is frequently confusing and the print can be quite small (NYS election law requires a one-page ballot; lobby your state Senator and Assembly member if you think this merits review). The old lever machines are gone - there was no way to verify whether they were accurately recording each vote - and, for the past few years, voters have been using optical scanners, which are verifiable via a paper trail. The Suffolk County ballot will include candidates for judges, district attorney and sheriff. All 18 Suffolk County Legislature seats are on the ballot as well. Locally, there are elections for various town offices. Do your research and come to the polls prepared. Watch for news of candidate forums in your community and articles in your local newspaper or visit www.Vote411.org. To confirm that you are registered to vote and confirm your polling place, visit www.SuffolkVotes.com, the website of the Suffolk County Board of Elections. The League of Women Voters of New York State has published a Voter Guide Part II: Ballot Proposals, which may help you evaluate the three proposals that will be on the November 2017 ballot. This trifold can be found on the LWVNYS website www.LWVNY.org/Advocacy/
Vote/2017/Voters-Guide_2_2017.pdf and may be printed out. Please read it before heading to the polls. To help you, the three proposals are summarized below: The first proposal: “Shall there be a convention to revise the Constitution and amend the same?” is offered by law every 20 years to the electorate. If the vote is negative, there will be no convention. If the majority vote yes, there will be a convention in 2019 to consider amendments to the New York State Constitution. In November 2018, delegates will be elected by the voters - three from each state senatorial district and 15 at large. The amendments that are adopted by a majority of the delegates will be submitted to the voters for their approval at least six weeks after the convention adjourns. Proponents of the convention hope that it will affect election voting and ethics reform, changes that have been proposed to the legislature but never passed. Other areas for improvement are judicial reform, environmental issues, and health care and women’s issues. Opponents of the proposal are concerned that it may lead to a complete overhaul of the state constitution, removing or revising protections of state pensions and collective bargaining, the Adirondack Forest Preserve and school funding. The second proposal: “Allowing the complete or partial forfeiture of a public officer’s pension if he or she is convicted of a certain type of felony” would allow a court to reduce or revoke the pension of a public officer who is convicted of a felony that has a direct and actual relationship to the performance of the officer’s duties. In reaching this determination, the court must consider
the seriousness of the crime and whether the forfeiture would result in undue hardship to dependent children. If approved, the amendment will apply only to crimes committed on or after January 1st, 2018, because the New York Constitution now provides that the benefits of a public pension or retirement system cannot be reduced or impaired. The third proposal: “Authorizing the use of forest preserve land for specific purposes” would create a land account with up to 250 acres for use by towns, villages and counties that have no viable alternative to using forest preserve land to address specific public health and safety concerns. Another 250 acres will be added to the forest preserve as a substitute for the land removed. The proposed article would allow counties and townships of certain regions to conduct repairs on road and bridges and allow for the installation of new bike paths, broadband internet and water well infrastructure. Although the Adirondack Forest Preserve is protected by the “Forever Wild” clause of the constitution, local governments, elected officials and the NYS DEC all support this amendment, feeling it is necessary for the safety of residents and to ensure that quality of life is maintained. It was a weekend full of festivities as West Babylon School District celebrated its homecoming on October 7th. Starting with a pep rally at West Babylon Senior High School on October 6th and ending with a homecoming dance on the evening of October 7th, the district and community came together to show their West Babylon pride. The homecoming parade kicked off the events on Saturday, beginning in the business sector of Little East Neck Road and marching down to West Babylon Junior High
School’s turf field. The parade featured a class float done collectively as a school this year, as well as clubs and organizations, elementary school students and administrators, sports teams and members of the homecoming court. Prior to the game, senior athletes from the football and cheerleading teams, along with their parents, took to the field to be recognized by the crowd. The marching band performed “The StarSpangled Banner” and “God Bless America” before the Eagles took on the Kings Park Kingsmen. The

School Pride Shines Eagles scored a touchdown in the first minute of the game, giving them an early lead. West Babylon used that momentum and dominated for the rest of the game, defeating Kings Park 34-21. The halftime show featured performances by the marching band and varsity cheerleaders. Following the game, the homecoming dance welcomed more than 650 students. Baylee Napolitano and Marc Esposito were crowned the HIGH SPIRITS - The Babylon Junior-Senior High School Panthers football team homecoming queen and was in high spirits as they prepared to take on Center Moriches High School during king, respectively. The Babylon District is proud to announce that 33 Babylon Junior-Senior High School students have earned Advanced Placement Scholar awards from the College Board. These honorees include both current students and members of the Class of 2017. Of the 33 total students, 24 received the AP Scholar title for receiving a score of 3 or higher on three
or more AP Exams. Four students were given the title of AP Scholar with Honor, as they achieved an average score of at least 3.25 on all of their AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Additionally, five students were awarded the title of AP Scholar of Distinction, including current senior Jeffrey Kaji, as they achieved an average
score of at least 3.5 on all exams taken with scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. One graduate in the Class of 2017, Gabriella Albanese, received the high honor of National AP Scholar. This award is given to students who have earned a score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of those exams.

Headed to the Festival Based on their musical talents and academic successes, seven Babylon Junior-Senior High School students have been recognized as premier musicians and were invited to participate in this year’s New York State School Music Association All-State and All-County music festivals. Sydney Altbacker (Treble Choir) and Peter
Schubart (Cello) have been named All-State studentmusicians and were invited to participate in the 2017 NYSSMA All-State Conference to be held in Rochester, New York from November 30th-December 3rd. Choir), Ryan Marrone (Mixed Chorus), Keira Pitagno (Treble Choir), Peter Schubart (Cello) and Sophia Sherman (Mixed Chorus) were named AllCounty student-musicians and will perform at Hauppauge High School on Friday, November 17th, at 7:30 p.m. alongside other selected musicians.

Pink at Parliament As part of its recognition of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District designated
October 18th as Pink and Denim Day. Students and staff were encouraged to show their support for the cause by wearing jeans with prominent displays of pink,
the color synonymous with breast cancer awareness. The school raised more than $500 as a result of its fundraising efforts in support of the cause.
