Members of the public and the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) walked the Sunken Meadow State Park boardwalk on Thursday, October 6th to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity in maintaining physical and mental health. The walk coincided with Mental Health Awareness
Week. With the regional theme of being able to “Shine a Light” on mental health/substance abuse treatment and prevention, the LIHC called the event the Light the Path Walk. There is compelling research that physical activity improves mood and it has been shown to decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety.

This morning, I was hoping to see the sunrise. Not because I have never had the privilege of experiencing one, but because I thought it would be a fitting way to mark what would have been my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, an occasion we, as a family, are forced to bittersweetly celebrate in his absence. Somehow, I thought the golden rays welcoming a brand new day might make the sadness simply melt away. Unfortunately, when I awoke, it was not to the promising haze of dawn, but to an overcast sky brimming with rain clouds, seemingly ready to shower the land at any given moment. I suppose that was fitting in its own way. Realistically, the prospect
of “celebrating” any occasion following the passing of someone special is a fairly impossible task. Absent is the guest of honor, replaced by memories of days gone by and happier times. They say these things grow easier with time, but I’m not sure that is truly the case. Perhaps we just learn to adapt and deal with them differently... but the pain remains all the same. First holidays, especially, seem to take the biggest emotional toll on those loved ones left behind, as they attempt to pick up the pieces and carry on as usual. The problem is, there is no “norm,” so to speak. Traditions seem empty, and those things that once brought us joy are tinged with melancholy. Life goes on, of course, and happiness is found in
other outlets as new customs are established and flourish over time. The memories we treasure become the backbone, the foundation, of our existence, as we build upon them and incorporate new generations and settings. It can be a painful process, to be sure, but those memories, and the prospect of making new ones, provide the motivation to forge ahead. And so, on this, my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, I remember the loving man at the center of so many of my happiest memories. I find solace in knowing that he is always with me, in one form or another, along with all of my loved ones who have passed on through the years. And I take comfort in the fact that so many special people have touched my life.

Run for the Warriors
Art of Giving John LaVelle, a North Babylon High School Class of 2003 graduate and teaching artist, visited the district to lead a twoday, hands-on workshop designed to help students carve and paint pumpkins for a charity event. LaVelle, who collaborated on the project with art teachers Theresa Marchionna, Rose
Whalen and Veronica Murphy, visited Robert Moses Middle School the first day and the high school the second day. On October 21st, the Performing Arts Support Association will be sponsoring its first “Pumpkin Walk” at William E. DeLuca Elementary School. All
members of the school district and community are invited to take a fall stroll, play games and enjoy autumn treats while they bid on their favorite pumpkins. Admission is $5 per person, $4 for PASA members, and children 4 and under are admitted for free; all proceeds benefit art students’ scholarships.
On Saturday, November 12th, Babylon Town Hall will host the 9th annual Long Island Run for the Warriors in support of wounded U.S. service members, their families, and families of our fallen heroes. Participants can register for a 10K run, a 5K run or a 1-mile walk/ run. Run for the Warriors is a race that unites military and civilian community members, connecting and educating each on the importance of embracing their neighbors. The goal of each event is to establish a long-term understanding and respect for the needs of local military families. Panther Pride former football coach Tom DiNuovo, along with Babylon alumni recognized for their athletic achievements - Drew Peters (’01), Christine VanSchaick (’98) and Hans Seidenberg (’73). This year’s homecoming was special for the school community, as it marked the first one played in the renovated football stadium. As the varsity football team raced down the field and tore through a giant “Homecoming 2016” banner, they showed they were ready to take on their opponents, the Center Moriches Red Devils. By the end of the second quarter, the Babylon Panthers had a commanding 42-0 lead over the Center Moriches Red Devils. Superintendent of Schools Linda J. Rozzi
began the halftime ceremony by thanking the community for their overwhelming support and helping to rededicate the new turf field to Coach Walter F. Williams. Joseph DeLucca, a 1943 Babylon graduate and former athlete coach under Mr. Williams, also shared a reading celebrating the late coach’s life. In addition to the ceremony, both the marching band and cheerleading squad performed entertaining routines and Robert Lum and Celina Saffioti were crowned homecoming king and queen, respectively. Spirits remained high throughout the rest of the event, which ended in a 42-6 win for the Panthers.

Under picture-perfect skies, the Babylon School District community joined together to show support for their Babylon Panthers during the 2016 homecoming weekend. The events began on October 15th with a spirited parade through the Village of Babylon. Community members lined Main Street to cheer on the homecoming royalty nominees, Babylon JuniorSenior High School’s marching band, varsity cheerleaders and several student organizations. Prior to the start of the game, four individuals were recognized for their athletic contributions to the Babylon community and were inducted into the Athletic Booster Club Wall of Fame. West Babylon School District has appointed Scott Payne executive director of curriculum and instruction, effective October 6th.
Most recently, Payne served as principal of West Babylon Junior High School, a position he has held since 2008. He began his career in the West
Academic Achievement Babylon School District in 2001 as the assistant principal of West Babylon Junior High School. Prior to that, Payne held various teaching and administrative positions at North Shore High School, the Green Vale School, LIU Post and Columbia University. Payne holds a bachelor of science in biology from Stony Brook University, a master’s degree in science education from Columbia University and a professional diploma in supervision and administration form Stony Brook University. He is currently pursuing a doctor of education degree in educational supervision and administration at St. John’s University.
West Babylon Senior High School student Conor Burbige has been named a Commended Student in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 34,000 students throughout the
nation are recognized with this honor based on their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, this recognition denotes
