One Year Later By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Almost exactly one year ago, Long Islanders experienced what can only be described as the wrath of Mother Nature in the form of Hurricane Sandy. In the midst of power outages and damage assessment, we here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers managed to publish a newspaper, and I – displaced from my home on the south shore – attempted to compile a few thoughts in an effort to produce a column amid the chaos. Here are a few excerpts… We always think it’s not going to happen here. Whatever “it” is, we have grown so used to absently

observing most catastrophes from a distance, never foreseeing the day when they will wind up right in our own backyards. Literally. Some people lucked out. Others were not so fortunate, and will spend the next few weeks and months – years even – cleaning up all that was left behind, however little it may be. They say someone always has it worse off than you, and this is true. Except in this case, many of those most devastated happen to be our family members, friends and neighbors – the worst off of whom don’t even have a home to go back to. As with all events of this magnitude, peoples’ true colors tend to shine through, for better or worse. Here in the Long
Island/New York City area, we have witnessed a bit of both. But there are slivers of brightness struggling to shine through the chaos. Strangers banding together to organize food and clothing drives, businesses opening their doors to the public for heat, shelter, a place to charge cell phones and laptops and reconnect with the outside world… all signs that, amidst the mayhem, some basic humanity does exist. Let’s all hang in there. Together, we can – and will – get through this. And we have. Mostly. Some better than others. Still a long road to full recovery, but at least we have begun the journey.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism
on Long Island, hosted its Walk, Run & Ride for Autism on September 29th at the Holtsville Ecology Center. DDI raised over
$47,000 to help fund the vital programs and services DDI provides to over 5,000 families served by their educational and
residential programs, adult day training and medical services. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said CoChairman of the event Brian Brunjes. “This year we not only met our financial goal, but we exceeded it. It is inspiring to see the generosity of a community come together and lend themselves to help benefit thousands of families who need services for their loved ones.” Hundreds of Long Islanders came out for the fun filled day. The day kicked off with the Matthew Stansky Memorial Run followed by
a scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County’s Holtsville Ecology Park that featured activities for the entire family along the way. For the second year in a row, the event included a Motorcycle and classic car run sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. The day was capped off with a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more. This years event Grand Marshals are six recent St. John’s University graduates who spent one week walking 128-miles in the blistering heat this past May from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Montauk Lighthouse in order to benefit DDI. Raising over
$22,000, Nathan Holmes, John Kenny, Morgan Zajkowski, Michael Cunniff, Liam Kenny and Michael Sardone have proved to be worthy honorees. “We would not be able to help the over 5,000 families that DDI services if it wasn’t for our tremendous sponsors,” commented Co-Chairman Charley Hudson. “While the list of supporters is long, there are a few people whose efforts cannot go unmentioned including our Grand Marshals. These are six amazing and talented young individuals who deserve to be applauded.”

Suffolk County music honors were bestowed upon four Babylon High School students, as they were selected to participate in this fall’s NYSCAME/ SCMEA All-County Music Festival. Camila Romero will sing in the women’s chorus, Matthew Taggart will perform the tuba in
the orchestra ensemble, and Amanda Crowley and Brooke Wexler will be featured in the mixed chorus. “This distinction notes that these performers are among the top studentmusicians in all of Suffolk County,” said Director of Fine Arts Angela Turk.
“The music department is very proud knowing they will represent their school and community well at this year’s festival.” Students were selected for these honors based on their 2013 NYSSMA solo evaluation scores.

Babylon Elementary School students and families laced up their sneakers and walked to school in early October as part of this year’s International Walk To School Day. Hundreds of individuals left traditional means of transportation behind as they took part in the program. Whether their journey was miles long or just around the block, the excitement for
the event was at a record high. “On this day, as part of our Healthy Heart Week, we encourage students to eat healthy, drink lots of water, get extra sleep and get moving,” said Principal Jessica Kemler, who coordinated the event with physical education teacher Rob Andrews. “Walking to school is a great way to add exercise into our day. What makes this event even

more special is being able to share that walk with family and friends.” Students were dressed in Babylon colors as they arrived at the school building to receive their participation stickers. This is the sixth year the school has taken part in this international program, which regularly draws participation from approximately 40 countries worldwide.

Students, teachers, staff and families at Forest Avenue School in the West Babylon School District took it all in stride as they participated in International Walk To School Day. The event focused on community
involvement, developing healthy habits, and promoting a clean and safe environment. Forest Avenue families gathered with teachers and staff at the corner of Forest Avenue and Little East Neck Road to walk
to school together, with local police providing a safe escort. Encouraged by favorable weather and an inspirational purpose, everyone benefited from the experience.
