Fall Fishing Festival Continued From 3 State Park is proud to host the annual Fall Family Fishing Festival,” said NYS Parks Long Island Regional Director Wayne Horsley. “With an abundance of activities to explore throughout the day, the festival provides a great introduction for both children and families to learn and experience all that fishing has to offer.” Festival activities include spin-casting and fly-fishing instruction, casting practice, loaner rods, free bait, and fish-cleaning services. In addition to fishing opportunities, there will be face painting, a children’s casting for pumpkins contest, live animal show, and much more. A display area will be set up by Trout Unlimited, DEC Environmental Education, New York State Parks, as well as other

fishing and environmental organizations. The fishing license requirement for all anglers over the age of 16 is suspended for this festival, and admission and parking are free. The children’s casting for pumpkins contest will be ongoing or as long as pumpkins last, during which kids can catch a pumpkin or “hook” a prize. Casting contest prizes are provided by I FISH NY, State Parks, The Fisherman Magazine, Knights of Columbus of Seaford, and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Prior to the festival, State Parks will stock South and McDonald Ponds in the park with hundreds of brook and rainbow trout. DEC also stocks several water bodies in Nassau and Suffolk counties including Upper Twin Pond, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa

Reservoir, and 12 other Suffolk County lakes with brown trout. These stockings will occur by October 18th, and will provide excellent prospects for fall fishing. A second DEC stocking will occur by November 9th. Bond Referendum Vote At its meeting on October 3rd, the North Babylon Union Free School District Board of Education unanimously voted to adopt a resolution to move forward with a facilities improvement project for community consideration in the form of a $69,249,5000 bond. The bond would include construction and improvements to all district buildings, including: Improvements to heating, ventilation, electrical,

lighting, plumbing and air conditioning Replacement of doors, windows, floors, bleachers and lockers Turf field construction including new playing fields, tennis courts, scoreboard and a press box Improvements to pavement, sidewalks, parking and bus loops Addition of a state-ofthe-art science labs and cosmetology classroom at the high school

The Perks of Being a Student Let me begin by stating that I have not been a college student for the better part of the last 13 years. That said, I still find myself enjoying some of the perks associated with being an alumna of one of our fine local institutions. It takes a bit of the sting out of being asked for ID when purchasing tickets to R-rated movies. Last year, I received a press invite for an intimate gathering of students at a Q&A with none other than Long Island’s own Billy Joel. Casual conversation, a few funny anecdotes, a verse from a song or two while seated at the piano - it was every fan’s dream to be in that audience of several hundred. The press, as it turned out, was asked to leave after the first 15 minutes of the event, to avoid the flash photography, videography and distraction often associated with a throng of media lined up in the back.

As cameramen and reporters were ushered out one by one, I received no more than a passing glance from the administrators in charge of “clearing” the area. Smartphone in hand, I tried to look as inconspicuous as possible until they had all gone. Once the coast was clear, I surveyed the remaining students to see them eagerly snapping photos and recording bits and pieces. Since no one had instructed that this was not allowed, I followed suit. The perks of being a “student,” indeed, if only for one day. This past week, I noticed a similar event upcoming, featuring former President Bill Clinton. Tickets ranged into the hundreds of dollars; but, in fine print, I noticed a line about complimentary tickets being available to students. Intrigued, I contacted the school to inquire if, perhaps, I might pass for a student once

more. I was told that, yes, this would be possible, and I could even be permitted in the press box as well. Once there, I determined that the so-called “press” was actually standing behind the row where I was to be seated, crammed in among the cameras on tripods, wiring and soundboards. About five minutes into the speaking engagement, I assessed the situation and gave up my special access in favor of a (somewhat) comfier seat down below. Once again, youth prevailed, granting me a better view of the action with none of the chaos. People have always said to me, you just wait - in a few years, you’ll be longing for the days when people thought you were so much younger… it’s a compliment, enjoy it while it lasts… Years later, I have to say, I’m beginning to see their point.

On Saturday, September 16th, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez visited Gilgo Beach to thank the scores of dedicated volunteers who participated in the American Littoral Society (ALS) Annual Coastal Clean-Up Effort at Gilgo Beach. The mission of the ALS is to empower programs focused on advocacy, education and conservation of our precious shorelines and beach areas. For the past six years, the town’s

Beautification Program has partnered with the Long Island Beach Access Group (LIBAG) in coordinating the annual event. Under the direction of LIBAG president Ray Erickson, over 280 lbs. of debris was removed and carefully documented by volunteers from PSEGLI, Copiague Target store, Lindenhurst High School Robotics Club, Robert Moses Middle School Environmental Club, Microchip Technologies,

National Honor Society students as well as local residents and beach-goers. Each year, the amount of debris has declined, which reflects the efforts of environmental stewardship by motivated community members and businesses who value our wildlife and the importance of keeping our coastal areas clean and beautiful. All volunteers receive Certificates of Appreciation from Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer for their admirable efforts.

New Initiative The Babylon School District recently received a generous donation of $25,000 from NYS Assemblywoman Christine Pellegrino to support and enhance the school’s newly implemented K-6 Social Emotional Program, titled Second Step. The social emotional program came about due to the brainstorming of multiple district staff members. It aims to promote school success, school connectedness, and a safe, respectful, responsible school climate by directly teaching the skills that strengthen the students’ ability to learn, manage emotions, have empathy and solve problems. Throughout the course of a recent visit to Babylon Memorial Grade School, Assemblywoman Pellegrino was able to sit down with Babylon Memorial Grade School Principal Steven Goldberg, Babylon Elementary School Principal Travis Davey and Superintendent

of Schools Linda Rozzi to discuss the district’s robust efforts to date and brainstorm ideas to further the success of the initiative in the future. Babylon Memorial Grade School third-grade teacher Catherine O’Connor was on hand in the school library to demonstrate an exemplary lesson rooted in the Second Step philosophy with her class.

As the students interacted amongst each other and focused on their listening skills, they also optimized concentration habits. “I was grateful to have been able to discuss the strong relationships Babylon has had with our elected officials, and how we work together on initiatives that help public schools,” said Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “Due to Assemblywoman Pellegrino’s generous aid, students will be able to look forward to additions to the program such as yoga sessions during the winter months.”

The panel, in conjunction with the Town of Babylon Beacon Family Wellness Center, will take place at Lindenhurst High School from 7 until 9 p.m. Sergio Argueta, Chairperson and Founder of Struggles to Reunite Our New Generation (S.T.R.O.N.G.) Youth Inc., will host the event. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini; Hon. Fernando Camacho, Acting Justice of the Suffolk County Supreme Court; and a representative from the Suffolk County Probation Gang Unit will also be panel members. “We are hosting this event to create awareness of this issue and to educate our residents about how to prevent gang related activity in their neighborhoods and in their homes,” said Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “We hope that this panel serves as a useful tool for all our residents and provides the information needed to better our community as a whole.” The event will inform parents about gangs on Long Island and the ways to prevent their children from joining them. Topics

discussed will include the dangers of gang affiliation and warning signs parents can identify in their children’s behavior. The speakers will also discuss the opioid crisis plaguing Long Island communities and how it is related to local gangs. “The grave matter of these issues at hand are
