nder sunny skies on a beautiful Fall day, it was all smiles as Suffolk County Legislator Lou D’Amaro joined North Babylon High School students, administrators, local youth athletes and Board of Education members in a show of “Bulldog Pride” for the annual North Babylon High School Homecoming Parade on Saturday, September 28th. The Bulldogs went on to defeat local rivals Copiague High School, 39-8.

Commuting. Whether by train, plane or automobile, it has the potential to be tedious, inconvenient and highly frustrating. This last year has more than made up for it. Case in point: Just the other morning, I was cruising on the Southern State when I passed one of those helpful overhead signs alerting you to any traffic
delays you might encounter up ahead. “Traffic Moving Well” it said. Wonderful. A few exits later, dead stop. No flashing lights, no sirens, no accidents in sight. Inching along, but why? Oh but there it was, way up ahead, the unmistakable orange cone – construction. Three lanes merging into one – no warning, no signs, not a human worker in sight… just a flashing arrow instructing the cars miles up ahead to start moving over. Perfect. Of course, even in such a situation when clearly no one is going anywhere fast, don’t think the drivers’ level of courtesy increases by even

This past summer, students in grades K-5, in the West Babylon School District, were encouraged to read ten books and also spend at least five hours practicing their math on
the IXL math website. Some children did one or the other, or a modified combination of both. Students at Santapogue School in grades K – 2 and grades 3 – 5, who completed
both the summer reading and math assignments, were recognized for their commitment to learning. Congratulations to all of these students.

It was a community affair as the North Babylon High School varsity football team took on the Copiague Eagles to cap off the Homecoming 2013 festivities. During the game, Jahjuan Winters and Brandon Sobotker each scored two touchdowns and rushed for more than 100 yards apiece. With the stands overflowing with proud alumni, community members and family members all wearing their Bulldog blue and white,
the varsity team handily defeated Copiague by a score of 39-8, improving their record to 2-1 in Suffolk’s Division II. The celebration began days earlier with the high school’s annual Spirit Week. Students and staff showcased their creativity during Nationality Day, Twin Day and Superhero Day before wearing their blue and white to cheer on the fall sports teams at the Friday afternoon pep rally. The Board of Education and high school
administration maintained the spirit as they led the way through town in the homecoming parade, during which the marching band, kickline and cheerleaders performed, while the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes showed off their spirit banners. With community support and student spirit, Homecoming 2013 successfully demonstrated North Babylon pride.

Babylon Memorial Grade School students who participated in this past summer’s school reading program, themed “Dig Into Reading,” and completed two or more written response forms took part in a Summer Reading Planting Celebration this September. The students, who were named to the Summer Reading Honor Roll, had their names displayed in the hallway outside the cafeteria and helped beautify the school grounds by planting
which enables them to help peers learn new activities and gives those with medical limitations the ability to remain involved in the day’s events. The school also plans to start a walking club during recess times in the upcoming weeks, during which students will have the chance to track their steps using pedometers. “Previously, students who were not interested in taking part in the large group game [soccer or football] would have a limited number of options to keep active during recess times,” explained guidance
such books as Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan and Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Among the choices for grades three and four were The Borrowers by Mary Norton and The Houdini Box by Brian Selznick. The mission of the program is to encourage students to view reading as a lifelong recreational activity. The school extends its appreciation to the Home Depot in Bay Shore for donating the bulbs.
Commended Student Babylon High School senior Jedidiah Dale has been selected as a Commended Student out of more than 1.5 million candidates nationwide in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. This year, approximately
Continuing with its work to teach students about the importance of leading healthy lifestyles, Babylon Memorial Grade School introduced a series of new recess activities and games to students this September. Two colorful beanbag checkerboards, two refreshed hopscotch stations and two foursquare games now brighten up the playground’s blacktop, and several pieces of large group equipment have been added to the daily options. A reorganized structure for large group games now calls for students to take on leadership roles as referees,
daffodils in the front of the building. The flowers will bloom in the spring and serve as a visual reminder of the summer program’s benefits. The summer reading program has become a tradition at the school. Each June, students are provided with gradeappropriate recommended reading lists and encouraged to make time throughout their vacation to read. This year, students in grades five and six had the chance to choose from
counselor Francesca Johnson, who coordinated the refurbishment project. “These increased options now provide an outlet for all students to participate in something of interest to them.” The new activities were introduced at the start of the year and will be updated as weather calls for more indoor recesses. A neighboring Girl Scout troop aided in the painting of the blacktop surfaces, and supplies for the project were donated by the Home Depot and Walmart in Farmingdale.

Raising Funds The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) held its 33rd Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational on September 23rd and brought in more than $200,000 to support its life-saving substance abuse prevention programs and comprehensive addiction services. More than 170 golfers teed-off at The Creek and Piping Rock Clubs in Locust Valley and 200 dinner guests gathered in support of LICADD. Key sponsors included: The Jobin Organization; The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation; Baum-Essex Manufacturing; Seafield Center; Moritt Hock & Hamroff; Murray Hill Suites;
Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty; Hirshleifers; and Astoria Federal Savings.
