Mrs. Harnett used Mr. Green’s visit, as well as his success in both career and life, as a teachable moment for her middle school students. “Danny is here as an inspiration to each and every one of you,” Ms. Harnett said to her students after the presentation. “He had a dream and worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week to achieve that dream. It’s official. Autumn has arrived, and with it, quickly fading are those last golden rays of summer sunshine, any lingering tan lines, the prospect of wearing flip flops and short sleeves … and, as of this printing, the Yankees’ playoff hopes. Just like that. What a difference one week can make, right? I know, I know … get over it. Seasons come and go, weather changes and we all had just better get used to it – and quickly. Each month brings with it its own unique excitement, and there are those who far prefer the

winter cold to any number of days spent lounging on the beach. (I would not be one of them, in case you couldn’t tell.) But here we are, at any rate, on the verge of October, with the holiday season lurking right over the horizon. Tis’ the season for Oktoberfest and Fall Festivals, high school and college Homecoming parades and games, pumpkin picking and Halloween costume parties. Before you know it, we’ll be making our shopping lists for Black Friday. And, just like that, summer will be a distant memory.

For two weeks in July, North Babylon High School junior Liam Gargiulo participated in the Ithaca College Summer Music Academy. According to the academy’s website, 381 students from 18 states and six foreign countries participated in the program. During the two weeks, each participant was given the opportunity to experience being a music major, including dorm room living. During his time at the camp, Liam majored in trombone and enjoyed numerous musical and non-musical opportunities, including

two wind ensemble rehearsals, three electives, a large band rehearsal, and numerous events and concerts. Liam remarked that this was his greatest

musical experience and that he is very grateful to band director Frank Rizzo for his recommendation to this program.

Senior advocates are County representatives who come out to the local community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies. “Nobody should ever have to go without food, medical attention or other necessities, which is why our senior advocates literally bring these vital programs and services directly to our seniors in
