The first class is a one day class held Saturday October 15th, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The second class is a two day class held Saturday October 22nd and completed Saturday October 29th. Both are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Upon course completion from either class, students will be issued certificates that are accepted as proof of having had boating education in accordance with the N.Y.S. It’s funny how many different forms the term “friendship” can take on these days. Gone is the time when having a new “best friend” every year of elementary school was the norm, replaced instead by a handful of fairly close friends and an infinite number of what can only be classified as acquaintances; those you may travel in similar circles with but, once the circle is broken, severed is the superficial connection forged as well. Even among those close friends, there are breakdowns. There are those who you may only see sporadically to grab dinner or catch a movie with, yet when you do get together, it’s like no time has elapsed at all. Then there are the friends you embark on daylong

adventures with, aimlessly wandering the streets of New York City, the beaches of Long Island and everything in between. These are the days of memories made, of endless photographs snapped… the days you will fondly recall years from now, and smile. I recently came across a quote: “Photographs are proof that once, even if just for a heartbeat, everything was perfect.” Not only does it speak to my personal love of photography as a whole, but to that notion of reﬂecting upon moments and savoring them. Sure, it is equally important to be present in the moment and experience it fully; but pictures have the ability to preserve an instant in a way that memory alone cannot always fulfill. through October 2nd. The exhibit, which depicts the balance of light and form, serves as a testament to Blank’s artistic knowledge and talent. The district

congratulates Blank, who has taught in North Babylon for more than 20 years, on the tremendous honor to showcase her work.

Hunting for Gingerbread Kindergarten students in Carolyn Bogart’s class at Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District started their first week of school with a hunt for a storybook character. On the first day of school, the kindergarten class read “The Gingerbread

Man.” After reading the book to the class, Ms. Bogart showed them the gingerbread man cookie. Somehow during lunch that day, the gingerbread man “escaped” the room and the students spent the next few days looking for him all around the school. Ms. Bogart used the

activity to give the kindergartners a tour of the school, stopping at the nurses office, main office and other areas to ask staff member if they saw the gingerbread man. Finally, during their library period, the students were able to locate the gingerbread man in the library.

Junior Achievement of New York has selected John F. Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon School District as Elementary School of the Year for fall 2016. Warm Welcome featured their own custom names on the back. This year will feature several new district initiatives geared toward preparing students for success both in and outside the classroom. These updates include the introduction of Advanced Placement physics and psychology courses and new extracurricular offerings, such as a debate club at the junior-senior high school and a new art club at the elementary level. Additionally, as part

of the district’s approved bond project, several instructional spaces have been updated to meet 21st century learning standards, including Rowe Hall, several science labs and the culinary and photography classrooms. The back-to-school feeling was radiant throughout all three buildings, and students were eager to begin a wonderful new school year in the Babylon School District.

The Site-Based Team at Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District worked diligently to create a new cafeteria incentive program in place for the 2016-2017 year. As part of the Bee-utiful Bee-havior program, students are encouraged to demonstrate proper etiquette and thoughtfulness during lunch, and being rewarded with prizes. Teachers in each classroom will task two students as a “Bee Keeper” and a “Busy

Bee Inspector.” The “Bee Keeper” will be be responsible for making sure that everyone has the utensils, napkins, straws and condiments they need, and the “Busy Bee Inspector” will be responsible for inspecting his/her classroom’s tables when they have completed their meals and exited the cafeteria. Each day, one section at each grade level will be announced as the recipient of the “Best Bee-havior Award,” which will be distributed by the

The day was filled with smiles and high fives as students reconnected with their fellow classmates and quickly settled into their new school routines. To visually mark the start of their last year of high school, the senior class proudly donned their selfdesigned T-shirts, which

The “Beehive” will be ready in the cafeteria for each day’s lunch sessions. Each day’s winners will also be announced by Principal Drew Olson. The Site-Based Team’s idea to create the Beeutiful Bee-havior program at Parliament is another way students are being taught the value of character education.

New Year, New Building School both offered the opportunity for new students to tour the building before opening day. After reconnecting with their friends throughout the week, students began to ease into their new routines and settled in for a productive school year.

Babylon Junior-Senior High School seventhgraders took the first step in the next phase of their educational journey during an informative summer orientation held on August 31st. Throughout the program, the students

and their parents learned about the various opportunities offered at the high school from building administrators and members of the school’s student council. Additionally, the seventhgraders toured the building with the help of

upperclassman volunteers, and parents were introduced to more staff members and discovered ways to strengthen the home-to-school connection by joining the PTA.

As parents and school-bound children throughout Long Island organized school supplies and struggled to get to bed at a decent hour the night before the first day of school, Parents Association volunteers from Deer Park’s Saints Cyril & Methodius School were hard at work spreading joy and comfort to the homes of each of the school’s incoming Kindergarten students. They took the time to pitch welcome signs for each member of SSCM’s Class of 2025 and here are just a few of the smiles they brought to the students’ faces. No first day jitters for these youngsters, as they donned their brand new school shoes and backpacks and headed off to the start of their academic careers at Saints Cyril and Methodius. Here’s to a successful year to all students as the year ramps up to full speed ahead!
