Paying it Forward their newly-acquired skills but were pleasantly surprised to learn that an anonymous patron had paid the bill for the entire group. With this notion in mind, they decided to pay forward the good deed by donating their meal’s budgeted money toward a charitable organization of their choice. “When the waitress shyly told us that someone had
covered our bill, we were astounded,” said Babylon Junior-Senior High School special education teacher Keith Fasano. “You could see by the expressions on the students’ faces that their belief that people are inherently good was reaffirmed. Due to this deed, we all agreed that it was our job to look out for one another.”

The weather didn’t dampen the spirits of West Babylon School District’s students and staff as they ushered in the start of the 2017-2018 school year on September 6th. Students were all smiles as they carried in their backpacks filled with new school supplies. Junior and senior high school students navigated their new schedules and tried out their lockers as they made their way through the first few days of school. To help ease the fear of
the week, students began to ease into their new routines and settled in for a productive school year.

Some will say the summer months flew by in the blink of an eye; others will say they dragged on unbearably. How drastic are the differences in perception from one person to another. It’s funny how things seem to move in fast forward once the school year gets underway. Halloween decorations have been out in full force for weeks, with Christmas not far behind. That spring cleaning that we’ve been putting off until fall is now begging for our attention. As the leaves begin to turn, can outdoor cleanups be far behind as well? In the entertainment world, gone are the evenings of summer concerts under the stars, replaced instead by nights spent in front of

the television as many of our favorite shows return from hiatus. That baseball season which once seemed endless on opening day in April is now nearing its final stretch, as playoff pictures begin to take shape. All this, while football season takes over, and each Sunday’s activities become dictated by the game schedule of your favorite team. Soon enough, all roads heading eastward will be jammed with traffic as the masses scramble to take advantage of each beautiful autumn weekend. Pumpkin picking, apple picking, hayrides, corn mazes… so much to accomplish in so little time. And yet, there is always precisely the same amount of time. It’s all in how we choose to use it. A good family friend of mine recently commented that we all tend to live as though we have this list of obligations

to complete, rather than taking a step back and simply experiencing each moment as it happens. There is very little we actually have to do; in fact, almost nothing is required within a particular time frame. And so, we can afford to relax a bit, to take our time transitioning, whether it is from one season to the next or something larger and more significant to our personal lives. So, while the calendar may indicate autumn just a few days from now, that doesn’t mean we need to give up enjoying the warmth of the sun, or throw away our remaining summer plants in favor of mums and pumpkins. All in good time. Autumn is a season of transition in itself, a cross-section of weather and activities, even fashion. A season of plenty. Plenty to appreciate. Plenty to embrace. Plenty to enjoy.

Hop Fest Set LI Hops, a 43-acre farm located in the North Fork wine region of Long Island will again host the Long Island Fresh Hop Fest - the largest fresh hop fest on the east coast - on Saturday, September 23rd. The event will offer sampling of special locally brewed beers made with locally grown and harvested hops, many brewed in small batches for this event only. Plus this year, attendees will also be able to enjoy locally crafted pumpkin beers like the Pumpkin Spice ale from Long Island’s newest brewery, Jamesport Farm Brewery; limited-release seasonal brews like Long Ireland Brewing Company’s Octoberfest, a Märzenstyle lager; or hopped cider from Stowe, Urban Farm Fermentory, Cidergeist, or Indian Ladder Farm Cidery and Brewery, visiting from
the Hudson Valley. The attendees will enjoy an afternoon of beer and cider sampling, hop farming education, and live music. The event will be held at the LI Hops farm located at 5873 Sound Ave, Riverhead, NY 11901 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 23rd. Tickets are on sale now at www.LIFreshHopFestival. com. Tickets include all sampling and a special glass taster to take home as a souvenir. A very limited number of tickets will be sold for this special event. Attendees must be 21+ to attend. Live music performed by local favorite, multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter, Dan Donnelly. Much like the way winemakers celebrated the good fortune of the harvest and created the world famous Beaujolais
Nouveau, American brewers have put a twist on that age old tradition creating a new craze in the beer world, Wet Hop/ Fresh Hop ales. “What a unique experience for local beer lovers to come to an event and see how local breweries like mine are using local hops in everyday production and to have the ability to taste the unique flavors offered by a fresh hopped beer,” said Greg Martin, coowner of Long Ireland Beer Company (Riverhead). “It will be a great showcase of the farming and brewing culture on Long Island,” he added. Included in this year’s impressive lineup: • Jamesport Farm Brewery, Fresh Hop Winedout, made with their home grown LI hops • Greenport Harbor Brewing Co., a Pale Ale

hop beers, also serving a Wet Hop Pils Cask Back for its second year, the Fresh Hop Festival will introduce attendees to local and regional brewers taking advantage of the homegrown hops and offer attendees the rare opportunity to taste versions of fresh hop beers alongside the traditional version of the same beer. These fresh hop-infused beers will be special limited-edition versions of favorite local beers -many of which are not available to the general public. Brewers will be there to explain how their creations came to life and how they chose what beers to fresh hop. There will be live music, food for purchase prepared by local Jamesport-based caterer Christopher Michael Catering, and educational seminars for all attendees
to enjoy. Due to the finite availability of these beers, tickets are limited, and being sold on a first come first served basis. The Fresh Hop Festival will be held on Saturday, September 23rd, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at LI Hops farm located at 5873 Sound Ave, Riverhead. Tickets ($45) are limited and on sale now at www. LIFreshHopFestival.com. Designated Driver tickets are available ($10) and do not include any sampling. No one under 21 is permitted and valid photo ID is required for entry. No children or pets permitted. The event will take place rain or shine. All ticket sales are final. Life’s rewards come in many forms But for me, it’s far from the norm As a nurse, my job allows me to help Make a difference in someone’s life Whether it’s a parent, child, friend, mother or father, husband or wife Serious situations, some not fun No time to waste, but get the job done As you look into a patient’s eyes, you know they’re scared Comfort them, reassure them you’re there Just knowing this, they’re glad Time passes quickly, and does not stand still We work hard to get the patient better And no longer ill The day nears an end, the patients did well They’re on the mend A feeling of greatness is felt All in a day’s work, oh what the heck It’s just another paycheck!
