At the ceremony, a list of the names of those from the area who died that day was read. Thanks to all those who turned out for this event.

The start of the school year was a celebratory one in the Babylon School District, as more than 20 staff members were recognized for their years of service during this September’s Superintendent’s Conference Day. District administrators, teachers and staff members convened in Babylon High School’s Rowe Hall to congratulate those individuals who have
worked in the district for the past 20, 25 and 30 years. Superintendent of Schools Richard Rozakis thanked the staff members for their dedication to Babylon and presented each of them with a small token of the district’s appreciation. This year’s honorees included: Kevin Kavanagh, 30 years; Robert Andrews, Susan Colletti, Barry Goldsholle, Jackie Marino and Kim Ricchiuti, 25 years; and Karen Altieri,
Donna Hendrickson, Claire Joseph, Mark Malaszczyk, Nancy Maloney, Beth Marinelli, John Michele, Loretta Padden, Jean Marie Parker, Marlene Potak, Lonell Rogers, Barbara Small, Angela Turk, Richard Villanueva and Rayna Zwerlein, 20 years. During his welcome address, Mr. Rozakis spoke to the educators about their shared mission – educating students to not only be college- and
career-ready, but also well-versed 21st-century learners – and his belief that the teachers before him were well-prepared to fulfill this responsibility. He also shared information regarding the continued implementation of the Common Core Learning Standards and details surrounding the recently released New York State assessment results. A major focus of the program was the topic
of curriculum writing. Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Daniel D’Amico spoke about the district’s use of a new educational resource, NY Learns, as well as the completed summer writing projects. He explained that the online program will enable the district to digitally manage its curriculum to ensure vertical and horizontal alignment and to offer a variety of
resources for teachers. Providing professional development on the system first to all attendees and subsequently to smaller grade-specific groups at the elementary and grade schools, NY Learns representative Ashley Way spoke in greater detail about the curriculum management and standards-based system.

Game Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Many athletes will tell you they view each game as if it is their last – win or go home, lose and face elimination. They claim it raises the bar by creating a sense of urgency often missing day to day. In the case of the New York Yankees, the better part of the last month has had a “playoff” type atmosphere, with the team resurrecting itself from the ashes of the American League East to at least put themselves in contention
for a Wild Card berth. That’s a far cry from a few months back, when it seemed that every game brought yet another player relegated to the disabled list and a growing tally of blowout losses that were rather painful to watch. The point? For those non-Yankee fans, it just goes to show that, no matter how dire a situation may look, there is always hope. All it takes is the first step. And then the next. And the one after that. Momentum is the key to all progress. This doesn’t
mean that the outcome will necessarily turn out as hoped, but isn’t it better to make things exciting along the way? I think so. (Met fans might disagree.) In fact, most fans have simply decided that baseball season is over - time to move on to football, to be followed in short order by hockey and basketball. But not so fast – as a very famous catcher once said, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Til then, sit back and enjoy the show. It’s going to be quite a ride to the finish.

The transition from the long days of summer to the early fall provided a picturesque backdrop for students in the Babylon School District as they returned to school on September 9th. Dressed in their newest
apparel, equipped with the necessary back-to-school supplies and eager to learn, the students were greeted by Superintendent of Schools Richard Rozakis, their buildings’ principals and members of the teaching staff upon arrival.

School’s Back and Soon the Flu Will be Too!! Get A Flu Shot Now! Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2013-2014 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.
Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).
Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of with holding vaccines? A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. Many homeowners may not know that pruning trees in the winter can benefit some trees. Deciduous trees are dormant in winter, so they won’t bleed sap when pruned at this time of year like they will at other times of year. In addition, many varieties of trees are less likely to attract disease or insects if pruned in the winter. Oak trees, for example, emit a strong odor when
another can be pruned. Such limbs may prohibit the growth of nearby limbs. • Remove limbs that are growing in. Some tree limbs may appear to be growing toward the interior of the tree, and these limbs can be pruned. • Remove limbs growing toward the ground. A healthy tree’s limbs will grow outward, not toward the ground.

Tree limbs that are crossing, rubbing or growing parallel to one
• Remove dead limbs. Dead limbs simply take up space, and a dead limb is not going to grow back come the spring. Dead, broken or diseased limbs should be removed when pruning. • Do not top trees. Tree topping is the removal of large branches and/or trunks from the top of a tree. Topping leaves a tree susceptible to disease and insect infestation, and homeowners who

Live Like Ron
passed away on July 20th at the age of 75 after a five month battle with cancer. Supervisor Schaffer presented Ron’s friends and family members with a
proclamation to recognize Ron’s achievements and community service. Dieumegard was a lifelong Copiague resident and a graduate of Amityville Memorial High School. He volunteered for over 20 years with several organizations including Camp Adventure on Shelter Island, which is a week-long sleep away camp for children with cancer and their siblings. Ron was also an organizer for the Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged, a member of the Long Island Citizens for Community Values and a donor to the Long Island Teens Challenge. Known for his road trips across
the country in his RV, Ron would collect clothing to pass out on his journeys. On one trip, Ron encountered a group of Iraq War veterans on motorcycles who were riding to raise money for wounded soldiers and ended up traveling with them for six months to help their cause. Ron’s friends and family members decided to start “Like Like Ron” to encourage others to embrace the same charitable spirit and goodwill towards others that Ron himself practiced. “Live Like Ron Day” serves to recognize and promote these values within the Town of Babylon.

The program will discuss ways to recognize PTSD symptoms related to the experiences of veterans and members of the armed forces, Superstorm Sandy survivors and victims of crime and domestic abuse. “From our proud service members to the residents affected by Superstorm Sandy, many of our friends, family members and neighbors are fighting a silent battle within themselves as a result of a traumatic or lifethreatening experience,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “I strongly encourage those who know someone struggling with PTSD to attend these seminars so that we can gain a better understanding of what
