The Brain Aneurysm Center of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI), along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), will host Long Island’s 5th Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Four-Mile Fun Run/Two-Mile Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 28th, to promote awareness and education. Proceeds from the walk will benefit CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the BAF to support essential research that may directly benefit those affected and help to reduce the incidence of ruptured aneurysms. Hundreds of walkers, including brain aneurysm survivors and their family and friends, are expected to attend the fun-filled event. Many doctors, nurses and staff members from CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center will also be in attendance to show their support of the many patients they

People can and do recover from mental illnesses and psychiatric disabilities; and 2.) Providing accurate information and good public policy supports people to get the help they need.” During the week of Sunday, October 6th through Saturday, October 12th anti-stigma events are being coordinated throughout Suffolk County with the goal of reaching every Long Island family. Events include art showcases, film screenings, discussion groups, mental health screening events, and a kick-off event on October 7th at 8:30 a.m. in Hauppauge. This Community Conversation will generate feedback to send to the White House. The White House initiated the national conversation on mental health at a conference on June 3rd with President Obama delivering opening remarks and Vice President Biden providing closing remarks and have encouraged Community Conversation in local communities to provide further input into a National effort to raise awareness and increase mental health awareness. The Mental Health Association in Suffolk County (MHAS), Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans are pleased to announce a local campaign to bring awareness about mental illness to our community. Stigma is commonly cited as a major reason why someone suffering from a mental health disorder does not seek help. Mental Illness Awareness Week is a national campaign established by Congress in 1990 and held the first full week of October. For the past 20 years Mental Illness Awareness Day has been held in Suffolk County during the National Mental Illness Awareness Week, with the goal of reducing stigma and promoting understanding through an educational and motivational conference for people with lived experience in the mental health system, their families and friends, service providers, students and the community. When Worlds Collide By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the fall season tends to come an avalanche of entertainment. You have the intersection of football and baseball, new television season premieres and lots of movie and music releases to contend with, making your recreational choices far more interesting for the first time in months. What to watch, what to do…so many decisions, but for a change, the fun, trivial kind. This collision of all things entertainment never really hit me before until I happened to be attending a New York Mets game on the
very same night as the U.S. Open was taking place next door. As both events let out at seemingly the exact same instant, the rush of people streaming into one another (literally) was quite an experience, with those from Citi Field heading to the train platform and those from the Tennis Center making their way to the subways down below. It was an interesting contrast – quite the range of diversity on that boardwalk in that moment… people from all walks of life mingling after a night of taking in some of the finest local athletes (well, at the Tennis Center
anyway!). So typically…I guess New Yorkish is the best way to describe the scene. Add to that the ushering in of the autumn season, everyone being back to school, shaking off the last remnants of summer…it brought a unique sense of excitement to the air. Transitions are never easy, whether in weather or in life, but – in both instances – they simply must be dealt with. Like with most things beyond our control, they are better off embraced than shunned. So welcome autumn with open arms – it’s coming whether you like it or not.

The US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 1-1 Babylon will be offering two Boating courses that are open to the public as part of the West Islip Adult Education Program. The first course entitled “About Boating Safety” will be held at West Islip High School on Thursdays, October 10th, 17th, 24th and November 7th. This Safe Boating Course is designed for “All Ages,” young and old, beginners and/or experienced boaters who would like to sharpen their Boating Skills. Topics covered include boating safety, aids to navigation, trailering, common boating problems, required safety equipment, etc. This course will also include instruction on PWC’s. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a Boating Certificate and a license to operate a PWC. There is a $35 course materials fee and a $10 Registration Fee to WISD.

Boating Courses Set The second course entitled “Great South Bay Piloting” will be also be held at West Islip High School on Wednesdays, October 30th, November 6th, 13th, 20th, December 4th and 11th. This is a comprehensive course which will prepare you with the knowledge needed to pilot Long Island’s South Shore. Topics covered include: Boat piloting, using nautical charts, fuel and trip planning, names and definitions of various types of navigation, GPS integration with standard piloting, etc. Cost is $115 which includes course materials and charts. Navigation tools are not included and will need to be purchased by the students. Prepared to make the transition from grade school to the junior-senior high school, Babylon School District’s seventhgrade students and their families received a sneak peak at their new school during a summer orientation program held in August. While the students located their “alpha homeroom” with the assistance of the student council members, parents met with Principal Al Cirone in the auditorium to discuss several of the building’s procedures. Mr. Cirone covered such policies as the morning drop-off routine, the importance of the attendance policy and the close-knit environment that exists in the school. He also shared a few tips on how the parents can help their children transition smoothly to the junior-senior high school and the various support services in place. Once in their “alpha homerooms,” a classroom they will report to the first few days of school, the students met with upperclassmen to speak candidly about questions and concerns. With updated copies of their schedules and locker assignments in hand, the students were then guided on tours of the building and practiced opening their lockers. To conclude the program, members of the student council provided the attendees with a
brief introduction to the activities and events that transpire at the school annually as well as the various clubs and sporting
teams. The school also offered a spring orientation program for the incoming class in May.
