Making the Transition To help introduce the new surroundings for incoming seventhgraders, district and Junior-Senior High School administrators - along with student volunteers - held a seventh-grade orientation day on August 27th. The incoming students, accompanied by parents and guardians, gathered in the auditorium before breaking off for individual group workshops run
by members of the high school student council and other volunteers from the older grades. “Transitioning from one school to another can be an intimidating experience,” said Superintendent Linda Rozzi. “But with this orientation and the wonderful work of our upper class volunteers, our incoming seventhgraders will be at ease and well prepared. Turning Pro into, well, something more than random meandering in search of sunsets and landscapes and quirky angles. Of course, I suppose this pursuit would also involve photographing humans from time to time…not exactly my favorite subject. See, the beauty of a landscape – aside from its quite literal beauty, of course – is that the only changing factors you need to contend with are weather-related. People, well, they’re a whole different story. They blink, they look away, they grow impatient and start waving their arms and talking before the flash finishes going off… all great material for the photo album. No wonder
why most of my digital camera roll winds up going straight to the trash. In this day and age, with all the mobile photography apps available, everyone purports to be a photographer in his or her own right. Take your smartphone, experiment with a couple of filters, post the finished product on Facebook and Instagram… then sit back and wait for the “likes,” “comments” and “shares” to come flooding in. Easy, right? Personally, I’d like to see some higher quality material on my newsfeed. Step one: purchase a “real” camera. Step two: learn how to use it. Step three: set off in search of those sunsets – and maybe a few people. Maybe.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory recently issued a proclamation honoring Mechala Stewart, a 2015 graduate of Wyandanch Memorial High School, for her selection as the first winner of the John C. Carter Scholarship. Sponsored by the Suffolk County Police Athletic League (PAL), the scholarship was created this year to honor the legacy of John C. Carter, Sr. one of Suffolk County’s first African-American police officers. A graduate of Wyandanch High School and a boxing coach for the PAL, Carter recruited atrisk Wyandanch youth to box with him at the PAL facility in Brentwood. “As a police officer, John Carter fought crime, but as a mentor, he worked to prevent it,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “His legacy lives on through this scholarship, which will help this outstanding young woman attend college.” “John Carter was not only a dedicated police officer, but also a devoted mentor to countless atrisk teenagers,” said Detective Lieutenant Bob Donohue of the PAL. “We are honored to offer this scholarship to Mechala, whose application for this award demonstrated both great promise and great achievement.” Stewart will apply the $500 scholarship toward her tuition at Farmingdale State College, where she plans to enroll in January to study nursing. “I’m grateful for this scholarship, as it will help me become a nurse,” she said. “I want to help people, and nursing seems like a good medium through which to do that.” According to Donohue, the PAL plans to continue offering the scholarship in future years.
