September is upon us, that glorious window between summer and autumn when Mother Nature gives us a taste of the fall chill to go along with the last of the warm rays of sunshine. It is a month of transition, as children head back to school, young adults pack up for college, and the rest of us try to adjust to the lessening light, the chillier temperatures and embrace all that the new season has to offer. With that, South Bay’s Seasons Magazine arrives in the mailboxes of 100,000 homes and businesses this week, debuting its new format and expanding its reach to over twice as many readers. For those who will be receiving this publication for the first time, we hope you enjoy this taste of Long Island, featuring a plethora of upcoming autumn activities, delicious recipes perfect for
family and other residents. Winners were awarded by age group. After dark, the festivities concluded with a fireworks display, a staple of the Beach Blast. Residents looked up and enjoyed the colorful display, which served as a proper sendoff to the 2017 summer season.
Beachgoers lined Overlook for a late-summer visit to the ocean and pitched tents, stuck umbrellas in the sand and of course took a swim in the water. The Town of Babylon lifeguard staff helped keep everyone safe while enjoying the waves. Over twenty children competed in this year’s ice-cream eating contest as they were cheered on by friends,

Thirteen year-old animal educator and journalist, Victoria Bonavita, recently traveled to Michigan to interview her idol, Dr. Jan Pol. Dr. Pol is a world renowned veterinarian with over 40 years of experience. In 1981, Dr. Pol and his wife Diane opened a veterinary office in central Michigan’s farm country. The business started out of his house and grew over the years to have more than 19,000 clients. Many people know Dr. Pol from his very popular reality show, ‘The Incredible Dr. Pol’, that airs on Nat Geo Wild. Victoria said, “I asked Dr. Pol if the cameras ever get in the way when he’s treating an animal and he replied, “Oh yes.”
He told me a story about a cameraman who got rolled over by a cow. The cameraman hurt his shoulder and the camera was damaged. Dr. Pol’s advice for anyone wanting to be a veterinarian is to get as much experience as possible. He suggests volunteering at a local veterinary clinic, cleaning cages and asking if you can be in the surgery room. He said you need to get use to the work done in a veterinary office.” Dr. Pol is originally from the Netherlands. He discovered his love of wanting to help animals as a child when he assisted a local vet deliver piglets. He told Victoria that if he didn’t become a veterinarian, he would have become a dairy farmer like his father.
During the visit, Victoria proudly presented Dr. Pol with a Proclamation on behalf of Suffolk County Legislator Leslie Kennedy for all his incredible work with animals. After the interview, Dr. Pol made arrangements for Victoria to visit Clay Knob Dairy Farms – often featured in the show. Victoria had a chance to meet with owner Dale Lehnert and his family, and then was treated to a complete tour of the farm and the milking process. New York State Department of E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation (DEC) E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation Officer (ECO) Timothy Fay received the 2016 “Officer of the Year” award from the ShikarSafari Club International in a ceremony hosted by long-time Club member Robert Stackler, DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today. Shikar-Safari Club International was founded in 1952 by an international group of hunters interested in exchanging ideas about the sport. Each year the club sponsors an award for the Wildlife Conservation Police Officer of the Year in all 50 states, 10 Canadian provinces and the territories of both nations, acknowledging the important part ECOs play in local, national, and international wildlife conservation. ECO Fay grew up in the Town of Champlain in Clinton County and after graduating high school joined the US Army serving 21 years, retiring from the New York Army National Guard. He attended Buffalo State Collage graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree and Graduate work in Multidisciplinary Studies. He attended and graduated from the
17th Basic Academy for Uniformed Officers, a twenty-six week residential police academy held in 2007. After graduation Tim was assigned to Region 1 and patrolled Suffolk County enforcing New York’s Environmental Conservation Law, including investigating hunting, fishing and trapping activity, releases of petroleum, asbestos and other hazardous substances, water pollution, wetland damage, timber theft, wild animals unlawfully kept as pets, and commercial and recreational marine fishing. ECO Fay keeps the mission of the Division of Law Enforcement (DLE) close to his heart, and thoroughly enjoys all the aspects of the mission, from tickets and arrest, to education, and especially outreaches. He is involved in the Youth Conservation Program, Youth Waterfowl Day and other youth oriented hunting and fishing outreaches. ECO Fay maintains one of the most diverse enforcement programs in the Division. He is adept at all aspects of the Environmental Conservation Law. Additionally, he successfully networks with outside agencies and
organizations, and he actively accepts outreach projects for the Division, helping to spread the word for protection of the environment and the State’s natural resources. ECO Fay was recognized for numerous successful marine fish and wildlife investigations involving shellfish, crustacean and food fish. With his diverse workload, he was also responsible for multiple cases concerning the unlawful disposal of solid waste. This recognition also includes his work as a Field Training Officer, directing and guiding new officers in the field, locating, identifying, enforcing big game violations and bringing the charges to a successful resolution in court. ECO Fay is trained and certified in many fields of work with the DEC Division of Law Enforcement. He is a Field training officer and a Firearms instructor, training new and current police officers inside the DEC as well as outside agencies. He is also as a member of the NYS DEC/ DLE Special Operations Group (SOG) completing the DEC Basic Tactical Operator’s Course in 2015 and the SWAT Operator Course in 2016. For the past 11 years, ECO Fay’s professional work ethic and commitment to his profession resulted in him being nominated and receiving the ShikarSafari Club International Officer of the Year award. Tim resides in Northport in Suffolk County with his wife Anne and four daughters, Emily, Lauren, Nora and Valerie.

Over 50 Fair on Sunday, September 17th from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Long Island Hilton/Huntington, its new easier location, will have over 80 exhibitors and over 30 speakers including television reality favorites. Kimberly Sherbach of Wantagh was one of the bachelorettes on the 19th edition of ABC’s hit romance reality series, “The Bachelor,” in 2015.
