ngela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for medically fragile children, celebrated the opening of its third home in Stony Brook. Graciously assisting with the Fishing Fundraiser was Captain Chris from the charter boat Fishtale, sailing out of Captree State Park in Babylon. They filled three boats with close to 200 people. It was a beautiful day, and all who attended had a great time.

The second annual Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) Cruisin’ For Kids’ Sake Motorcycle Run will take place at 10 a.m., on Saturday September 21st, with a rain date scheduled for Sunday, September 22nd. The seventy-mile ride will begin at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island office located at 70 Acorn Lane in Levittown and reach Bear Mountain State Park in Tomkins Cove, New York, next to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. The creators of this event include cycle enthusiasts Tom Slome, Rockville Centre resident, Chair of the Bankruptcy practice at Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C and Secretary of the Board of Directors for BBBSLI as well as Jeff Schwartzberg, Roslyn resident, Senior Executive Director of Colliers International, Mayor of Roslyn Estates and BBBSLI Board Member and past Chairman. “This program allows participants to combine their commitment to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, and the children who benefit from the outreach of concerned and caring volunteers, with their passion for motorcycling,” said Slome. Last year’s inaugural run raised over $5,000. Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by Assemblyman Ramos, the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) and Bishop Donald Hudson of Common Ground Church of Central Islip to tour the Suffolk County Youth Police Academy and receive $3,000 from Assemblyman Ramos for ongoing efforts to expose youth from underserved communities to the Suffolk County Police Department. “In an effort to ensure a diverse applicant pool and representation within the Suffolk County Police Department, this week-long training for youth between the ages of fifteen through eighteen was specifically designed to reach out to and attract ethnically diverse students,” said County Executive Bellone. “Allowing students to have first-hand experience of police recruit training and
interaction with police personnel will help youth to consider a career in law enforcement. I thank Assemblyman Phil Ramos for his commitment to the youth of our communities and for providing the opportunity for students who may have not had access to funds to participate in this most invaluable law enforcement program.” The program provided an opportunity for those students who have thought about a career in law enforcement or those students who believe that they would never be considered for a position as a Police Recruit the opportunity to experience five days of an actual Police Academy where students take part in similar training as a Suffolk County Police Recruit. “I’m excited for the opportunity that more children from underserved
communities are having to experience firsthand the inner workings of the Suffolk County Police Department. Historically, people of color have been underrepresented in the police ranks and the youth police academy,” said Assemblyman Phil Ramos. By securing this funding for the Suffolk County Youth Police Academy, we’re taking the right steps to increase the probability of having more minorities in the ranks in the next exam to take place in June 2015. By bringing state funding to the Police Athletic League, we’re benefitting 43 children from underserved communities and exposing them to a potential career in law enforcement.” The next entrance exam for the Suffolk County Police Department will take place in 2015.
VIBS Donation
The Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk, also known as VIBS, recently became the recipient of thirty Suffolk County used cell phones and Blackberry devices. Since 1976, VIBS has been an institution that is dedicated to advocating for the victims of domestic violence, rape, and sexual assault.
They are committed to spreading awareness and preventing these crimes from occurring in the future through extensive education. This organization’s very important work made them an ideal candidate to receive the surplus technology from Suffolk County. Hopefully, these devices
will assist VIBS in fulfilling their mission of keeping County residents safe from harm. The technology was accepted by Executive Director of VIBS, Pamela Johnston from Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D., who sponsored the legislation that approved the donation.
FOOD BANK DONATION - As the official supermarket of the NY Giants, Stop & Shop presented a $50,000 check to its NY Metro regional food banks at the recent NY Giants/Jets football game at MetLife Stadium. Stop & Shop made a commitment to donate $150 for every First Down the NY Giants made during last year’s football season. Stop & Shop will continue the First Down Donation program to the food banks throughout the 2013-2014 football season.

Dose Of Nostalgia By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I haven’t watched the MTV Video Music Awards since … oh, probably around the time *NSYNC was still a certified group. So when word leaked out that they would be reuniting at this year’s ceremony in honor of Justin Timberlake receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, well, you can imagine the hysteria which erupted among their longtime fans. In the days leading up to the big broadcast, you couldn’t escape the rumor mill – on TV, radio,
newspapers and especially social media – all buzzing with the possibility of a few moments of nostalgia. Twenty and thirtysomethings were instantly transported back to their glory days – back when music was more about the melody than what the artist was (or wasn’t, as the case may be) wearing, the staging, the choreography and all that nonsense. Sure, *NSYNC may not be every musical connoisseur’s idea of a deep, meaningful musical experience – but considering some of what is out there on the charts
today, it’s certainly done a decent job of standing the test of time. And so we tuned in. And we waited. We were shocked by the spectacle of Lady Gaga, disgusted by the antics of Miley Cyrus, and generally perplexed by the direction music has gone in the last ten years. It was quite the hour to endure, to say the least. But then, at long last, there it was. 110 seconds of pure joy. Surrounded by about two hours of, well, the sort of indescribable train wreck that the MTV VMA’s has become. A brief reunion. But well worth the wait.
