Sleepy’s Business Analyst Joseph Badamo of Massapequa and HR Intern Kristen Klein of North Babylon joined 75 colleagues to raise funds by forgoing the comfort of a mattress for cardboard on pavement in the parking lot of the Hicksville mattress company’s headquarters and distribution center. More than $131,000 was raised for Covenant House at the August 6th event to help provide food, clothing, shelter, medical care and housing
for hundreds of homeless youth. “This is the type of event that literally saves lives,” said Covenant House President Kevin Ryan. As part of the night’s program, young people from Covenant House met with and spoke to Sleepy’s employees. “It was truly our privilege. It has joined us all together and I know that every Sleep Out participant has been forever touched by this life-changing event,” said David Acker, Sleepy’s President and CEO.

have even bigger plants than the one I currently reside with, or maybe a castle… or a seashell to sleep in… the possibilities are endless. My one gripe is that, after weeks of this birthday talk, there was no cake – not even a cupcake, a cookie, a crumb… nothing. I thought I was finally going to sample a morsel when the human’s “Mommy” came over and tempted me with a Flying Saucer ice cream sandwich. How yummy those chocolate crumbs looked. But, alas, the rogue flake was snatched from my waiting jaws. What a tease. That aside, the day was very enjoyable, with much
I’m baaaaack! The human is busy putting the finishing touches on Seasons™ Magazine this week, so she asked me to fill in yet again. From what I’ve heard, readers absolutely loved my last column and have been writing in regularly to check on my wellbeing. Thanks for the love, and all the “half-birthday” wishes. So how does it feel to celebrate six months in the bowl, you ask? Not too shabby. I received my very first birthday present in the form of a gift card to Pet Smart, and the human says I can pick out anything I want. I’ll have to give it some thought. I hear they
singing and celebrating in honor of me and all my finned glory. And well it should have been. I am, after all, the most lively addition to that drab little apartment, if I do say so myself. I even complement the throw pillows and accents. I am, to put it quite simply, the finest accessory in the place. I suppose I should also note that my milestone was shared by the human – something about turning 33 I think. That seems like an awfully big number. Maybe that’s why she’s so tall. Such are some of the thoughts I ponder as I swim my daily 437 laps around the bowl… ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, signing off.

Secretariat won the Belmont stakes by a record time of 2:24, compared to American Pharoah’s time of 2:26.65, which places Pharoah 6th in Belmont Stakes history for fastest times. Lifeguard Honored
Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Tom Donnelly and Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma to present local lifeguard Andrew Morrison with the Town of Babylon’s Heroism Award – the highest honor awarded to residents.
After seeing a car collide with a child on a bicycle outside of the Sawyer Avenue pool in West Babylon, Morrison hopped over the fence to help those injured by the accident. Morrison then went back to the pool to grab the defibrillator in order to help the injured
eleven-year-old boy until paramedics arrived. The boy was transported to Stony Brook Hospital where he was treated for injuries. Supervisor Schaffer and members of the Town Board applauded Andrew for his life saving actions.

Victoria Bonavita, age 11, recently traveled to the historic Saratoga Racetrack in upstate NY for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interview 93 year old Penny Chenery, the owner of the Triple Crown winner and the world’s most amazing horse - Secretariat. Ms. Chenery was the subject of the popular Disney movie “Secretariat” that beautifully tells the story of her life with her amazing horse. Secretariat won the 1973 Triple Crown by an incredible 31 lengths with a world record time that has never been approached to this day. The interview took place at the historic Saratoga Racetrack on the day of the Whitney. After the interview, Victoria shared with Ms. Chenery a portrait of Secretariat that her Great Grandfather Joe Bonavita painted nearly 40 years ago. Ms. Chenery later honored the painting by adding her signature to it.

To welcome the district’s newest faculty members to the golden eagle family, West Babylon hosted its annual new teacher orientation. For two days in August, the new teachers met with central office administrators, where they learned about the district’s expectations and policies, the observation process, mentoring, curriculum, instruction and student assessment, certification updates and other management tools. Additionally, the new teachers met with the West Babylon Teachers Association and visited each of their assigned buildings and classrooms.
