Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker and Licensed Cosmetologist, whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: seniors at home, the home confined, hospice, sober houses and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space, and she incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Another unique niche that her traveling salon taps into is serving those who may have specific allergies or reactions to different products used in salons. Beneficiaries of the event include the Long lsland Children’s Museum, Children’s Medical Fund of New York, Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank, and the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals [SPCA]. “This is a great company with dedicated employees who care about our customers and our
community,” said Dan Eichhorn, president & COO, PSEG Long Island. “Together, we raised more than $17,000 in registration and donations to support four great local charities. Beginnings Birthdays are beginnings. This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me. This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend. Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Time, as we know, is one of life’s most precious commodities. As much as we would like to believe there will always be another chance to embark on a particular journey
or pursue a particular dream, the simple fact is that we can never be certain. The time is now, always. I have countless fond memories of my years working here at the old “South Bay” paper that I grew up reading, which I will touch on in more detail as the weeks progress. For now, though, suffice it to say that I am extremely grateful for the chance I was given to show my worth as a fresh-faced college graduate all those years ago. What began as a first step to “get a foot in the door” turned into a huge portion of my career, during which I was able to grow and flourish. My nearly 700 In Step columns stand as the biggest testament to the incredible support I have received from my co-workers, family and friends - and, perhaps most importantly, from those readers who have turned into loyal followers and fans. You have all come along for this journey, week after week, and for that I am forever thankful. Milestones have come and gone, as the columns have accumulated and the memories have been stored away for safekeeping between the lines of type. Along the way, the
particular numbers have gotten miscalculated and misplaced; but now, as I approach the final stretch, I felt an official “count” was in order. To my surprise - and delight, given how I began this particular selection, I will finish my tenure here with precisely 681 columns - my birthdate {8/16} “boxed,” if you will, for those familiar with gambling terminology. A fitting end, if you ask me. And with that, one more column in the books, three remaining - I would like to ask you, readers, for your feedback on what have been some of your favorites through the years, the topics and tales that stood above the rest. Your input has always been appreciated, and has been noted in many of my narratives over time. The stories may have been my own, but the writing was always for you. I look forward to reading your thoughts, and to taking you on my journey as I continue to contribute columns from time to time to my own personal website, SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. ’Til next time, may tomorrow’s birthday be just the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently announced nearly 900 students participated in Suffolk County’s Summer Youth Employment Program, an increase of approximately 100 students from the previous year due to additional funding provided by New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to divert at-risk youth from gang activity.
The Summer Youth Employment Program has been in existence for over 50 years in Suffolk County and provides economically disadvantaged and at-risk youth from across the county with first-time work experience. “It is critical that we keep our students engaged during the summer months and provide them with the tools necessary to succeed,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “This program allows participants to not only earn a wage but to gain experience to put on a resume, develop a strong work ethic and desire to succeed, and attain skills that will prepare them for joining the workforce once their education is completed. I applaud Governor Cuomo for his leadership and providing the additional funding necessary to be able to serve a greater number of students.” New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance Commissioner Samuel D. Roberts said: “Through Governor Cuomo’s leadership, the state has taken a dynamic approach to combatting gang violence across the state, especially on Long Island, by providing at-risk youth with the opportunities and supportive services they need to succeed. I applaud the Governor and my partners on the local level on prioritizing this initiative and giving children of Long Island a chance at a better tomorrow.” Suffolk County Legislator Monica Martinez said: “As a Suffolk County Legislator, it is my pleasure to not only support but continue
expanding the summer youth employment program. As adults, we need to provide our youth with an opportunity to work so they may build valuable skills, essential employment experience, and develop a sense of professionalism to propel them into being productive members of society. The summer youth employment program not only gives students the understanding and value of money, but it also gives them a sense of what it means to go out and work on a daily basis and to take care of one’s self and family.” Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education, Brentwood Union Free School District said: "These summer jobs represent more than a paycheck for our youth; they represent a chance to learn important career skills, explore new fields, give back to their community and save for school supplies. We are thankful that the Governor and County Executive have continued to invest in our students by creating more opportunities for our young people to earn while they learn during the summer months." The Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs received $1.6 million in funding from New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to help run the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). Summer Youth Employment Continued From 14 Andrew M. Cuomo’s multi-agency plan to reduce gang violence and divert at risk youth away from gang activity. The supplemental funding allowed the program to serve 76 additional youth participants. The additional jobs for at risk youth focused on the communities of Wyandanch, Brentwood and Bellport.
The purpose of the Summer Youth Employment Program is to provide young adults from economically disadvantaged homes and at risk youth, ranging in age from 14 to 21, with the tools and framework necessary for success in their future career paths. This year the program has employed 888 young adults from all across the County. The young workers are working at
75 different worksites including school districts, not for profit organizations and County agencies. The youth workers are working in various seasonal positions such as custodial aides, camp counselors, food service aides, clerical aides and teacher aides. All of the youth working are paid $11 an hour and work 25 hours per week. This year the program runs from July 2nd, 2018
to August 17th, 2018, with Brentwood School District being the exception, running from June 25th, 2018 to August 10th, 2018. Applications for the program open at the end of April and applications are readily available for eligible students at various school districts and the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs. In order to be eligible
for the Summer Youth Employment Program, a participant’s family income must be below the 200% federal poverty level. Automatic eligibility is given to families collecting any sort of Public Assistance including cash grant, food stamps, Medicaid, SSI or HEAP. Out of the 888 youth employed, 772 jobs were created through the summer Temporary
Assistance To Needy Family (TANF) program, 76 jobs were created through the Governor’s Office for Gang Prevention, and 40 jobs were created through the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA). Two wartime veterans were recognized for their military service and gifted with vehicles donated by GEICO Insurance Company and enhanced by The Collision Centers of New York. The two veterans were honored at the Long Island Ducks Baseball Stadium during the 6:35 p.m. game on August 4th 2018 during the annual Military Appreciation Night. Local Suffolk County residents, US Navy Veteran Christopher Russel, and US Marine Veteran, Mark Davis were struggling to do their daily tasks without a vehicle. Getting to work, going to doctor’s appointments, seeing family and having the freedom they deserve was difficult without a working vehicle. Mr. Davis and Mr. Russel were each given a vehicle at the Long Island Ducks Game during the 6th inning where fans and spectators rose and gave the two veterans a standing ovation during the presentation of the keys. Mr. Davis who was nominated by the
Veterans of Foreign War received a 2014 Toyota Corolla and said after the ceremony, “I just can’t stop smiling, thank you so much.” The Economic Opportunity Council -Suffolk, nominated Mr. Russel in hopes the vehicle would help him cut down on his two-hour commute
to work on his bike. He was gifted a 2009 Honda CRV. The cars were donated through the National Auto Body Council’s (NABC) Recycle Rides Program, which ensures deserving citizens without safe and operational vehicles have

Assemblywoman Christine Pellegrino announced that the North Babylon and West Islip public libraries will receive $90,000 in state aid. “Public libraries are crucial resources for our communities,” said Assemblywoman Pellegrino, who taught reading in Baldwin public schools for over 18 years. “They not only provide access to books, online resources and vital services like classes and job search assistance, but they also
help shape our lives. Libraries foster a love of reading and learning at a young age, and continue to be a resource throughout our lives. This significant boost in funding will help these community hubs thrive for years to come.” The funding provides $15,000 for North Babylon Public Library to create additional parking spaces and $75,000 for West Islip Public Library to add a new instructional room and reading space. “These new areas

addition to his sure-to-bedelicious recipes, Schaudel is going to mix a signature cocktail created with honey from Homecoming Farm’s hives. “We are grateful for Tom’s generosity and honored to have him play such an integral role in our celebration,” says Elizabeth Keihm, Homecoming Farm’s Executive Director. “Cocktails in the Cloister will also include live music and a gorgeous setting that most Long Islanders have never experienced.” This event is made possible by the gracious generosity of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville as it will be held in their beautiful Cloister Garden and Rosary Hall Chapel. The Chapel was built in 1878 based on 13th-century German architecture and the 1992 restoration brought back the beauty of its stained-glass windows and cathedral wood ceiling. The Cloister Garden, located directly next to the Chapel, was built so the sisters could experience
and enjoy being outside while remaining in the Cloister. “Our guests at the event will be transformed to another time, a simpler time, as they enter the Chapel and see the colors in the garden,” says Keihm. Homecoming Farm, Long Island’s first Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and NOFA NY Certified Organic farm, is located on the land of the Sisters of St. Dominic and is a Sponsored Ministry of the Congregation. The money raised at “Cocktails in the Cloister” will support all the work of Homecoming Farm, including its educational programming and its commitment to providing beautiful, certified organic, locally grown, fresh food to The Interfaith Nutrition Network (The INN). A Long Island resident and champion, with many successful restaurants in both Nassau and Suffolk counties including Jewel, Alure, and Kingfish Oyster Bar, Schaudel offers his support to many nonprofits across Long Island. “I’m happy to participate at an event celebrating an organization that keeps it home-grown on Long Island,” says Schaudel.
