As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, brieﬂy, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the ﬂuffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous

musings on life, and people; random rants and reader feedback. But among the hundreds were some solid accounts of current events, heartfelt profiles of loved ones, and momentous occasions in my life. And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.

It is, mostly, a project for me – a labor of love encompassing all those hobbies which I hold dear. Of course, if and when it all comes together, I would love to share it with my family and friends, and readers, if they would care to revisit this abridged anthology. In the interim, I welcome any feedback and suggestions those readers might care to offer – favorite columns, stories that stood out over the years, topics you would like to see covered in the coming weeks… anything at all. Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory recently presented a proclamation to Wyandanch High School graduate Kerith Paschall congratulating him on his selection as the recipient of the 2016 John C. Carter Sr. Memorial Scholarship. Sponsored by the

Suffolk County Police Athletic League (PAL), the scholarship was created in 2015 to honor the legacy of John C. Carter, Sr. one of Suffolk County’s first African-American police officers. A graduate of Wyandanch High School and a boxing coach for the PAL, Carter recruited at-risk youth to box with

him at the PAL facility in Brentwood. “As a police officer, John Carter fought crime, but as a mentor he worked to prevent it,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “His legacy lives on through this scholarship, which will help this outstanding young man attend college.”

Red Mango Franchising Company, LLC. a Dallas, TX-based company and parent of Red Mango Yogurt Café and Juice Bar, is donating its North Babylon franchise to Easter Seals New York (ESNY) as part of its national initiative to encourage veterans franchise ownership and specifically to support Easter Seals New York’s veterans entrepreneurial training and internship initiative. A ribbon cutting ceremony of the newlyacquired Red Mango store, located in the Sunset Plaza Shopping Center at 1184 Deer Park Avenue in North Babylon, took place on July 26th. Representatives of Easter Seals New York, a subsidiary of Fedcap Rehabilitation Services, Red Mango, and The Town of Babylon were on hand for the occasion. “This is an extraordinary opportunity for the veterans we serve in the

Long Island area,” said Joe Giannetto, Chief Operating Officer of Fedcap Rehabilitation Services and Easter Seals New York. “Through this donation, we will be able to set-up entrepreneurial training and internship programs on Long Island designed specifically for transitioning veterans who have an interest in owning and managing their own business. This Red Mango store will also be used as an extension of our Culinary Arts training program, and provide employment and training opportunities for people with disabilities.” The Red Mango North Babylon store has been operating since 2011 and enjoys an annual gross sales revenue of $465K. Red Mango Franchising Company plans to hand over the store, which cost in excess of $400,000 to build, with a zero balance, waiving all franchise fees, including

royalties and advertising normally associated with a franchise’s transfer of ownership. “We wanted to provide the opportunity for Easter Seals New York to create a thriving enterprise without debt or encumbrances,” said Craig Erlich, Chief Operating Officer of Red Mango. “We are committed to an ongoing relationship with ESNY and will provide ongoing operational assistance and marketing support to the site after the transfer. We want to help Easter Seals make this project a national model for veteran support. And we chose Easter Seals New York because of the strength of its veterans related programming as well as its affiliation with Fedcap Rehabilitation Services, a national nonprofit whose mission is to create opportunities for people with barriers to achieve economic independence.”

New Director

The Babylon School District is proud to announce that David Dileo has been appointed the new District Director of Technology and Accountability. Dileo comes to the district from the Tuckahoe School District, where he taught a wide range of technology courses and was instrumental in the development

of new technological initiatives. While teaching in Tuckahoe, Dileo introduced the district’s pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students to modern technologies including 3D printing, alternative energy sources and design and manufacturing. Additionally, within his administrative capacity, Dileo worked to develop a

three-year technology plan and implemented a oneto-one computing device initiative. Prior to his educational career in Tuckahoe, Dileo taught high school technology and worked as a teaching assistant in the Long Beach School District from 2002-2009 and taught high school technology in Phoenix, Arizona for a year. Dileo holds a bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University, a master’s degree in administration from Grand Canyon University of Phoenix, Arizona and a master’s degree in computers in education from Long Island University.
