The guest judge was Diane Romanello, a selftaught artist known for her scenic paintings characterized by beauty and romance in the natural world. On hand were Town of Babylon Councilman Antonio Martinez, Councilman Thomas Donnelly and BACCA President Shawn Cullinane to present awards to the deserving and talented artists. At this time last year, I was in the midst of an eightday tour of Ireland with 13 members of my family. And today, thanks to the wonders of a clever little app called “Timehop,” I am able to relive each day of that memorable vacation via the handful of photos I posted on Facebook throughout the journey. And they say too much sharing is bad! Of course, this is but a small sampling of the nearly 1,000 pictures I snapped over the course of the week, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. Seeing as I
am slightly obsessed with finding random scenes and candid shots to capture on a daily basis, you can just imagine how thrilled I was to explore one of the most beautiful lands abroad. Under any circumstances, it qualified one of the greatest experiences of my life. Coupled with the fact that it marked my first time on a plane and my first journey out of the country, well, that just added to the highlight reel. Considering that, prior to this, I had never ventured beyond the span of states between Vermont and Virginia, it was quite a momentous occasion. This past Christmas, I

This summer, Sheriff DeMarco will accompany Judge Camacho on a tour of Suffolk’s youth bureaus to learn more about the services available in each community. “Through his initiatives focusing on adolescent offenders, Sheriff DeMarco has proven that he is a leader in confronting the challenges facing our county’s juvenile justice system, and I am pleased to work with him in reaching out to our townships to coordinate local efforts to make sure that we, as a community who cares about our children, keep

About Sheriff DeMarco and the Youth Reentry Task Force The County Sheriff has been at the forefront of a national trend towards developing effective inmate rehabilitation programs and coordinating community-based services for individuals reentering our communities after
spending time in jail. Due in part to these efforts, there has been a significant decrease in the county jail population since he first took office. In 2005, the daily jail population averaged close to 2000 inmates, and now that figure is less than 1400. In 2011, Sheriff DeMarco launched the Youth Tier and Youth Reentry Task Force Initiative to improve outcomes for incarcerated youth in the county jails,
and the award-winning program has become a national model in the field of corrections. The Sheriff’s Youth Reentry Task Force, which has grown to more than 40 members from the fields of mental health, education, government and corrections, has played an integral role in the program’s success. In June 2014, he was appointed by the Suffolk County Executive to be the Chairman of the
County’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC). The primary purpose of the CJCC is to reduce crime and recidivism by promoting communication, collaboration, education, system-wide coordination, and decision-making among local juvenile and adult criminal justice agencies and local government, resulting in increased public safety for all of Suffolk County.
Jared Farmer, PhD, an Associate Professor of History at Stony Brook University, is the 2014 recipient of the Hiett Prize in the Humanities, a national honor awarded by The Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture. The award recognizes scholars devoted to the humanities in the early stages of their careers whose

A prolific writer and educator at Stony Brook, Farmer is an environmental historian with special expertise in the American West. He will receive the Hiett Prize and give a lecture on his scholarship at a luncheon at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas on November 12th. “Jared brings to light the hidden histories of landscapes and habitats and the ways human beings interact with them,” said Dr. J. Larry Allums, Executive Director of the Dallas Institute. “His still-unfolding work in a relatively new field of the humanities is of such a high order that it promises to become a model for others who will follow him.” “I’m honored to receive this recognition of my work,” said Farmer. “My area of scholarship overlaps with landscape history and cultural geography, but my career project is larger. I want to help people see connections between local landscapes and planetary processes.” Farmer has completed two books in his time at Stony Brook: On Zion’s Mount: Mormons, Indians, and the American Landscape (Harvard, 2008), which won five prizes, including the Francis Parkman Prize from the Society of American Historians for best-written non-fiction book on an American theme, and Trees in Paradise: A California History (Norton, 2013), which received a John Brinckerhoff Jackson Book
Prize from the Foundation for Landscape Studies. He frequently gives guest lectures and radio interviews. His essays and reviews have appeared in publications such as Science, Environmental History, Reviews in American History, High Country News, Western American Literature, and Religion Dispatches. Currently, Farmer is working on two book projects: Ancient Trees in Modern Times (a history of the long search for the world’s oldest living thing, and a meditation on the future of long-lived trees in the Anthropocene), and The Aerial View (a global study of aerial photography, aerial surveillance, satellite imagery, and remote sensing). Farmer earned a BA from Utah State University, an MA from the University of Montana and a PhD from Stanford University. He has been the recipient of fellowships from the Stanford Humanities Center, the HuntingtonUSC Institute on California and the West, the National Humanities Center, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Tanner Humanities Center at the University of Utah. The opposite of a lifetime achievement award, the Hiett Prize seeks to encourage future leaders in the humanities by recognizing their early accomplishments and potential and assisting their ongoing work through a cash award of $50,000.

the chance, an opportunity to go away during the summer.” He added, “The primary objective is to create a positive interaction between the kids attending camp and the officers who participate in the camp programs. We have found from experience that the kids develop a renewed respect and understanding for the men and women who enforce our laws. The officers become their friends for a week.” Throughout the weeklong stay, the children observe special exhibits and demonstrations presented by Sheriffs’ Offices from across the state. Included in these presentations are boat and bike safety programs, law enforcement equipment and technical demonstrations, archery competitions for accuracy and even a talent show just for fun. Upon completion, all children are awarded a diploma for their participation in a program of “Good Citizenship and Law Enforcement Studies.”

This year the camp will accommodate over 900 deserving boys and girls from across New York State. Scholarship Winner
Sarah Lewis of North Babylon is a winner of the DCI Scholarship Program, sponsored by Dialysis Clinic, Inc. Sarah is the child of Carrell Lewis. She is majoring in Fashion Merchandise at Fashion Institute of Technology. The following is a partial
list of Sarah’s school and community activities: Choir Track and Field Tennis Honor Roll Tri-M Society The DCI Scholarship Program was created to benefit the children of Dialysis Clinic, Inc. employees based on belief in the importance of education. Five recipients were chosen to receive scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,500. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Dialysis Center, Inc. is a nonprofit organization with 72 clinics in 16 states. DCI also operates three
procurement divisions, a medical research division, a preventative medicine division, a laboratory division and a supply division. The DCI Scholarship Program is independently managed by Career Opportunities Through Education, Inc., a nonprofit scholarship service organization with an office in Audubon, New Jersey. All phases of the scholarship competition are independently managed by Scholarship Managers. SM is a national scholarship service organization with extensive experience in the design and management of scholarship programs.

Saints Cyril and Methodius (SSCM) graduating Eighth Grader, Matteo Masotti was all smiles on graduation day and enjoyed a day of
relaxation with friends and family after earning a bevy of well-deserved honors and awards. An active hockeyplayer and scholar alike, Matteo is proof that being well-rounded in both academics and athletics is not only possible, but profitable. The young Mr. Masotti had the honor of accepting a Pope John Paul Scholarship for his activity in Community Service and his keen writing skills. In addition, he’d earned a Senior Citizens
Scholarship and a Parent Association Scholarship, both based on his extracurricular involvement and service to the school, the church, and the surrounding community. Matteo will be attending St. John the Baptist in West Islip this Fall. With a Science Achievement Award, a Shakespeare Ensemble Award, and an Award from the Distinguished Scholars Program under his belt, Matteo’s future is looking bright indeed.

Memorial Triangle Dedicated Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with fellow Town Board members and community leaders to dedicate the patch of land located at Mount Avenue and Essex Street in North Babylon in honor of the late Alice Cone, longtime president of the Belmont Lake Civic Association. More than 60 individuals
came out for the dedication ceremony, including many of Alice’s friends and family members. At the ceremony, local officials such as Supervisor Schaffer and Assemblyman Robert Sweeney addressed the crowd and spoke of Alice’s devotion to her community. The beautification of the patch of land between
Mount Avenue and Essex Street, now known as “Alice T. Cone Memorial Triangle,” was one of the many projects that Alice had worked tirelessly on to help better her community. Alice T. Cone died March 19th, 2014 from complications of pancreatic cancer at the age of 74.

This year’s recipient of the Paul S. physicians graduated in Good Samaritan’s 2014 residency program. They represented the fields of Pediatrics, Podiatry, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Catholic Health Services’ Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer Patrick M. O’Shaughnessy, DO, was keynote speaker at this year’s graduation ceremony. He congratulated the newest physicians, “stressing to
remember the oath of medicine you took today by always putting the patient first.” In addition, Attending of the Year awards were given to Howard Balbi, MD, pediatric infectious diseases, by pediatric residents; Amityville Pulmonology group by family medicine residents; Mark Pilliterri, DO, by obstetric residents and Vito Rizzo, DPM, by podiatry residents.
The 7th Annual Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride was held in the Town of Babylon recently, where over 1,100 riders took part in a 25 mile bicycle ride throughout the Town to raise over $100,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project. Over 60 wounded service members took part in the ride – some of whom used state of the art adaptive hand cycles, tricycles and bicycles. Among the hundreds of riders was Town Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon, who recently retired from the United States Army Reserves after 30 years of service both home and abroad, as well as
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez. Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer welcomed riders at a brief ceremony that was held in front of Town Hall in Lindenhurst, where remarks were also delivered by County Executive Bellone, Soldier Ride Director Dan Schnock and Army Specialist Jason Braase. The 7th Annual Soldier Ride officially began at approximately 9:30 a.m., when the riders disembarked from Town Hall and made their way through the 25 mile route, passing notable landmarks like Old Town
Hall in Babylon Village and crossing over the iconic Robert Moses Bridge for the ride’s last stretch to Overlook Beach, where they were treated to a barbeque with refreshments. The Wounded Warrior Project provides services to service members, in both the United States and internationally, who have been injured in combat and works to raise awareness regarding issues that affect them as they continue to adjust to their new life. The Town of Babylon has partnered with the Wounded Warrior Project since 2008 and has raised over $600,000 for the organization.

Habitat Groundbreaking
Celebrity Golf Classic Held
The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) recently hosted its 29th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The golf outing was the foundation’s largest fundraising event of the year. Hundreds of supporters played golf and attended the evening festivities. The Marty Lyons Foundation was founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” The MLF grants wishes to children, between the ages of three and seventeen, who have terminal or lifethreatening illnesses, and is the only nonprofit in the nation to offer second wishes. Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million
free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free
credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.
