Everyone you meet is ﬁghting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always. So the saying goes, and so the sentiment is reinforced every time news is received of the untimely passing of a loved one, friend, or even a celebrity or complete stranger. You just never know what goes on beneath the façade. Especially in this day and age of social media and what some might consider too much “sharing,” it is striking to note that the public profile rarely matches the internal struggle for many. As I write these words, many of my fellow classmates from the Lindy High Class of 2000 have gathered, yet again, to say goodbye to one of our own, gone too soon. Over the

last week, the outpouring of love and fond memories has been overwhelming, in the form of old photographs dug out from the archives, funny anecdotes shared and heartfelt remembrances penned of a person who, quite simply, had the ability to light up any gathering with his positive energy and smile. In this time of sadness and reﬂection, it has been said that the best thing anyone can do – the only thing, really – is to take that sentiment and use it to be more considerate of others, their feelings, their unknown struggles… to appreciate those around you and to savor the moments you are fortunate to share together, as you simply never know when those moments will become nothing more than a distant memory. In the years that have passed since high school graduation,

we have all gone our separate ways, some to explore the world, others to settle down with families and some to simply find themselves in the endless quest for happiness and fulfillment. Whatever the journey, those childhood and adolescent friendships that blossomed during our formative years have endured in one form or another – even if only to serve as the basis for those fond memories that shaped so many milestones along the way. And here we are, fifteen years later… a class whose roots remain firmly planted – on the playgrounds of our elementary schools, in the hallways of our high school, on the streets that we all called home at one time. Such a bond will never be broken. And at times likes these, it only grows stronger.

As the result of a grassroots effort led by North Babylon High School alumni Liana Neidig and Kristin Corragio, the school’s little theatre was dedicated to retired theatre teacher David Signorelli. A plaque commemorating the dedication was unveiled at a special ceremony attended by both former and current members of the Board of Education, including Bob Scheid, Barbara Leun, Barbara Ferguson, James Shinnick and Matthew Lucchetti.

The program also featured the presentation of a film constructed by the alumni that celebrated the career of Mr. Signorelli, and a reception hosted by the Performing Arts Support Association (PASA) of North Babylon. Mr. Signorelli participated in a ribbon cutting that made the dedication official. Mr. Signorelli taught theatre in the district for 34 years and retired in June 2014. During his time, he directed more than 80 shows, had one student earn the prestigious

Gershwin Award in 2011, and also earned several Town of Babylon Youth Theatre Awards for his productions. He also coauthored the New York State Theatre Curriculum. Theatre teacher and director Lisa Drance, the Scheid family, PASA, the Board of Education and the alumni all collaborated to honor Mr. Signorelli. The dedication ceremony served to bring the community together to celebrate a most-deserving member of the theatre department’s rich history.

At its July reorganization meeting, North Babylon School District’s new Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach was sworn in, and the Board of Education reappointed Janet Meyerson and Sal Levanti to their posts

as president and vice president, respectively. In addition, Matthew Lucchetti was introduced as a new trustee on the Board. Eschbach, Meyerson, Levanti and Lucchetti all took their oaths of office before a district attorney.

Board Recognition The meeting, a precursor to the 2015-2016 school year, served to welcome Eschbach as leader of its schools and gave the Board an opportunity to thank the community for its support as it reorganized.

LIGHTHOUSE VISIT - The Babylon United Methodist Church Nursery School visited the Fire Island Lighthouse this past April. “This field trip was important step for our four-year-old classes who are going to Kindergarten in the fall. We were able to reinforce our lessons on bus safety, visit a historic landmark, and learn about life on Fire Island years ago,” said administrator Lisa Murray. “We are grateful to the Fire BOARD RECOGNITION - North Babylon Board of Education: Trustee Matthew Island Lighthouse volunteers who provided age appropriate demonstrations for our Lucchetti, trustee Bob Scheid, Vice President Sal Levanti; trustee Heather Rowland, children.” trustee Geri-Ann McNamee, President Janet Meyerson, trustee Barbara Ferguson.
