This event helped to raise over $20,000, which will support breast cancer services and programs at Stony Brook, adding to the upwards of $180,000 raised by past runs.

The YMCA-LI announced today, beginning Thursday, July 21st and running through Sunday, August 21st, all local branches will participate in an island-wide Road to the Olympics. The campaign will celebrate the multiple sports and activities offered at the Y in the tradition of the Olympic Games. Additionally, the campaign will celebrate the spirit of building local athletes of all ages, levels and abilities at YMCA-LI facilities, from improving skills and coordination to developing positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork. The monthlong event invites YMCA members to share their fitness milestones and achievements with @ ymcali “#YLIolymPICS” on social media. “Our island-wide YMCA community encompasses a wide range of athletes, all of whom are winners in their own way! Whether they celebrate running a half-mile further or try a new group exercise class, these are moments they should challenge and celebrate successes,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island. “Through this campaign, we want to encourage all of our members to share their milestones with us so we can share in the joy of health and wellness.” In hopes of encouraging Y members to reach and share their fitness goals, the month-long event will culminate with a special raffle opportunity. Pencil It In By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Pencil it in. Erase it. And repeat. Such has been the state of my calendar for the last several weeks. Months, even. I’m not sure when it became so difficult to plan things. Used to be a time when you could simply pick up the phone – yes, the actual phone – and call a friend to go to dinner, a movie, the beach, whatever. Chances are, you also needed to coordinate a ride to said destination from a parental unit; but still, somehow, you made it happen. Nowadays, such outings require about 30 days advance notice – and, even at that, will most likely be
rescheduled at least three times before materializing. For some reason, the more methods of communication available, the more difficult it has become to maintain contact. Actual, personal contact. Sending a text, only to have it halfheartedly acknowledged four days later, is not quite the same as catching up over drinks. Liking a Facebook status doesn’t indicate your genuine interest in another person’s life. Face-to-face conversation does. I have always been the type of person who tries to keep in touch, the one reaching out, making plans, coordinating… And I don’t mind it, mostly. But when it feels as though it’s becoming more of a chore
than anything, well, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate. Friendships, like the communication which they are based upon, are a twoway street. Summer is a perfect season to reconnect, to socialize, to reunite with those long-lost, or perhaps just slightly lapsed, acquaintances. School is out, work schedules tend to be more lax, vacations are planned… and more often than not, it winds up being worth the wait. If only it could be written in ink from day one.
