On July 25th, Mrs. Narrie Carter is turning 90 years young. She is a great great grandmother, whose children are acknowledging and celebrating her many years of gained experience and life lessons on July 26th with an intimate dinner at Rare 650 in Syosset. Mr. & Mrs. Carter were a young, handsome couple from Durham, North Carolina, born during the Great Depression. They met at a dance, fell in love and

traveled north, as many of their generation did, part of the great migration of many African Americans from south to north to seek economic growth and opportunity. Long Island, New York is where they ultimately buried their seeds of faith and hope, obtained stable employment at Pilgrim Psychiatric Hospital, and were able to accomplish their dream of buying land, later building their split level home to raise their second, younger set, of two boys and girl in Babylon Village. In fact, Mr. & Mrs. Carter were informed many years ago by the deceased Mayor of Babylon Village, Donald Conroy, that they were the first blacks to buy land and build a home in Babylon Village. Since Mr. Carter’s passing in 1989, the family home is still resided in by Mrs. Carter and several of her children. Her family wishes to express their honor, pride and respect for Mrs. Carter, who, along with her husband, made their dreams for their children’s futures a reality.

Holes For Hope is a fundraising event that raises money for North Shore Autism Circle and Autism Speaks that was conceived around a kitchen table almost five years ago when a group of friends came together to support one of their own, with the hope of raising awareness and funds in response to the impact that autism has had on the local North Shore community. “Friends Helping Friends” – the guiding principle at the very core of this charity event – strives to bring together the Long Island community with a common goal: helping all those impacted by a autism spectrum disorder. This group of friends took one simple idea, added a lot of hard work and determination, sprinkled in a healthy dose of friendship, laughter and love, and shook it well to create a wonderful charity event that has been labeled Holes For Hope. In just four short years of its existence, Holes for Hope has raised almost a half a million dollars in support of both national and local autism charities. The organizations that have been recipients of funds generated by Holes for Hope include Autism Speaks, Sid Jacobson JCC, Spectrum Designs, Nassau County Museum of Art, Community Mainstreaming Associates, Horseability, Camp Kehila, Be Your Best Sport Special Needs Sports Programs, and Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism, among others. In addition, three years ago, Holes For Hope created our “Friends Quilt” as the embodiment and symbol of the outing.

The Blanket By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I have a beach blanket; well, to be clear, it’s more of a moving blanket that has admirably served its purpose on the beach, the grass… pretty much anywhere it’s been needed over the last year and a half. Until last Monday. Last Monday, my friend and I decided to attend one of the many free summer concerts on the schedule this season at Massapequa’s John J. Burns Park. While the forecast called for rain and possible thunderstorms later in the evening, the concert remained set to go off. We arrived early, set up the aforementioned blanket and a couple of chairs, and waited. Light drizzle had begun to fall on and off at this point. Several local legislators appeared to make the

obligatory introductions on stage and stated that, due to the impending storms, the show would begin a bit earlier than scheduled. Perfect. Headliner Bret Michaels took the stage shortly after, and was greeted by an ecstatic crowd, most clutching their umbrellas in earnest, as the rain began to fall harder. About a half dozen songs in, the torrential downpour commenced. At that point, it became clear that, despite the best intentions, the show would simply not be able to go on. The house lights (or lampposts, as the case was) went up, the power to the jumbo screen was cut, and the crew desperately tried to cover the speakers and electronics as the mad dash to the parking lot began. Ah, but there still

remained the small matter of the blanket. The gigantic, now completely saturated, blanket, which now weighed approximately 50 lbs. as we attempted to roll it up and drag it to the parking lot – all the while trying to sidestep the massive mud puddles which had formed in a matter of minutes. As I contemplated chucking the entire thing into the nearest garbage pail, the absurdity of the whole scene suddenly struck me, and I became hysterical with laughter. “The next time they forecast ‘a chance’ of anything, let’s do ourselves a favor and leave the blanket in the trunk.” As I write this, four days later, the blanket remains draped over my deck, drying in the afternoon sun. It’s still a bit damp.

Charging Stations Stony Brook University will add six new electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) on main campus by this summer, bringing the total number of EVCS at on campus to 10. The new charging stations compliment the University’s four existing stations, which are located at the Advanced Energy Center in the Research and Development Park installed approximately three years ago. These stations are being added to support a growing number of students, faculty, staff and visitors who drive plug-in vehicles and are seeking energy resources while on campus. Each station will supply electricity to two parking spaces in the following parking lots; Stadium parking lot: Administration parking garage (on the 3rd level); Life Sciences lot; Heavy Engineering lot; and, near the Life Sciences 2 parking lot located off of Lake Drive. The existing

EVCS located in the Administration parking garage stations were provided to the University through Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 2013 Charge New York Initiative. The goal of the initiative is to create a statewide network of up to 3,000 public and workplace charging stations over the next five years and to put up to 40,000 plug-in vehicles on the road during that period. SBU charging station fee is $3 per hour, per space; instructions are located at the station, and all vehicles parked in an EVCS space must be charging. “The new charging stations have been installed in close proximity to the Academic Mall, thereby encouraging our community to utilize plugin vehicles which have less of an impact on the natural environment,” explained James Ambroise, SBU Transportation & Parking Site Manager. SBU plans to evaluate electric vehicle charging

station use and consider additional locations, as warranted by demand and University feedback. For example, on Long Island, the AMI is $105,000 for a family of four in Nassau County. Property owners who have not started poststorm repairs are also given preference.
