My Secret Life With all the fuss over this new film, “The Secret Life of Pets,” I thought it only appropriate to provide my own account of this socalled hidden existence we all allegedly cultivate when our humans are away. First off, (spoiler alert) I have never taken to the sewers or made my way to Brooklyn looking for adventure. No, my exploration is confined to the four corners of my aquatic kingdom, where I examine every leaf of my plant and inspect each piece of gravel daily; you know, just to see if anything has changed overnight. While my human feeds me twice a day, I must say the time between meals could be a bit closer. What she does for all those hours in between, I’ll never know. I’ve often thought
I would like to tag along, but the pet store told her I might be susceptible to something called “motion sickness” in the car. Since I can’t go along, I do my best to entertain her whenever she enters the room, in the hope that she might linger just a bit longer. I perform my tricks for her, everything from diving for flakes the moment she drops them in the tank to giving little “love pecks” on her finger when she even so much as touches the water. Sometimes it works, and she’ll stay and have her cereal while perched on the counter next to me; but most times, it’s just some nonsense about “running late” and “see you later Buddy.” The only quality time my human and I have is when she’s busy cooking.

Then, I have a front row seat to all the pretty preparation. Honestly, my life is fairly dull and repetitive, not exactly the stuff of fine cinema. Well, except for that one time with Squeegee the Snail – but I digress. Mostly, it’s a lot of laps and fanning my fins to see if they’ve grown back sufficiently (still a work in progress, but coming along nicely). Too bad I couldn’t tag along for the movie. Maybe I’ll catch it on TV when it comes around. Hope my human still has that portable bowl for me to travel in. I do miss sitting on the coffee table watching the ball game… and sitting on the dining room table watching everyone eat… Boy, I do a lot of watching, don’t I? Maybe they should make a movie about that.

Senator Michael Venditto recently teamed up with the Colette Coyne Melanoma Awareness Campaign (CCMAC) and the Town of Babylon to sponsor a free skin cancer screening program at Tanner Park in Copiague to help protect residents from skin cancer. “Getting screened is critically important to ensure that skin cancer is detected early and treated effectively. With people spending more and more time in the sun enjoying the summer, this program
gave them the opportunity to be safe and get screened. I thank CCMAC and the Town of Babylon for once again partnering with me to offer this important program,” said Senator Venditto. According to CCMAC, one in five people will be diagnosed with some type of skin cancer in their lifetime. Malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer, is the fastest growing cancer in America, claiming one life every hour. People of all ethnic backgrounds and races
can get skin cancer. One blistering sunburn during childhood or adolescence more than doubles melanoma risk later in life. CCMAC worked with Dr. Steve McClain of McClain Labs, Dr. Scott Flugman of Dermatology Associates of Huntington, Dr. Erin Schoor of NYU Langone Medical Group and the doctors from Stony Brook Hospital Dermatology Department to provide the free screenings to over 150 individuals.

New Principal
The Babylon School District appointed Travis Davey as the new principal of Babylon Elementary School, effective July 1st, 2016. Mr. Davey comes to the district from the South Country Central School District, where he served as principal since 2010. For the last two years, he worked as principal of Bellport Middle School and, prior to that, he served as principal of Brookhaven Elementary School. During his time in South Country, Mr. Davey oversaw the implementation of such programs as the Lucy Calkins Reading and
Writing Units of Study and the introduction of evidence-based socialemotional curriculum and mindfulness training. Furthermore, he worked to strengthen the hometo-school partnership through such initiatives as the Shared Decision Making Team and by creating end-of-unit writing celebrations in classrooms throughout the elementary school. Prior to his work in South Country, Mr. Davey worked as the assistant principal at St. Michael the Archangel School, located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Here he oversaw a student population spanning preschool to eighth grade and was an integral part of the building earning the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award in 2010. Throughout his career, Mr. Davey has been awarded a number of professional accolades, including a Regional Excellence in Teaching Award and
being nominated for Administrator of the Year by the Empire State School Administrators Association for three consecutive years. He holds two master’s degrees from the University of Notre Dame – a Master of Arts in Education in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts in Educational Administration. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Notre Dame in 2001. Aside from being an accomplished educator, Mr. Davey prides himself in being a devoted family man to his wife and four children.
