Hundreds of guests filled the bleachers at Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s Coach Walter F. Williams Football Field on the evening of June 22nd to recognize and congratulate the school’s graduating Class of 2018. After a welcoming introduction from Assistant Principal Jennifer Mangone, along with reflections TOP EAGLES - West Babylon’s Class of 2018 valedictorian Eric Donohue (left) and from representatives of the council, Babylon salutatorian Joseph Ronzetti at the commencement exercises on June 22nd. Photo student Junior-Senior High School courtesy of: West Babylon School District Principal Al Cirone welcomed all of the guests and congratulated the class for successfully closing the final chapter of their high school careers. The students and attendees were also treated to wonderful musical performances throughout the course of the evening, courtesy of the Babylon High School Band, Orchestra and Concert Chorus. If there is one thing we have all learned throughout our lives, it is that there are only so many aspects within our control; and even those few are questionable, at best. We can go through each day with a clear picture as to what we would like our life to be, but the reality is that this is the only true reality we know. The rest is mere wistfulness. for a moment and appreciate a sunrise, a sunset, a butterfly, a blossom … anything, really. My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the flesh, ever present. I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours. I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.

West Babylon School District’s Class of 2018 celebrated their commencement exercises on the evening of June 22nd on the football field of the Junior High School. Surrounded by friends, family, board of education members and district administrators, the students marched onto the field to “Pomp and Circumstance.” West Babylon Senior High School Principal Dr. Ellice Vassallo welcomed the students and audience to the ceremony. “This class has developed a balance artistically, musically, athletically and academically,” she said. “You have shown determination and you have started many new traditions. offered words of inspiration. “The future of this class is very bright,” he said. “Our graduating class possesses many traits and talents. We are a class of athletes, musicians, actors and artists. These gifts and talents will allow this class to provide historic transformations to the world.” Board of Education president Lucy Campasano spoke to the students about their accomplishments and all they have done for the community and school. “You have risen to every standard and surpassed all of our goals and expectations,” she said. “You are the reason we love this community and country. It has been our pleasure to watch you. Sometimes to watch you succeed and perhaps a few times to be there when you failed. But always to watch you grow.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly commended the students for their leadership and character during their time in West Babylon. “I am truly honored to be standing here as your superintendent to celebrate the significant achievements that end a chapter in your life and start an exciting new one,” she said. “I’ve seen, heard and witnessed so many of your accomplishments. You have all been amazing leaders in our school. As you all walk out and begin a new chapter, I ask you to continue to be resilient. Continue to have a vision, a goal and a drive to pursue those goals.” After a performance of the senior medley by the chorus, the band played the school’s song, “Like an Eagle.” Along with members of the board of education and district administrators, Dr. Vassallo presented the diplomas to each member of the Class of 2018. Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! On Sunday, August 12th, they are hosting their 2nd Underwater Beach Cleanup. This will be held at Centennial Beach in Port Jefferson starting at 9 a.m. If you love our oceans and want to help keep our coastlines clean, bring your friends and family to help clean up the beach. Also, if you are a certified scuba diver, you can bring your equipment and join those who will go below the surface and clean the beach. Lunch will be provided after the clean up, courtesy of Port Diver. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to

Last year, Legislator Anker hosted a summer concert in partnership with the Coram Civic Association and the Coram Fire Department in his honor. This year, the Coram Concert will be held on August 13 at 7 pm at the Coram Fire Department Substation located at Pine Road and Route 112, and will feature Southbound, Long Island’s classic rock and country band. In addition, a 5k race will be held by the Police Department in dedication to Tony and the Bocchimuzzo family. All money raised will go towards the Longwood Tony Bocchimuzzo Scholarship Fund. On Saturday, June 7th, Legislator Sarah Anker was honored to join the Bocchimuzzo family, elected officials, friends and colleagues at the renaming of the 9-1-1 Call Center in Yaphank, in honor of Anthony “Tony” Bocchimuzzo. Bocchimuzzo, who passed away in July of 2017 at the age of 49, one week before his 50th birthday, was an invaluable member of both the Longwood community, the Coram Fire Department and the Suffolk County Police Department. He had been a Suffolk Police Civilian Supervisor of the 911 dispatchers for 26 years, where he conducted trainings for new employees and acted as a communications liaison between the state and federal governments. While working for the Police Department, Bocchimuzzo was instrumental in compiling data for the ShotSpotter program, which uses acoustic equipment in high-crime areas to pinpoint gunfire and alert patrol officers. He also served as a volunteer firefighter in Coram for over 30 years, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant. “Tony was a remarkable person. Not only was he a dedicated father and husband, but he was a committed volunteer to his community as a member of the Coram Fire Department and the Longwood Civic Associations. As a communications specialist, he was that quiet voice behind the sound system

A three-year starter at Boston College, Apuzzo is the first BC Eagle to win the award in the history of the schools women’s lacrosse program. Sam led Boston College to an undefeated regular season and their second consecutive NCAA Championship appearance. Sam is the third in the nation in scoring and points scored, has 273 career points and, is well
