The Days You Remember By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

There’s something to be said for nostalgia, even the not-so-distant-past variety. I have a hard time viewing cultural happenings, music and movies from the 90’s as “classic” - however, when you realize that some of these momentous occasions are approaching their 15 and 20year anniversaries, well that gives things a whole new perspective. Recently, the National Geographic channel premiered a new miniseries focusing on this particular decade, causing many from my generation to take a step back and realize that some of those things that seemed like “just yesterday” in fact

occurred many yesterdays ago. Perhaps part of the reason behind this time lapse of sorts is the fact that many of my fellow late 20-somethings and early 30-somethings still live at home, in the same town in which they attended high school and football games, local bars and beaches, and continue to socialize with the same circle of close knit friends from their school days. Essentially, not much has changed – so it seems positively mind-blowing to think that nearly two decades have elapsed. Ah, but they have. And none of us is getting any younger in the process. A sobering thought, isn’t it? Of course, in reality,

much has changed. The world as a whole, to start, straight on down to the local neighborhood streets we used to casually stroll along. To think that reunions have come and gone, friends have married (and, in some cases divorced), and are in the process of raising children and buying homes of their own – “growing up,” as they say – well, it had to happen eventually. Personally, I enjoy a good trip down memory lane as much as the next person. It’s fun to reflect upon the people who have graced our lives, the person you were and the one you still hope to become. Nostalgia or no, there’s still plenty of time to rewrite the story along the way!

The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce it is hosting an exhibition of paintings/sculpture this August as part of the first annual “North Fork Annual,” a juried art exhibition that will

- is named in honor of Southold painter Thomas Currie-Bell (1873-1946). A native of Scotland who trained extensively in Great Britain, Currie-Bell came to America in 1929 and settled in Southold, from where he traveled up and down the east coast, painting portraits and local scenery. His wife, Ann Hallock CurrieBell, was the founder and first president of the Southold Historical Society, where a number of his paintings can be viewed. Artists from all over the east end of Long Island were invited to participate in the exhibition, as long as they either ‘resided on’ or ‘worked on’ the North Fork. Entries will be scrutinized by the two jurors; Sean Cleary, Chief Operating Officer of the well-respected Phillips Auction House of New York City; and Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society and author of several books and catalogs on the history and art of Long Island. Dale Lewis, Executive Director of Usdan Center, says of the new project, “We are enormously excited by this initiative which is enabling us to bring the arts into the lives of a new community of children. We are grateful to Mr. Albanese for making it possible.” At the helm of his family’s 64 year-old real estate development business, Russell Albanese has more than 30 years experience in planning, designing and constructing office and residential buildings, much of it focused on making those projects environmentally sustainable. The Albanese Organization built the country’s first certified green residential buildings in Battery Park City in 2003, and in 2008 the firm opened the 33-story Visionaire in Lower Manhattan, which garnered a Platinum LEED rating. The company also transformed the 110,000-square-foot office building at 1001 Franklin Ave. in Garden City, the first Long Island multitenant office building to be totally retrofitted for LEED certification. The new Wyandanch Youth Center Chorus is a children’s ensemble that has been created this year by Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. The program is one part of Usdan’s initiative to support arts education on Long Island and in the Boroughs. The Chorus presented its first concert on June 10th at the Wyandanch Family Life Center where the 50-member group, consisting of first to fifth graders, performed classical, Broadway, folk and contemporary pop music. Composers included Rodgers and Hammerstein, Woody Guthrie, Bobby McFerrin and Pharrell Williams. The choral director is Melody Hall, the Assistant Teacher for Usdan’s Junior Chorus. The accompanying pianist was Andres Maldonado. The Wyandanch Youth Center Chorus is a partnership of Usdan Center and the Family Life Center/Wyandanch Youth Center. It was established to give children a positive choral experience and since January, rehearsals have been held twice a week. The program is sponsored by Russell Albanese, a new member of Usdan Center’s Leadership Council and an award-winning “Green” real estate developer. Mr. Albanese is currently building Wyandanch Village, a major revitalization project in the area. In addition to his sponsorship of the Chorus, Albanese has underwritten

As West Babylon’s graduating Class of 2014 processed onto the field of the West Babylon Junior High School for the annual commencement exercises, they were serenaded by the ceremonial “Pomp and Circumstance,” as performed by the high school band, and cheered on by proud family members and friends. The exercises began with a greeting from Principal Dr. Ellice F. Vassallo, the Pledge of Allegiance led by National Honor Society President Alexandra Martocci, and performances of the national anthem and “God Bless America” by the band. In his opening remarks, Class of 2014 President John Modica encouraged his peers to never give up on themselves and to have confidence in their choices. “When you give up on yourself, you give up on all those who have supported you,” he said.

Salutatorian Julie Barrett defined the Class of 2014 as “remarkable for [its] differences and dedication” and encouraged her peers to keep laughter in their lives. Valedictorian Nicole Cutrone encouraged her peers to pursue something they love and remarked that her classmates’ experiences had been defined through the “many magical moments” they had experienced in high school that had helped them succeed. Superintendent of Schools Anthony Cacciola thanked the class for bringing pride to both the district and their parents. He encouraged the graduates to put life into perspective and appreciate what is truly important. “Life is measured by the moments that take your breath away,” he said. Board of Education President Diane Thiel noted that the visiting class of 1964 and the graduating

Leondardo and senior class co-presidents Casey Culkin and Emily Garren delivered their farewell addresses. “This graduation is an important milestone, but just one of many that will be available to you as a result of the education you’ve been provided by the wonderful teachers, administrator and support staff within the North Babylon School District,” said Mr. Klomp. “It is my sincere hope that as you leave us, you remember the lessons learned here at North Babylon High School. Please continue to strive for the ideals expressed in our high school crest and alma mater – truth, knowledge, unity and growth. I am confident that our collective future is in good hands.” Mrs. Godek said, “Today I choose to say to you – dare to dream. Anything is possible, believe in what makes you feel good, believe in what makes you

happy, and believe in your dreams and give them every chance to come true. For those of you who are willing to believe in your dreams and in yourself, life is a precious gift in which anything is possible.” During the ceremony, Board of Education President Janet Meyerson presented perfect attendance awards to seven individuals who attended school every day during their North Babylon careers. Students included Anthony Aiken, Neil Berger, Anthony Bieler, Todd Gonzalez, Marcell Nesbitt, Michael Pellicano and Elhum Saljooki. Following the presentation of diplomas by members of the Board, the reciting of the traditional graduation oath and the tossing of their caps, family and friends gathered on the high school football field to congratulate and celebrate the newest alumni of North Babylon High School.

Leading up to the final moments of their North Babylon educational careers, the students listened as they received words of advice from special guest Suffolk County Supervisor and North Babylon alumnus Steve Bellone, Superintendent of Schools Patricia E. Godek, Principal Jonathan Klomp and faculty speaker David Signorelli. Host A Fresh Air Child June 30th, 2014 marked the beginning of Fresh Air summer experiences for thousands of innercity children and their volunteer host families as The Fresh Air Fund kicked off its 138th summer of serving New York City children. By volunteering as a host family in Suffolk County, you can share the pure joys of summer with a Fresh Air child in your own backyard! The Fresh Air Fund is currently seeking more families to give inner-city children a Fresh Air experience this

summer. Fresh Air summers are filled with children running barefoot through the grass, gazing at starfilled skies or swimming for the first time. Each summer, over 4,000 inner-city children visit suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. “Being able to run around outside is a freeing experience for our Fresh

Air child. I still enjoy watching her face as she takes joy in the simple things, like roasting a marshmallow or jumping into the lake,” says a Fresh Air host mom. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-

time visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. In furtherance of that mission the Center also operated the Wyandanch Youth Center, with a variety of sports and social activities for children and their families. Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan. com), counts among its alumni actors Natalie Portman, Olivia Thirlby and Jackie Hoffman, and singers Jane Monheit and Mariah Carey. It has introduced the arts to more than 60,000 TriState Area children since its founding in 1968. The Center is open to all young people from age 6 to 18. No audition is needed for most programs – rather, admission is based on an expression of interest in the arts. Each summer, 1,600 students are transported to the

Center in air-conditioned buses each day. One-third of Usdan’s students attend on scholarship. Although the mission of the Center is for every child to establish a relationship with the arts, the unique stimulation of the Center has caused many to go on to arts careers. Alumni include members of Broadway shows and major music, theater, and dance ensembles such as the Boston Pops and the New York City Ballet. A special feature of each student’s program is the Center’s series of daily assemblies known as the Festival Concerts. These

are short educational performances by distinguished artist and by Usdan students as well. In addition to its regular programs, Usdan offers special opportunities for advanced high schoolage performing artists in music and dance.
